There wasn't a single tear during this whole film until his mom was just standing there at front of the door with his cup of tea...I completely lost it.

It's obvious that Kenneth Williams suffered from depression for the majority of his adult life. Despite his talents as a comedic performer, the actor struggled with issues of self worth, identity, and constantly feeling set apart from others.
The repression of his sexuality is a key point to who he was in his personal life. Williams knew he was gay, never in denial about it but rarely acted upon it and came to view it with a sense of deep loathing. His increasing health problems compounded his fragile mental state.
In the end, he would never achieve a sense of contentment and happiness. These would forever elude him. One can only hope that death has provided him comfort in a way life never did.

Thank you for uploading this. I watched them all. A very moving film. Michael Sheen has him down to a fine art. His voice and mannerisms are spot on. RIP KW.

The coroner asked "Could the pills have been taken accidentally?"
"The doctor replied "It is possible, but not likely."
That last bit just breaks my heart. Rest in peace, Kenneth.

That was brilliant, and so richly deserved by Kenneth Williams. One can only deal with the material one is given. Hence, autre temps autre moeurs for Williams. Look at the comedy of his contemporaries. Much of it seems dated and somewhat corny these days. Similarly the "material" his life provided for the genius who is Michael Sheen, to submit such a bravura performance (in virtually every scene). was fantastic. I've seen Williams on Parky and he is WONDERFUL! What a remarkably strong and courageous man to suffer THAT life without huge drug and alcohol addiction. One can still have reasonable self esteem, but still be dreadfully depressed. Vale Kenneth, Great stuff Michael

    Fantabulosa is a superb drama
For those interested I thought I would mention the fact the film score has been changed on the DVD release
This in my opinion is a great shame because the original as per this version captures Kenneths despair perfectly
Thanks for posting Fantabulosa on CZcams

As most great comedians, Mr. Williams was able to make others laugh all the while his own personal life was a misery and essentially tragic. I think Harold Lloyd was the only comedian out of ALL of them who led a relatively happy and productive life/career: although early on he lost part of his right hand in an explosion accident on the set of one of his very early silent comedies. Thanks for posting this.

your absolutly right we tend to forget that depression is a disease not a state of mind deep depression is not some type of dip that you can easaly wisk away by saying that the sun will come out tomorrow its a dark mood that simply takes over everything
now we all have depressive moments but those are just dips not deep depression

This film seems to focus on his later life mainly and his illness.
    Its pretty grim.
But im certain he enjoyed a lot of his life.

from what i have ;earned about him, he probably would have found the whole thing rather intrusive. For someone so frightened pf intimacy Ive heard people say who knew him think that the idea of an operation pushed him over the edge. its awful! I wish he'd ended more happy than he was!

claire smith you understand that mental illness and depression was not well understood back then right? It’s also not known if he killed himself or accidentally overdosed which, considering the circumstances, is more likely. Another factor in this is that even if it was suicide, most people with depression or other mental illness are scared to get help. He was scared of intimacy so why wouldn’t he be scared to talk to someone about the intimate details of what goes on in his head. You need to be more open minded about this. Sorry for the rant but I have strong feelings on this topic

I have to admit, Claire, I agree with you. He seemed a very stupid bloke. All that rubbish he said about how he longed to be dead. It's not much fun when you think you shortly will be, I can tell you!
