Why you should use a two bounce serve

- In this video you will learn how to do a two bounce serve.
This is a serve which bounces in the middle of the table and the next bounce is very close to the end of the table. The length of this serve can be difficult to deal with. It’s not easy to attack and often an opponent will play a passive return which you can attack.
The tips in this video come from Lois Peake. Lois has represented England and the junior and senior level and is also a very good coach.
This video was made in partnership with Table Tennis England www.tabletennisengland.co.uk/

It's important to also remember that the serve has to be low. If it's a bit too high, even if it would bounce twice on the table, it can be attacked with a top-spin shot.
Without realising it I've been doing these with disguised top spin and the frequently tentative returns often come back long. They are probably my best serves nowadays.
I'm 63. i played tuornaments till age 40, and then I haven't touched my racket ever since. Now I'm going to buy a detached dublex house, and will spare one big room for table tennis., with robot and all. My second life is about to begin! Thanks for your eforts and the inspiration you pass on, Tom.
Wow, that's proper commitment. Love it. Hope you can pick up where you left off over twenty years ago. Enjoy the journey!
Thank you for the left-handed serving tips from Lois! It’s hard to find tutorials that cater to us lefties! ❤😊
Very informative, thanks Lois 😊
I'm back to working on 2-bounce serves (just to get consistent at doing them). I have practiced doing pendulum serves but I'm rusty (again) using that serve - so back to that also. Great video.
The big problem with 2 bouncer serves is performing it at 9-10 down in the 5th game. Also well done to Miss Peake in having a perfectly, clearly legal serve every time 😊.
It gets really nasty if you can mix it up with underspin ones that look the same but instead come pack after the second bounce. They can look very similar. but need quite different receives. They look like you can receive them with top spin, but the table gets in the way.
Great video overall. But naturally variety is king, because just one good serve is something your opponent can adapt to and turn it around even if it gives you some early easy points.
Great serves and explanation Lois!;))
fantastic explanation
Good video. I am using your videos to learn a lot about table tennis! Been training for a year now as an adult learner.
Great useful explanation; thank you!
Great stuff! Cloud your opponents brain. Sounds like a war strategy! Sounds effective!
Great tutorial. Thank you
Very interesting and helpful !
Bleepin' good stuff!
Thank you, very interesting!
Excellent video Tom
Great, thanks! I'm going to practice this tomorrow ;)
Great content!
Thank you
As a french, I try to understand what you are saying, even if you are employing tennis table technical terms. Because I play tennis table too, in the championnship of my city and other cities around. I graduated the TOEFL, in 84, that s why I am able to understand you. And that enables me to make progress in english with sport words...thanks
a very good thing to practise!
Thanks excelent video 🤩🏓 good Server
Good nice Mr tom👍👍👍
Nice 👍
Lo intentaré el martes
Thanks M.r
Какая умничка 👍
Super
Great Stuff!
Will there be an uncensored version? I wonder what you said at the BEEP. 😀
It was the F word. Twice. Good players like Lois make me swear a lot.
Somehow i'm getting impression that the way lois explains the double bounce serve was like she's explaining the most evil tactic possible in table tennis 😂
I love that reverse serve, ala Timo Boll's serve.
You little monster! In a good loving way of course 😂
One could also argue that a long two-bounce serve, even if recognized as such by the receiver, is harder to push back short, and therefore increases your chances of getting an attackable third ball without the risks associated to a long serve.
Hi Tom. What would generally be the best way to defend/weaponise against (expected) half long serves? Thanks in advance!
Topspin the ball when it's around its peak
@@regular_loser_5699 If the serve is good, that's not possible a lot of the time, and you still have the indecision, as you need to quickly choose between a flick or a push.
@sharpvidtube I didn't say it's easy 😂 But if the serve is half-long, then in principle you have room to swing, so topspin shot would be the best.
@@regular_loser_5699 Yes, most of mine smash into the net😂 I can do this sometimes, and will be practicing it more czcams.com/video/58cqfNnCWUw/video.html
I guess the best option would be to flick, as you don't have to worry about the length of the serve so much. You just make contact at the peak of the bounce.
Is my high speed serve legal? I can toss the ball up and put a lot of top spin and almost hit the ball as hard as I want.
A fellow Lefty for me to Mimic! Thanks
this serve is always with side-backpin, or it can be changed with topspin without variation of the place of the ball?
You could do this a side-backspin or side-topspin. The side-topspin variations are a little harder to keep as a two bounce, but with lots of practice it is possible.
Is there any regulation on the serve having to be done with the ball being struck from behind the end line?
Is it legal to serve right up at the net if there are no restrictions on that?
I believe the regulation states that the serve shall be executed behind endline
@@ttennisdr that's what I thought- don't know if it's enforced normally, similar to the vertical toss angle ambiguity.
@@sadfur8728 It's a clear rule stated. You also have to throw a ball a minimum height from where it leaves your hand, always visible, never obstructed and so on. Don't worry, game rules got everything covered
Me encanta el ping pong
Wow a legal serve so rare in table tennis.
I thought the ball only had to bounce once on the other side of the table anyway? How can a second bounce be long, you can't even have a second bounce. Am I wrong somehow?
They mean that you serve as if you want the ball to bounce twice on the other side before reaching the end of the table. It's an expression to point out how short the ball should first bounce on the other side.
Hello 🖐
Please add Persian subtitles to your videos, many Iranians watch your educational videos🙏
sorry i dont get by first bounces in the middle of the table and the next bounce is very close to the end of the table. both looks the same to me
how old are you?
Hey tom i am 15 years old and im a bit better then a intermediate plyer and i just watched the ''7 benefits of using a table tennis robot'' and i really want something like that but i don't have the place for a table tennis table in my home and i really want to improve my skills and i don't know what to do.
Do you go to a table tennis club? This is a much better option than a robot. Make sure you practice regularly and get some coaching if you can.
All serves must be two bounces? If it's a specific name for middle->far, then the name should be changed.

Unpopular opinion: nowadays it's more eficient to serve long because everyone is used to short serves
Not unpopular and you have a point. I have started to see more players using long serves. But of course if everyone starts using long serves, then we will all get used to that too. Ideally you should have good short serves and good long serves. Then you have more variety and more tactical options when you play.
Long serve in the back hand is quite efficient, at almost every level!
I think the rule is serve long more if an opponent doesn't attack or return well but if they have an effective return to a long serve you need 2 bounce half long serve.
@@TomLodziak is there different servers.
As for disability and I have tried the cup
This woman is impressive, as I have rarely watched top women play TT. My question would be can women in TT be as good as the top men players?
I ask because TT does not seem to need greater physical strength to be a great player, thus if that advantage that men have is negated, women should be able to compete.
Good question. At the amateur level, power is not that important, so women and men can compete together. It is possible to win many points with spin, speed, placement, consistency and good tactics. But at the professional level, power becomes much more important. The players have to hit the ball much harder to get it past an opponent. So at the very highest level men have an advantage over women.
@@TomLodziak Obviously in very physical sports the top women have no chance against the men, not even close. I just didn't realize that was the same or similar in TT.
They say Serena Williams (when she was at her peak) could not beat the ranked 1000 male on the pro circuit. Is the chasm that wide in TT?
@@MultiEviscerator Yes, professional table tennis is very physical. There is a lot of dynamic power. I shouldn't think the top female player would win against any male ranked in the top 200 in the world. But I don't know for sure. It would be interesting to see.
Men also have faster reaction times than women, which is a big advantage in TT.
You gonna get backhand flick after first bounce.
please add Turkish subtitles to your videos
But strong flick can counter this one
Of course. A strong flick can return any short serve. That's why it is useful to have a variety of serves to keep the receiver guessing. And the two bounce serve is a good one to add to your collection of service options.
Commonly known as half long
Tom you are standing at the wrong spot when receiving...
Where do you think I should be standing?
a.k.a. half long serve
Sorry, your reverse pendulum serve is illegal.
Well, when doing such a statement you should also explain why in your opinion this is an illegal serve. At least I don't see any violations of the rules (related to the current ITTF handbook section 2.6) so I would be curious why you think it is illegal.
@@preachie77 The ball passes behind your forehead before hitting the racket. As you are left-handed, the viewing angle leaves doubts to the referee, who does not issue a warning. I have a left-handed friend who does something similar, the opponent complains, but the referee, when in doubt, does not warn.
thats 3 bounces
Isnt that a faul ?
Nice, but the girl spokes too fast. I am a German...
every serve must be two-bounce....
Isn't every serve a two bounce serve?
