  • @spencerantoniomarlen-starr3069

I stopped working out for around months last year due to life circumstances (I moved from California to Spain into a TINY ass apartment, no space for nothing) and lost a lot of the extremely mediocre level of fitness I had achieved by mid 2022 after I had resumed working out in mid 2021.
And read this book called Body by Science which advocates for single reps until failure, using time under load rather than number of reps, and short workouts. I got a gym membership here in Spain in January, been using this high intensity training method since then and my results have been much better than any previous time I have done resistance training before!
However, I have really really weak hands and forearms with no stamina. I was born with disabled hands. This is making it hard for me to continue this approach for some muscles, mostly biceps, as I get stronger, because it is hard for me to hold and control anything larger than a 30 lb dumbbell in my hand (except for trap shrugs because I don't move it around). Does anyone here have any suggestions or ideas?

  • @kdub1242
    @kdub1242 Před 2 lety +9

There's no magic. If intensity comes up sufficiently, volume can (and should) go down. From Arnold at one end to Mentzer at the other, the data is there (for naturals too, but they're not so famous). But there's no free lunch either. It's not easy to go to total failure; you really have to push yourself. But - it _is_ easy to gauge progress. No worries about independently tracking sets and reps. You just warm up and then go all out. When you eventually get lots of reps, you can add weight and repeat. Simple.

I'm 61, been training off and on for 40 years, retired powerlifter and out off the gym (off and on) for the past 5 years due to a major work accident. My original background is running plus 8 years in the Armed forces; reccon special forces where I learned to push the body beyond its limits. Back then I was 145 lbs and no one could keep up with me.
Flash forward; out off the military and then several years later got into powerlifting after bringing my body weight up to 160/165 lbs. I didn't take powerlifting as seriously as I should have, I was just having fun and pushing myself to see what I could do. 15 years later I brought my body weight up to 188 lbs for training then down to 182 lbs for my weight class in powerlifting. Back story: competed in PL in 92 and 93, then 14 years later, then 7 years later. My last two competitions were 2014 and 2016 (both were first place for my age and weight class).
Flash forward; in 2017 I had a major work accident and dropped my body weight down to 1533 lbs plus one year away from work. Tried several times to get back into my powerlifting style of training but it wasn't adequate for me anymore. So for the past 8 months I was doing hi volume, lots of supersets with short rest periods and brought my weight back up to 180 lbs........I was loving my training but there was something missing, something to push myself even more; then I discovered HIT and been researching it for about a week and came across the Godfather of HIT Mr. Dorian Yates.
Friday, two days ago, I did my first upper body HIT day. I'm still feeling the pump from two days ago. Today I did squats but found out I can't do high reps squats because my back is the limiting factor. from the accident; however, I can do heavy squats for reps of 3 or 5 no problem. Today I was supposed to do 175 lb squat for 6-8 reps but did 12 and could have done 15 but my back gave out.
After watching lots of videos of Mr. Yates talking about HIT and taking people through different exercises I've decided I'll do heavy squats one Sunday (reps of 3-5 for sets of 3-5) and the the next Sunday will be HIT leg day (Leg extension, leg press, hack squat, leg curls and either RDL or SLDL).
What do you think about this type of training:
Friday will be HIT upper body. Sunday will be heavy squats for 3-5 reps pf 3-5 sets. Tuesday will be HIT upper body. Friday will be HIT upper body. Sunday will be HIT leg day. Tuesday will be HIT upper body. Then the two week cycle will repeat itself. After about 6 weeks of HIT I'll do 2-3 weeks of lighter weights then back to HIT training again.
I haven't figured out which exercises or body parts I'll do on each upper day but after about a week I'll have it dialed in, hopefully.

I watch Dorians training vids for motivation but don't bring it to that level of failure on my sets since I'm just a regular guy. I usually stick to 8-12 reps of form failure for 1 working set and keep the weight controlled in the eccentric and throw in pause reps when needed. Greatest part is the time efficiency of HIT.

@@SuperLari1234 I would say that each individual should listen to their body. If they need more recovery then they should take it. Each person is an individual and will respond differently to different aspects of training.
The thing with the HIT style of training is like you mentioned with the Platz workout, is that you push your body to its limits. Therefore adequate recovery is needed for the muscles to repair and grow.
Dorian has a good analogy to explain this, relating to the skin and sand paper.
Thing with studies are that most have some form of bias, one way or another.
I have trained a traditional "Arnold" way or training and also done the DY high intensity training too. I found that for me different body parts responded differently to different styles of training. So now I have a training regime that implements the best of both worlds.

Tried endless different training Methods throughout the decades. And always got the best results from volume training. There’s only been one champion in bodybuilding using HIT method. And that’s Yates. All the great bodybuilders past and present have achieved great physiques through volume training.
