- While the Porsche 991.2 Carrera S is quite good, no car is perfect. Here are 5 ways this 911 will annoy you if you decide to own one.
I've owned this Porsche 991.2 Carrera S with a manual transmission long enough to see just why so many Porsche enthusiasts say this is a phenomenal generation of 911 to own. With that said, my ownership experience has also revealed some of the weak points of the car.
In this video, I'll discuss:
- Why, in spite of the joy of having a manual in a 991.2 S, it can be a bit irritating at times.
- The way that owning the Porsche 991.2 Carrera S can actually hit you in the wallet quite hard.
- The key to choosing a spec that really enhances your ownership enjoyment.
- The one downside of the rather light clutch feel on the Porsche 991.2 Carrera S.

1:59 Reason #2 the 991.2 Carrera S might annoy you - just how boring driving it in base (non-Sport) mode
2:52 Reason #3 the 991.2 Carrera S might annoy you - difficult to stop driving it đ
3:47 Reason #4 the 991.2 Carrera S might annoy you - can't find a manual example
5:03 Reason #5 the 991.2 Carrera S might annoy you - my example just wasn't that special

âThe reason Iâm annoyed, is I like driving it so much that Iâm putting miles on it ⊠and thatâs why Iâm selling it â đđđ
I know it may not make sense but itâs 100% true for me based on the goals I had for this one.
I drove it, figured out what I liked and didnât like, then was able to break even on it.
Had I kept adding miles I would have lost money that I wanted to put into the next carâŠ
Last week I ordered a 992 Carrera T and specâd it exactly as I wanted to based on what I learned from this S.
So, there is a method to the madness and is just how I like to enjoy the hobby. Strange? Perhaps but it works for me and I have fun sampling the cars as I proceed through the journey.
@@Rennthusiast hey I get it. Youâre a collector and enthusiast. Totally get it. I own 4 cars, but I tend to get an attachment/sentiment toward them if I really like them, to the point I just canât let myself let them go. I also havenât quite figured out how to sell them for a profit or break even , considering I love driving them so much and I do with every chance I get. I donât buy them for monetary purposes; but the enjoyment they give me. Iâve always told myself âwell, guess I need to make more moneyâ when there is another model I am lusting for đ.
One of my biggest annoyances with the 991 and this generation of Porsche interior design is the number of blank buttons on the center console you get even with a high option spec. Donât think that Iâve ever seen them all filled in even on press cars.
When your rich car has poverty buttons
I donât mind my black 991.2. Although, just like you said itâs such a pain to keep it clean. I daily my Carrera T too, so every week itâs getting a wash. My next 911 will definitely NOT be black.
I think you should try the 996âŠ.ideally a GT2 âŠbut those are pricey and hard to come by. But it seems to me that that car may be the sweet spot in terms of performance, size and true analog clutch. The fried eggs also seem to be getting some love these days. Cheers.
as a 991.2 owner i found this video annoying.
I had a black on black 991.2 targa 4S and what you described is very accurate. Still fantastic cars, but I felt the same about mine (other than it had pdk). Sold it and miss it, but you remind me why I sold it. I have found no car is perfect so I have a few that are fun in different ways to scratch the itches-manual/pdk, air cooled and small/water cooled and largeâŠ..great summary of 991.2.
I think it's a great car especially if you plan on driving it daily. I can understand what you mean about a soft clutch feel. Can that be adjusted?
Traded in 16 991.1 7MT for 20 992 S PDK. It is just lightyears faster and such a better, more modern dash and tech.
czcams.com/video/WT0WRK5odp4/video.htmlsi=ZdCRPjvaFBifPeEp
I will say the 991.1 sounds better at all times vs the 991.2 which has to be in sport or sport plus to sound decent. Just putting around doing daily things in normal mode, my 991.1 still sounds amazing
Ive got a Toyota GR Yaris thatâs been tuned & modded in the uk when i wanna row the gearsâŠwhen i wanna relaxing drive i go in the 911 PDK đâŠthey are both brilliant though
I suspect that sport mode is off by default for emissions and/or fuel mileage rating reasons. I agree it sucks, but reality of world we are living in. Maybe a tune could turn on automatically?
How did you get along with the 7-speed over a 6-speed?
Initially I thought 7th gear was useless and silly but then I found myself using it on the freeway. Got good fuel mileage too.
There is an easy solution Will, don't buy a trailer queen, buy one that you can take out and beat on, maybe put a scratch or two on it. That's a nice ride you have.
I'm on the hunt for a new daily driver, what car (Porsche) would you suggest?
997
Probably the worst thing to ever happen to the color selection of any car has been reporting of the most popular colors. White, black, silver, and gray (BORING!). While those colors are fine (if you like them), the manufacturers and dealers pander to that limited selection thus making availability of more interesting colors all that more limited. Kind of like manual vs PDK. I will always prefer a nice Guards Red 911 with a manual over some bland (insert one of the above colors here) with an automatic any day of the week.
I donât quite agree with all of what you mentioned on the dislikes, but I do agree on how it can get under your skin without fully realising it. I sold mine which had PDK and regretted selling her after 2.5 yrs and 13k miles... Somehow, and this might sound ridiculous.. I liked it more than the manual 718 Spyder I had which followed it a few years later. I missed the 911âs rear weight bias and handling characteristics which somehow made it feel more special than the Boxster product. I also had the standard exhaust purely from a Looks perspective, but it was still surprisingly tuneful (which Nik Murray did allude to this in a video clip when he compared a standard exhaust with the sports upgrade exhaust. ). Given what the more exciting GT models offer, in retrospect, the regular S version fulfilled its brief perfectly.
Agree with your question "why isn't it always in Sport mode?" my '81 SC is always in Sport Plus Plus mode
Because they need to start in normal mode to meet government MPG and emission regulations.
What was it that made you drive this so much when you owned it? Doesnât seem like you liked it the best. Was it the most daily drivable? Was it the desire to preserve value on the other cars? Some other reason?
It was so easy and comfortable to just jump into and roll, especially on road trips. I knew I would not keep it too long so I wanted to preserve the value. This was, in my mind, more like a âI want to rent this car to see what itâs like,â which I did.
Now I know what I want - and donât want - in a modern 911 âkeeper,â so I have ordered a 992 Carrera T and specâd it exactly the way I want it from a color and options standpoint.
Might not make sense to some people but it makes sense to me and is the way I enjoy the hobby. A little weird? Maybe, but life is shortâŠso do what you want đ
@@Rennthusiast I donât find it weird at all. Itâs a different approach than I take, which weâve discussed a bit, but neither of us is wrong.
Each time we have these back and forth discussions I learn more about your approach. I find it interesting and you certainly give me âthings to think aboutâ in my own hobby. Thanks for what you do!!!
after 5 years and two different Porsches(981 CS pdk and a 718 base 6MT) I think I might be moving on to an R8 gated....both cars were great, but it is time for something new....I'm a serial car hunter and just enjoy the variety to chose from. although a 991 is popping up in my head as a possible replacement
Betting you will really enjoy the 992 Carrera T. Love my 992 Carrera but went with PDK and Sport Chrono. Drove the manual, but it just did not measure up in my opinion.
Thanks!
We all love different aspects of the cars, and thankfully porsche gives us the options to choose from đđŒ
I agree man. Although I love manual cars, the PDK is just so so good, that I feel like Iâd be leaving so much performance on the table
I had a 991.2 GTS cab. Like in one of your older videos, I just never bonded with the car even though it was an excellent car. Plus, when it needed a new engine (under warranty thank god), I just lost the 911 urge (for now).
I thought you were going to add the invisible engine to the list; as to the default non-sport mode, it is extremely annoying, but that's for emissions and at least for me, it helps make a 911 much less expensive to tax than pretty much any comparable sports car with their far higher CO2 ratings. The trick is to drive in Sports, of course.
Iâve got a 992 on British country roads..you really have to know the width here đ
I love my 997 with 6 speed Porsche sport exhaust/ seats
You should have got a 991.1, way better driverâs car, one of the best motors for sound and redlining.
Finding a 991.2 manual, especially an S, was damn near impossible. Took me months to find an unmolested one, and it had 50k miles on the odo. Beggars canât be choosers, it was clean and showed like a 10k mile car. Bit the bullet, no regrets whatsoever.
Cereal experience, I totally get it.
Yeah, itâs great. I enjoy it first thing in the morning.
Damn sounds good too!
Hardly find anything annoying about this car!
The reason most modern cars have "sport mode," is likely due to EPA regulations regarding emissions.
"Sport mode," likely tunes the vehicle electronically to boost power, sacrificing fuel efficiency, thus being incompliant.
It's an annoying fact, just like how all modern generations of cars are nearly 50% larger than their predecessor generations due to some ridiculous formula the EPA concocted about how efficient vehicles must be based on their track (the surface area covered by the wheelbase). That's why even "light-duty," trucks are about as large as "heavy-duty," trucks from a few decades ago. Sadly, the 911 has not been immune to this.
Funny, my very rare, 997.1 X51 pack, manual box 2S w carbon Ceramic brakes ⊠just felt ordinary sometimes. Black, loved it clean and hated otherwise! Same w the clutch. Sold it ⊠and now I miss it!
"manual adds to driver experience" say the masses. So go buy a brass era car with manual driver spark advance, hand crank start, hard shifting transmissions and hand actuated transmission brakes. You can explore their limits on public roads and stay within the speed limit. Win-win for everyone. They already have bazillion miles and were fully depreciated long before the oldest of us were born.
On a more serious note, my biggest gripes with manuals is driving them in traffic and the tall gearing in 915 and G50 trannies. Nothing says driver engagement like a 45 minute drive in wine country and never leaving third gear.
edit- my next car will be a manual 996.1, not a manual hater here.
Not being able to see or access the engine is annoying.
Iâll never understand Porscheâs reasoning for this.
Totally disagree on the color. The reason Porsche has made so many Black 911âs is because people like it. Yes there are many people that say they wouldnât own a Black car but there are many that love the color. I have two Black 911âs an â88 I bought new and a â19 GT3 Touring. The â88 has original paint and still looks great. And as far as mileage thatâs the current problem with the market. Miles on a Porsche used to be a badge of honor. My â88 has 153k miles on it and Iâm proud of every mile. This low mileage conversation is relatively new in the Porsche world. If someone is worried about devaluing their car perhaps they shouldnât have bought it in the first place. As someone we all know has said âget out and driveâ
Go get a manual GT3 already ⊠or a bottle of midol
I would love a 997.1 GT3 at some point, but Iâm not there yet. I just ordered a 992 T to replace this with. www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a42030495/2023-porsche-911-carrera-t-drive/

Time to spec a new 911 to your liking.
Exactly what Iâve done. Iâll share the journey in future videos.
I love my 991.1 and I don't care about miles.
You should probably have bought a GTS
too funny I bitch to everybody about the sport mode on the 911, why is sport mode not the default. first world problems I know but I constantly forget to turn it on.
Porsche listen to your customer base about these things.
In my 991.2 and now my 992 the first thing I do it go to Sport mode, for the fun and sound but also turning off the auto start stop mode, that doesn't belong in a 911.
The size is subjective but what does help is the rear axle steering to give it a smaller feel. My 991.2 didn't have it, my 992 does and I do like it and would spec it again.
Manual is a must and the 992 is even better than the 991.2 - especially if you go with a T due to the shorter shift lever.
As far as specialness, you need full leather - my 992 has it and it's a huge upgrade. Also sport seats are a must for me too. The T comes with some specialness baked in and that might be the answer to most of your concerns (clutch is still light though).
My main negative for the 992 is the price, they are getting very expensive - I paid $84k for a used 2018 T with 5k miles in 2021. Sold it for $113k (sticker) and my 992 was for MSRP and was $143k... that hurt.
Overall I much prefer the 992, save for the goofy door handles that are overly complex and the exhaust is a bit quiet but I hear that it does open up a bit after a couple thousand miles (I'm still in break-in).
I actually just ordered a T last week. Itâs slated for November delivery. Iâm super excited. I ordered 18 way seats (yes I know it flies into he face of the intent of the T but I want comfort)âŠhowever, now I am a little worried that they might not be as comfortable as they sound. Iâm going to try to find a 911 with 18 ways to try this weekend actually.
Did you run 18 ways? If so, what are your thoughts?
@@Rennthusiast You're going to love it. 18-ways should be fine so long as you don't go for the ventilated seat option (it adds a hard air bladder inside the seat bottom and makes the seats uncomfortable). I got the 4-ways and I am happy with them - I'm around 6' tall and 190lbs. but YMMV. I even got the back seats in my T (sacrilege I know but I wanted the added usability and could justify the 911 over the 718 that way đ )
An old guy who was driving a gtr, dude was in his 60s, told me once "the hardest part of having nice sports cars is buying the first one". Then he went on to say that after your in the game you just watch your miles and take care of it until its time to use it as capital to get into the next one. He also said that you gotta stay active at it or you will end up with your forever car if it loses to much value.
This conversation took place around 2014,the Nissan was a 2012.
He said he had an opportunity to either get the gtr or a LFA.. and there goes the sad, scary part of the story... That guy still has that cursed gtr todayđź
Thatâs why you should drive your spyder đ and sell the 911
Spyder has gotten driven almost every day for the past couple of months. Amazing machine. The buckets make it a little impractical for around town errands but I do it anyway.
Porsche guys whining about stupid little things while the rest of us dream of just being able to drive one some day.
đ
Sorry, it does not make any sense at all to say it is annoying because it is hard to find a manual.
Youâll be annoyed when you canât find one
Sure thing, but to say something is annoying about a car should pertain to the inherent quality of the object rather to its availability.
Your orange side markers annoy me đ đ đ đ I thought I am gonna hear something really drastic about your 991.2 but all your problems seem to be first world problems đ đ đ đ
You could be right.
Youâre worried about miles and you have other Porsches please this reel is so snobbish drive it and sell it!
How is trying not to lose money âsnobbish?â đ
I achieved my goal with the car and am now moving into a similar 911 (992 Carrera T) and built it around what I learned I liked and didnât about this .2.
I also said itâs a tongue in cheek thingâŠ.
@@Rennthusiast it sounded that way to me evidently you have coins to have various cars they are investments but only brings what the market for those cars being weâve seen the highs and the lows yet as I said you have multiple cars Great tongue-in-cheek a profit yet it wonât always happen if u want a museum piece and you want to keep its value donât drive it but then again it can lose value just sitting. Wake up and Live my friend you canât take it with you!
