- In this video, I look at the differences between Shakehand Serves and Penhold Serves. Are there any differences? What are they? Or are the teaching points the same?
You’ll see the following comparisons:
- Pendulum Serve
- Reverse Pendulum Serve
- Hook Serve

Yes more Penhold videos! Deceptive serves and blocking 👍.
Thank you for the explanation. I would like more on reverse penhold playing and serving.
Exactly what us American penholders need! Thank you cb!!!!!
👌
I find that corkscrew serves are much easier to do as a penholder. I am a penholder, and you can use more wrist while serving if you curl your 3 fingers on the back, stacking them on top of each other with the middle finger only touching the paddle, like the old school way we used to block and push.
More penhold serves please!! Thanks!!!
That is such a good explanation....thanks I will try to make my serves better next week. With all the new grips possible in the last decades it is not that easy to adopt the new techniques. Even Xi Entiing could not show us that when he was our coach....lol
Great content and stoked for the penhold love ❤
Very good!
Thank you for this video. If it is possible, please make more videos about penhold tips and lessons.
I’ll try
Your instructions are very detailed and helpful. It would be great if you would also indicate details of the bat you use for the videos. May also help the sponsor as well😊
I’ll add it to the descriptions 👍
Very, very nice 👌
Hey, Craig
The main and very old question - how to get away from to much pushing to brushing? Spinning instead of hitting
Try to ensure your effort is away from from you
It was 2004 Athens Olympics when I watched Ryu seung min defeat Waldner, since then I've played as penholder. Sometimes, just sometimes I wish Waldner had won😅
Waldner beat him the very next month in the China Open too 😞
Good.
Sir, enjoying the content greatly. Notice that you don't talk much about your feet or movement after contact. Any reason?
Good observation. Just an oversight from me, feet can have an impact, I’ll bear that in mind for future. The movement after I tend not to focus on (although I’ve done a whole video on recovery) as it can easily detract from the skill you’re trying to develop.
IMHO the hook serve seems too easy to receive. I use the Ovcharov tomahawk in the penholder version(forehand side). You can easily vary this serve from strong underspin through sidespin to topspin. But I achieve the strongest side rotation with a backhand side tomahawk. Or, to put it another way, this is a reflected reverse pendulum, the movement is more natural and, thanks to this, with greater acceleration
I wasn’t demonstrating these to necessarily show their ‘danger’ but the similarities in the techniques
