- Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
I jumped on CZcams Live last week to cut some rough with 350 of you, as I do sometimes and had no idea what was in store.
There I was, chatting away, grinding rough piece after piece. Content with what I was finding, I decided to cut one more... and then everything changed.
Today, I'll polish this baby up and show you what I'm doing with this unbelievable gem.
Read the full blog post here: blackopaldirect.com/blog/scri...
Watch the live CZcams videos here (I get pretty hyped up)
PART 1: • Finding and cutting op...
PART 2: • I HAD to show you this...
PART 3: • I did NOT expect this....

This looks exactly like the old 3D Pipes Screensaver for Windows. Like to a T. Am I the only one?
It’s even got the distance 3D look in them just like the screen saver did yep I see it
No this type of Opal is called Chinese writing opal
As I'm watching. and as a jewelry designer. I was imaging a beautiful 10 pt white diamond in the hole...to set off the unbelievable color of the opal!😇❤️
you could always drill a fine hole straight through so you could set a diamond or something in the hole, the peg to the gem would then be attached to the backing and also serve as a way of holding the opal down. not all is lost
Priceless gem to be honest. I'm glad you kept it.
Beautiful gemstone! Set a diamond in the hole, turn the imperfection into something beautiful and unique! 💖
I also think diamond will be perfect.
It's an antique style not as common today... Vintage cabochons like onyx with a diamond set in the center. I'm not a jeweler, so I don't know how they do it but it's possible. 😉
Diamonds aren't actually rare though..
@@Jarlaxl.Baenre high quality white ones are, as are fancy colored ones. Opal isn't "rare" either, but nice ones sure are. Almost no mineral is rare if you're disregarding quality. And value wise, disregarding the cost and time it takes to go from underground ore to a gem on your jewelry.
Thats how he can probably make up the difference in loss, add another precious gem as a filler and it might just raise the value of the gem more so then if you are to just leave it how it is, but then again the original later on might turn out to be worth more without the additions, its kinda a gamble on whats going to happen with value of it, but for aesthetics it would be beautiful to see
I’m sure you wish the sand wasn’t in the center but the pattern might have never developed without the imperfection. Glass half full.
SHERMA yeah crystalline atomic structure is a funny thing!
You're so right! Definitely not sad about finding this gem :)
No the sand has nothing to do with the colour pattern of an opal
@@aussieguy3689 you don't know that, and we only have theories on how opal is made. How you can you know something for sure when actually geologists do not? Do you have the secrete on how to make opal????
@@Necronaut well actually i do know how opal is formed and so do scientists and geologists , its formed by a mixture of minerals , pressure and extreme heat sand has nothing to do with the formation of opal you clearly have no idea about gem stones do you .
Looks like looking at the sky with aurora borealis with lightning and a full moon, it's incredible
That gem is way too beautiful to be just a few thousands, I love the pattern and how it disappears and reappears when looking at it from different angles
its unique patterning defies the standard judgement critieria.
I have to tell you, when that initially flashed on the screen, I *actually* GASPED! Stunning!
I almost fainted!!
@@blackopaldirectBut at the end the ring is on your hand and you are doing the million dollars dance again😂.
Maybe a spidery natural gold nugget can go in the sand hole. It’s filaments could link up with the script pattern
thats a great idea, much prefer that to a diamond myself

Or a blue sapphire
Most beautiful opal I’ve ever seen, bar none.
Wow! It reminds me of runestone! (I'm scandinavian). It's astounding!
No matter the sand spot..that is a beauty..I would carve out that middle and put a fabulous bright green gemstone into it. Hey, you get lemons you make lemonade, right?
When the world hands you lemons, squeeze the juice in people's eyes.
Ancient proverb.
And t-shirt.
That is exactly what I was going to say. There are some amazing bright green tourmaline from Maine in the U.S. that would go great, but it is very rare and I don't know if the mine owner is selling any.
How about some beautiful Russian Chrome Diopside? I know the mine's closed now, but there are still some beautiful pieces floating around to be had. And it's such a delightful shade of green, really.
Good idea
I mentioned that at the live as well. It could be a cool solution, all unique and beautiful! I also would keep it odd-shaped to keep the most of it.
Justin, I knapped my first opal arrowhead a couple days ago.
I told Mr pultzer about it, I'm gonna tell you about it.
The stone did not speak to me until the third flake removal. It then revealed more blue color play right across the middle. It's Australian.
It is a crystal with blue color play. It has blue and black potch. Lighter color tone.
Started the size of a u.s. quarter and finished right at the size of my thumbnail.
It's a mark of my skill as a flintnapper as I waited over a year with it for it's day.
Turned out amazing! And now I get to carry it with the other orange jasper arrowhead on my necklace.
Sounds cool I'd love to see it
Here's a thought. Inlay a piece of monocrystaline silicon of the type used to make integrated circuits. You can buy polished wafers or even chunks of it fairly inexpensively. It polishes to a dark mirror finish. It also kind of fits because opal is ultimately made of silicon.
The hole makes it a HAG Stone! Even more value and magick in my eyes! This witchy-tech nerd is SO IN LOVE with your Circuit Script Hag Stone! I would leave it as is and make a wire wrapped pendant, so it could be suspended and spin for all to adore its magnificent splendor!
It's Windows 3.1 screensaver pattern..
Yes!! Haha
When I saw the thumb nail, I thought it was that too, only a joke photo shopped image. I don't know much about opals, and just came across the channel today.
sandspot be damned.. still the coolest opal i have ever seen
I love this man! He's the hero of the opals
I love opals, they are my favorite stone, especially black opals. And I love this very rare beauty. Congrats on your unique and very special find. Will make a remarkable ring. Cant wait to see the finished product. Cheers! ~ Whimsy Meadows
"quite nice?" mate that is unique. Beauty is never perfect, it's all about the flaws!
Perfect imperfections
Its pattern similar like rainbow lattice sunstone, and its same from australia
It would look stunning with a gorgeous diamond set into where the sandspot is!
the face of this stone is what my happy place looks like.
Smart choice. Do not loose any of the pattern. Save as much as you can. Actually, a museum would want it for a specimen piece.
I am glad to see you have worked on that stone. Sand hole or not, it is one of my favorites that you have worked on. Now, as a budding jeweler, I want to see how it is set.
I will definitely share it when it's done!!
Oh I can’t wait !
I LOVE that you're going to keep it. It's the perfect reminder of the wonder and sometimes frustration of the gems you love. Such rare beauty can be maddening.
Rare.......wow!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Unbelievable! Wow!!! Can't wait to see it finished!
This is great. It’s just like the one you and your dad came across. This is yours for your generation Justin. Your family will remember it fondly just as you do the other. Good job brother.
I would have a cut green stone set flush in a gold tube setting within that whole. If you go with a deeper green, it won't take away from the opals beauty but it would also give it an elegant computer/alien feel to it.
Why I was freaking out when you drilled out the sand I don’t know but great find , that’s a keeper.
Script pattern sounds nice but if it would previously have been called German writing, because I'm German heritage, I would absolutely love to continue to call it German writing because I don't find anything politically incorrect with using the name of the country that is my heritage.
Actually I find it a compliment and I don't understand why people would think its an insult or politically incorrect. To me it makes absolutely zero sense.
The gem is very very beautiful and I enjoy watching what you do but also how you explain things.
“Etch a Sketch” pattern.
yes!
Jeez.... I was nervous just watching you on the polishing stone never mind the grinding stone. Looking forward to seeing the final ring and thank you for sharing your surprises with us.
Thanks for watching 👍
Looks like opal pretending to be bismuth...
Something like "ugh.. nothing to see here, just another bismuth :)"
I was thinking the exact same thing ^.^
YEP! Looks exactly like a hopper face crystal
Love watching you, amazing opal you found. There is definitely a message on that opal.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this opal😱😱
You and me both!
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE RING ALL DONE!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!
You,ve got me hooked, I can't stop watching! And every time, I think these extraordinary pieces are the nicest I've seen, until the next one. This one was truly magnificent! Thanks for sharing 😊
I Love reliving the moment you discovered the pattern, such a crazy experience and is endless with opal !! Loved seeing the stone before it was cut
I'm so glad you are going to keep it whole and make a ring out of it! It will be gorgeous!
I can’t wait until we see the finished project. It’s going to be spectacular. A pleasure watching as always. Good job👍🏻
😍 It's perfect because it's not perfect. So beautiful.
Wow! DNA pattern very unique very beautiful loved it you kept it😍😍😍
The DEPTH of that pattern even with such a thin color bar!
*mind blown*
@@blackopaldirect Right! beautiful stone.. second pretties I have seen yet on your channel
I was there during live. This was by far the most stressful live I've seen. That's a stunning stone as it is!
That is ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL
Oh my my my! That stone is a heart breaker! Magnificent! Use the hole to place something into to compliment it...diamond maybe? Aussie gold? I like the name change. Appropriate. I cannot wait to see the next chapter! Brilliant show! Your excitement was palpable! Well done!
I'm so glad you've decided to keep it whole. I also like 'script'-pattern better. I'll forever remember this stone. The hole does not diminish its perfection.
That is the best pattern I've ever seen!
Just watched again bloody incredible...
Unbelievable !!!
This is UNBELIEVABLE !!!
That's going to be one of the most unique rings ever made Justin. I can't wait to see what the jeweller decides to adorn that background with. So happy to see you hang on to this for your personal collection. 👍
Amazing, I'd love to see the ring final results!!! Please update us!
like others have said, a drop of gold or a diamond set in that hole would look amazing. not sure if it would be possible to set something like that inside on opal tho. Brilliant piece!
I never knew stones could do this! You've given me a great idea for a magical item to add to my DnD campaign!
I thought I was cool with my fiery ribbon pattern. This is nothing short of stunning!
There's a CZcams channel called Tim's adventures. He's a sapphire miner in Australia. He's got what you need to fill that hole.
Like a parti saph with complimentary colours?! Thatd b Awsome!
I was thinking the same thing.
I was about to say the same thing in regards to putting a sapphire in the hole. Keeps it wholly Australian .
I've got a beautiful blue star sapphire that would look amazing.
The stone is absolutely stellar. The logical inference in calling it Chinese writing is nothing but a compliment.
That's what normal people would think.
I don't think it's as beautiful as a black opal. Especially that beautiful one you have
That script pattern is insane! A worthy personal stone!
you should make it into a necklace, use the sand hole as the chain hole!, that way you can wear it around
I actually watched this again. Love it
You just answered my question with the dremel. Not knowing much about stones nor polishing, I find opals fascinating. Nice skills. Good day.
I bet this brings your disgust of sand spots to a whole new level. That is one of the sweetest opals I ever seen.
The bane of my existence haha
Wouldn't it be nice with a gem stone in the sand hole. Emerald, ruby, sapphire.
I know what would be beautiful in the hole... either an alexandrite or the cats eye alexandrite with great color change! That would be so unique and beyond beautiful. It’ll be beautiful no matter what I’m sure! Can’t wait to see what she comes up with !❤️
A beauty! Perfect piece for a Black Hills Gold silver ring I'm planning on getting!
With that color and brighntess, it looks like a wicked lightning strike.
Center hole just crying out for a diamond...just beautiful:-)
Wow this is an incredible find!! It’s beautiful 😍
Just new to your exciting and ever so interesting activity Justin. What I reall enjoy most is your upbeat and positive attitude.
Thank you Shaun
Beautiful Opal pattern!
Ruth, just a random idea, would be cool to add a Sapphire to where the hole is when you design the men's ring. :D It'll look amazing without taking away from the Opal. ❤️
You're right , it should add value without distracting from the pattern too much, so a dark blue stone would me perfect
I’ve been wondering about this piece. I really can’t wait to see the finished ring. Do you have a update coming for us soon?
I like it as a pendant, with a really nice diamond.
Would like too see an update too! 😻
Just looked at it again - how about a really nice emerald?
OMG ! I absolutely enjoyed this one.
That is one very special Gem. I’ve never seen anything like it, ever. You absolutely deserve to wear that piece, who better ? I can think of none more deserving. 100% impressive and very happy for you for sure 😊
Amazing work and journey you are on!! Nothing like honest work with the hands...
too underrated. Thanks for sharing your sparkling wisdom and sense of humor. Your efforts make me wish I could afford the necessary tools. I make jewelry so the work you are passionate about is related to some extent.
A talented wire wrapper could make a gorgeous multi-stone pendant out of this
It is very good and I am so glad that this wonderful stone has found its way into your master hands👍
Thank you so much for let us all participate the editing process and for presenting this magnificent specimen👏
How about to set a square cut gem in the hole? It would be fits perfectly with this incredible pattern👌
What a beautiful stone! Needs another gem, or gold (?!!) In that hole...
Coming from a man who has only cursed once on camera, and over THIS very stone, no one could be offended. A truly remarkable stone. Beautiful
it could be "circuit pattern"
Digital Pattern
You're so right. That's the perfect description of this pattern. I vote we 'modernise' it and call it 'circuit pattern' from now on.
I thought it looked kind of like hieroglyphics
Matrix pattern
My 6 yo daughter also said it looked like his dad phone case (circuit design). Such a stunning pattern!😍
So cool! She's spot on. The ring design will be focused around this circuit board idea :) can't wait to show you guys!
@@blackopaldirect she prefer videos about the " rainbow little stones" instead fairytales🤣🤣🤣 and that one blowed her mind, she asked: mom can we buy it? Pleaaaaaase?!?
What a. Beautifully unique piece 😉
I built a opal mine in your area (200 million years ago, wood came from the UK), I put some really cool designs on lots, keep looking your will find one with a few faces, one being Jesus. Good luck on your hunting. P.S. Bringing land value to a land.
Justin, a question for you! If you where to fill the hole with cystral clear resin or supa glue do you think it might reflect the pattern? A piece of gold foil in the base first might work?
My idea: an facet stone the same colar in the sand spot. ...maybe a blue safira. ....level to the Opal. Anything that will not take the attention from the Opal!
And you got a Gift. Enjoy!
😙
Watching that beauty come to life was a heart racer. It still is. Stunning.
I'd love to see that with a white topaz set in temporarily to see how and if it reflects some of the colour. I think done right, it could look spectacular.
Drill out the sand spot and tube set a chrome dioxide (beautiful green stone).
Love Bubble Don’t you mean Chrome Diopside.
@@sanookaus1334 Yes I do!! Thanks!
Chinese cash coin has a hole in the middle.... ( google it and I didnt mention chinese, did I?) :o)
As an Englishman I'm traumatised at the cultural appropiation of my language, Queen, and political system and that's just for starters!........ It's not PC! And I'm offended.
@@sliperysid Very sorry.... Not.
@@sliperysid can’t tell if sarcasm or not.
So glad you caught it live. Nice one
What a beautiful and unique stone! It's stunning. I can't wait to see the ring when it's finished.
I would like to see what it would look like with a Peridot in the hole
I’d just cut into an oval and set it with a diamond, enough said,Beauty inside beauty 😁👍
It flashes like lightning. Very beautiful
A gorgeous piece of opal.
Pattern name should be "cuneiform"; have a look at some samples, its very apt.
OmegaPrime yeah. not seeing it. definitely looks more like chinese
I have the deepest respect for you and your skills, but this PC thing is so far out of control. There is absolutely nothing disrespectful about Chinese Writing, it has the same artful strokes as calligraphy and it is beautiful, just like this stone.
You can call it whatever you like. We decided to change it and love the name Script Pattern. Hope you understand :-)
Fully agree, to much poco loco these days
I agree, it makes me sad to see everything renamed just because the name is offensive in SOME people's OPINION. With that going around, expect almost everything to be renamed because somebody somewhere will find something offensive about just about anything.
100% agree. Something offensive can be manufactured from every word or phrase. Unfortunately the people with the most amount of time to get offended by something like “Chinese writing” usually have the amount of money to be buying expensive opals. So we cater to the money, because money is everything. Love the gem, loved seeing it develop but really left a bad taste in my mouth with all the pc bs. Too bad
@@blackopaldirect Script pattern is brilliant as the gem. "Script' is friendly toward Arcane and archtypally ancient across all Ages, a as well friendly to our modern and our future. This stone 'communicates'..something..
I think you should cut a small round piece of Fire Opal and add that to the center it would make the whole gem pop so much more. Could even inset a thin foil of Silver or Gold to catch the light underneath it and send it right back out to your eye.
I'm no gem expert or jewelry expert in any way but I can just picture that in my mind as being so unique that nobody ever has or will in the future. ONE of a KIND! BEAUTIFUL!
❤😮❤😮❤ congratulations 👏👏👏
