Good to see pen holders still around. I must say we are a dying breed. Most young players and beginners do not want to learn this grip. As long as your reverse pen hold backhand is decent, you can still excel.

yeah, I learned on k-pen, so that's what I'm sticking with. maybe I'll learn c-pen if it becomes a necessity, or maybe add rubber to the back of my jpen racket, who knows? 🤷

@@bryanwells4063 I always wondered about that, can you use a K-pen/J-pen one sided blade and glue another rubber on the plain wooden side? Is that permissable in a tourney or any official match? I'm thinking of teaching my Dad and my younger sibling modern C-pen backhand but they're accustomed to the feel of the J-pen blade as is.

@@floatingdisembodiedhead8975 I don't see any reason for it not to be legal, I've never tried it but one of my rackets, called the nittaku miyabi round, has plain wood on the back instead of black paint, as if it was meant to have rubber on the back. I didn't know that when I bought it so I just ordered rubber for the front, but it is an option later down the rode. I think the only rule for table tennis rackets is that they need to have ittf approved rubber and they need to have a black side and a red side. That's why black paint is required on the back of jpen rackets

This playstyle reminds me He Zhi Wen's , really short and fast attacks

He seems to be more versatile than He Zhi Wen. He plays with both normal penhold backhand as well as reverse penhold backhand. When smashing a high lob defensive return, he switches to handshake grip. I suspect the front and back of his bat have different surfaces.
