    Hi Bruce!
    Free climbing means climbing up the rock using the natural features rather than using the "aid" of our safety equipment. I did use a rope and safety equipment on the Nose and in general when I go rock climbing because I don't want to get hurt or die in case I fall. When pushing the level of difficulty, we fall often! Thanks to our "safety equipment", I'm still here to talk about it!
    Cheers!

      the changing corner pitch is what defines this route.. Did you prepare before hand? Did you top down to practice or how did you figure it out? The fact that you did the nose means your one of the best climbers in the world. You are amazing but i would like to know how you figured out changing corners.. or the roof for that matter. Such amazing climbing. You are a hero.

    I climbed my first time in 1985 in the Gunks with a female guide named Rosie. She had me top roped on a 5.4 and I was struggling with it. Lynn came strolling by and stopped to talk with Rosie. She saw that someone had left a tricam in a crack near me. So she free climbed up to it, retrieved it, and downclimbed. When I lowered off Rosie introduced me. Lynn was very nice, very encouraging, and rather happy to find a free piece of pro. All I could think was damn what a badass!

      @@LynnHillClimbing I can’t believe you replied! Yes - Rosie Andrews was my guide. That was a pivotal day in my life. I became obsessed with climbing and mountaineering and climbed all over North America during the next 10 or so years. had great adventures and met lots of amazing people along the way. It has been a long while since I last roped up, and I haven’t lived in the NYC area for years. But I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.

    I truly appreciate the difficulty of the Dawn Wall climb that just went up. But I've run into some folks online calling it the "greatest climb of in all rock climbing history." That may yet be proven out. But it's maddening to know that so few know about Lynn's visionary climb of The Nose. They don't know how hard it is, how it took years before another climber managed it. They don't know that Ms. Hill, with this climb, opened Yosemite climbers' eyes to what could be accomplished on El Cap.

    • @DiamorphineDeath
      @DiamorphineDeath Před 9 lety +8

      NickFalacci From my understanding, it blew everyone's mind and made her a superstar, she was one of the only real professional rock climbers at that time along with a few others. But it made the sport progress almost overnight because she was the visionary that did something no one else thought was possible, then everyone else hoped on board and started trying to do the same once the barrier had been broken....the dean potters and the hans florine's for instance making speed and first ascents of super tough aid routes. I really don't think freeing the nose is/was undervalued or unappreciated bud

    I met Lynn at a speaking event in Seattle circa 1997 when she talked about this ground breaking ascent. I was a teenager at the time and she signed a poster! Last week, (almost 20 years later) I took my family to Yosemite to see El Cap for the first time (just from the ground). I think back about this single-day free climb and am still astonished beyond words. Still goes down as one of the most epic achievements in free climbing history. Thanks for posting.

    I'm trying to remember how news of this ascent hit the climbing world. It was like a quiet bomb, if such a thing is possible. The future was revealed. That it was over a decade before the feat was repeated is shocking, and it's not like there were no attempts. 22 years out and only four people have done The Nose free, two of them women.
    There was a memorable ad on the back cover of one of the climbing mags, bought by Boreal, the maker of the shoes she used. There's little 5'3" Lynn casually dangling a pair of climbing shoes and wryly smiling at the camera and saying "It goes boys". It's a taunt, though not mean. I guess if your sexist it might have ticked you off. I thought it perfect. BTW: I'm a male climber who started before Lynn was born.
