My customer returned this rough opal so I cut it for him part 2

    • Video
See the results of this returned rough opal parcel from my customer. The second half of this video shows the result of all the time spent sweating over what to do. The risk in this parcel was high and so was my stress levels.
I hope when you watch this video you feel what I'm going through because it's not easy. When you are cutting other peoples opal you are taking the risk for them and thus why I don't like to cut others opal if they are not with me. And I choose not to cut for others. This was just a special case.

I have to be honest Justin. If I had received this parcel, as a novice Opal cutter, I would have sent it back too! If it was THAT DIFFICULT for you (as a pro) to cut, a novice would have no chance!
Regardless, you have once again cut some absolutely stunning stones! Well done, Sir!

Great to hear you talk about the options but still put the stones first. I also see why you don't often cut other people's opal. You do the right thing by the stone and if it does not work out but the owner may or may not understand. This owner clearly put their trust in your skills and must be over the moon with these results. Top draw as always!

Justin - I've started watching your videos while I have been off work due to the COVID outbreak.
I have really enjoyed watching your video's. I've learnt so much about a subject I knew nothing about and have really gained a great interest in Opel stones & the way they are cut and polished.
I had no idea there were so many types there were and how difficult it can be to "revel" the stone itself. Your commentary on your videos is really interesting and I like the way you pass on your knowledge.
I watched one really interesting video of yours with you explaining the story behind some of the stones in your private collection, you had some amazing gems and loved hearing the story behind the various stones you have.
Keep up the good work mate & keep the videos coming as I really enjoy them and what is strange is I find watching you cutting the stones really relaxing. Even stranger that I live on the other side of the world, 10's of thousands of miles away from any Opel.
Stay Safe & Well and look forward to watching more of your videos :)

Jeez this reminds me of trying to figure out a retired opal cab and free form cutters bench opal. Everything he was working on when he decided to stop cutting opal! The opal nobbies he couldnt bring himself to cut because he doubted himself. And all the rough he couldnt part with when he sold his lapidary equipment. Black semi black crystal and white. More reds yellow pink and orange then blue green purple. All the patterns are extraordinary. Thousands of carats. 95% is gem opal with incredibly bright color. So stones with adhesive from dopping still on the back even! All Australian, purchased between 1980-2000.
You should see the cabs I got from him to.
One 11 carat 12mm dome with flagstone and some chinese writing on the sides. Instead of being backed by potch it's back is a differnt color bar perfectly even with the dome so I almost thought it was a doublet. Its not! The back patern is a more defined flagstone (I believe with the correct re cut it would be harlequin) so a solid 11 carat flagstone chinese writing and harlequin gem with incredible brightness. Not to mention at least 1000 carats of the same rough it was cut from with the same brightness. I dont believe I'm not dreaming or in a coma to be honest! But I guess 1000 carats of boulder from yowah and 5000 carats of high grade rubs and rough will either make a master out of me or teach me it's not for me haha. Can I send you some as a gift for you to cut and show what can come out of it and see if it's as good as it seems?

Your talent is fascinating! Years ago I was supposed to be trained as a lapidary, but the employer cheated me and just used me for general labour. I kept my temper, hoping he would change his mind, but the day I was used to "babysit" his dogs, I threw a fit and quit. Perhaps I was being tested, but after five months you would think I would have passed any "test". I was 27 then, but I am 65 now - far too late for any talent to be absorbed and arthritis has set in my hands. I do detailed solder work for friends on electronics and electronic kits because it is easy on my joints, even for the U.S. Navy now and then. But I really wanted to do what you do as a lifetime trade. Not for the money so much, but for the beauty I could create.

They definitely turned out beautiful. I understand why you don't want to cut Opals. They're made of about 30 to 40% water. I had really good friends on Grateful Dead tour that used to wire wrap. They always hated working on Opals because when you're twisting the wire, you don't know if you're going to hit a section that has a little bit more water in it. Crack f*** I just cracked a $1,500 opal. Great stuff though. I subscribe to your channel. Thanks. Keep on pumping it out. I want to see more. I like the way that you explained What were the parts in opal sand there was an inclusion small natural crack? Lot of people think that opal is tough It's not. Glass blowers have to use synthetic opal in their glass because they could never put a real one in there with a torch. Stay blessed brother. I hope I see more opals.

I could see the second stone showing some good colour as you rubbed it the first time. It came out pretty good in the finish. Well worth waiting for, to see what you ended up with. I'd be happy if they were mine. Good job as usual Justin.

Stick or twist. Both opals are just excellent illustrations of how much work and experience goes into deciding how to cut an opal. Must be scary as hell knowing your customer is going to watch the video and asking you why you made the wrong move! The play of colours on the second stone reminded me of a Dorado or Dolphin fish. Stunning. And yet the colour bars below hinted at other equally glorious colours.

Continued. . . given by the best teachers because they would learn from the them than any class given by an average teacher even teaching if the subject seemed more interesting to them. You are a great teacher! That quality has such a positive affect on the world! Thank you

They turned out beautifully. I would definitely like to see them polished. The prices of them is just crazy. I understand why it was so stressful to cut them. My dad used to have the stuff to cut stones, and I used to just cut random stones, and that was stressful, because I was a kid, and I didn't want them to break. I can't imagine how stressful it would be to cut something of that value. I do wish your videos would have subtitles though. It's not that I don't like listening to you, but I'd rather have it on silent, because then I don't have to hear the commercials, or any music. Other than not having subtitles, it was a good video 👍

I am sure the owner of the stone who sent it back, will be more than happy.
I learned a lot about the play of opals. Thank you. Respect for your craftsmanship.
