  • I teach one of my very favorite serves in this week's video! The short backspin pendulum serve done with pure backspin. There are several unique techniques to this serve that if done correctly can give you a tremendous amount of backspin. I mix this serve about evenly with the side backspin serve because there is a natural variation to the spin which is very difficult to for the opponent to pick up on.

So good. Can’t wait to try to improve my pure backspin serve. I really like the detailed explanation of the straight line especially on the down the line serve. I have noticed that I tend to get a little bit of side spin when attempting this serve down the line. Now I know I probably just have to adjust my backswing (point A). Thanks!

The concept of going from Point A > Point B > Point C has been really helpful in my game to ensure straighter and more pure backspin. You'll be surprised at how much better backspin you'll get on your serves with it!

Hey Joey.Nice video .Thx.This made me think of the serve Fan Zhendong most often uses.I'm not sure but I think he varies between underspin and no spin. His serve also seems to have very little side spin.It would be nice to see an analysis of that particular serve if possible. Thanks again.

Yes. You are exactly right. The Chinese are famous for mixing between heavy backspin and no spin serves. They often times don't put any sidespin on the ball.

Nice video! Good information, I would like to see you analyse your own plays some time :)

I should. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of video of me playing. Maybe once the covid restrictions die down i'll get to play more tournaments and i can record and analyze for the channel

Could you possibly explain corkscrew spin? I've met many players who categorize it differently than side spin, but I'm not sure how to serve or return it, or if I've ever actually seen a corkscrew serve.

A special type of sidespin. This is a concentrated sidespin capable of making the ball trounce and kick sideways in a quick and far motion. This is usually done in snakes to disorient the rhythm of the opponent and possibly force him/her to commit offensive error.

it's like a snake where the ball goes sideways..

Hi Bryce! The corkscrew spin is a tough one. I just added it to my list to make a video for it. Most sidespins have a combination of sidespin with topspin or sidespin with backspin but a true corkscrew ball spins perfectly on its side while moving forward without the backspin or topspin. The way this is achieved is by hitting the south pole of the ball and pulling hard to the side. The best example of I can think of for corkscrew serves are done by Vladimir Samsonov.

If you are taking the racket straight back, doesn't that cause problems because you have telegraphed exactly where you are hitting the ball well before you hit it? How often do you use this shot in a game?
