COASTAL SPEY FISHING - Catching Seatrout on double handed rods!

- This week we are back at the coast, to test out something new! The past couple of trips Daniel has been fishing Seatrout with light spey rods, with great succes!
This method of fishing is especially beneficiary if you have a injury in the shoulder or elbow, as the power need to deliver a succesful cast, is minimal.

Hi Daniel Loving the videos. I was considering this set up for sea trout on Irish coast. What do you think is the better option is it the 11,3 #4 or the #3. I presume the heavier is better for windy conditions but is there much of a difference. Can the smaller of the two cast multiple flies at same time

I have the exact setup, what length of leader and tippet Do you recommend, I'm new to switch fishing, been using one hand rod for the past 10 years and I'm having trouble getting my fly out of the water.
Excellent video. I’ve been moving towards light two handed fishing for some years, both river and lake as it is so much easier on the body and needs little room for a back cast. Recently I used one on a Welsh reservoir during very windy conditions. With wind from the right I was able to fish using left hand up single spey whilst my friend, a right handed caster was blown off the water.

Two handed rods are not So good, for "Stealth" presentations, such as dry fly fishing or even some instances of wet fly fishing, on Still water (lakes). Also they're not a good choice for Atlantic Salmon fishing on real Small streams, and in my case Steelhead and Pacific Salmon fishing on small creeks. As for large rivers, it doesn't matter which you choose. 3 to 5 Meters from my living room Window, I've caught many Steelhead (mostly Winter Strain), and lots of Coho, and Kings up to 45 pounds (about 24.5 Kilos?). And our State and Federal Fish Hatcheries do a Magnificent Job!! A Fly tier, named Mikael Frodin who keeps Trashing Hatchery Salmon, just doesn't Know anything, to be talking about them, as he's not qualified!! The Hatchery Salmon and Steelhead are released as Pre-Smolts (very small), in the rivers and then they go to the Ocean, exactly the same as Wild or Native Salmon then they feed on the same animals as the Wild and Natives in the Ocean 😊 I'm a Fish Pathologist, and have lived in the Pacific Northwest, for Over 45 Years, and have assisted the Fisheries Biologists!! I was Formerly a consultant for the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Our Hatchery Steelhead come back from the Ocean, just as Large and healthy as the Native or Wild ones!! And the same goes for the Pacific Salmon species!, and also they Fight just as hard as the Native or Wild ones!! 😊 Frodin may be Confusing them with "Farmed Fish", and those are both Worthless as Game-Fish and Food fish😂 And it's Extremely Unintelligent to farm them, as an example, it takes 5 Pounds of Anchovies for each pound of Farm raised Fish (Scientifically Proven Fact)!! And as an award winning scientist, I Only deal in Facts, not hypotheses or Stories!!!😊 It's Very funny to hear people like Frodin, calling them "ARTIFICIAL" 😂😂😂🤣🤣 Good luck, with your Salmon or Sea-Run Brown Trout (Salmon trutta), fishing!! By the way The Very Largest anadromous Browns that I've caught or seen and heard of are in the Southern Mazandaran Sea (Russian name Caspian Sea). Once as a Teenager, I tied a funky fly with some Neon colored Yarn from my mother and Aluminum Foi stolen from her Kitchen, for the body, with and added handmade thin and long piece of Tin, for weight on the Body!! I caught a 50 Lb.Plus, Sea-Run Brown and I hate to admit, but my family and I had a feast and ate it!! In those very early days even Lee Wulff, hadn't started Catch and Release yet!! I just pray to God that the Religious fanatics in Charge, haven't Commercially Netted the shit out of all of them 😔 They're already making the amazing Beluga Sturgeon Extinct for Khaviar!! That's just Stupid, or Worse!!
Nice video. What are your experiences with disturbing of sea trouts by spey casting on coastal? Is it a big problem or marginal? What do you mean about it, please?
you nailed, the over hang, and down wind parts are missing, overall a great info as always, bring more in real time surf, guys are missing a lot out there...!!

great video! Have you got to try a O.P.S.T head? they are ultra short have almost no taper so they turn over anything! I guide with them, so when a elder someone with no experience can just roll cast and the line will take a large weighted intruder or brass tube out there no problem.... and fit on anyriver while being light. .... they are the shorter skagit and less tapered then others. I only use rio or airflo when i need distence Great for our not as wide but deeper steelhead rivers. what do you think guidelines ultra light scandi 3D or salmologic short cut head ? For north america not many about such neat sinking scandi's. great for small seatrout and salmon rivers in ireland or where you are.
I have an OPST head but find it very splashy compared to an integrated shooting head line.
Fishing for pompano flordia surf breaking waves were distance is important. What would you recommend in setup. Im 65 and have a sage 8wt r8 saltwater rod that taxes my shoulder after a short while the blue pill doesn't help. Lost to change
How would you compare these to using say Nam Ren 11'6" #6? I'd imagine better in wind at least and should work with 8-9wt singlehand coastal lines. Or what I was planning Vision Hybrid with clear intermediate tip.

Thanks for the video. And about spey, or troutspey: I started practice with double handers because I thiught, Why only for Salmon? We dont have salmon here. But we have big Pike.Zander etc .And why not? Its convieniant (no back space) .they cast really big streamers. It seems only logical to also use it for sea trout.

Haha awesome! Yeah, it has a multitude of applications! I believe the flyfisherman has addaptet a "as light as possible" mantra around our hobby! :) and therefore never really made the conncetion :)
i tried with short switch trout spey in denmark last year and it was fun, why did you choose a skagit line? they make more noise in the water and they are used for heavy streamer while the standard streamer ( shrimp and so on) for trout are light.( just for info, it is not a criticism)
Im 100% ocean fly fisherman, noise was a concern to me also, over the years I learned that, (not ''lake'' like conditions, as shown in the clip) the open ocean and estuaries are very dynamic environment, tides, wind and surf sets move a lot of sediments, pebble rocks crash to each other right at the feeding zone, noise factor on skagit presentations is not a deal breaker in this rude scenarios, also, noise, is not caused by the mass in the line but, because of the casters lack of tempo, local hunters say... ''it's always the indian fault not the arrow..." (just for info, not for criticism)
, i am not an expert in sea fishing, but in denmark often is like a lake and the trout are quite sensitive . if you don't need skagit for heavy flies, better scandi, more delicate
Well most days it is pretty rough fishing in surf and waves. So the skagit is for that. if it is calm i would bring my light 5wt one hand or even lighter gear. So this is the best allround setup, for this type. It is of course possible to refine, adjust and finetune it all for specific conditions, but this is the best starting setup. There will be a follow up video about this where we will approach this with more hardcore nerdy depth :)
I'm now trying a setup #5 11ft with a Rio switch chucker line this setup is really easy to handle .only really disadvantage it's not easy to fish is the last 10 meter from shore .if you want to these last meters you must get the line in till the leader than you must make a few false casts to bring the line on length before you fire these line out

Those are the Lamson Liquid (old model) and the Lamson Speedster HD :)

What length is a switch rod...?and spey rod confusing.
Essentially all rods below something like 11'5" is considered a switch rod. It's just a termanoligy that refers to the possibility of using the "doubblehanded rod" as a single hand rod. :)

Shocking price to pay for those rods they certainly are not worth anywhere near that money that total outfit is a waste of time to be honest why in the name of Christ go so light.
The principle is not to go as light as possible :) This is just the class of rod, that matches the weight of the heads we normally use for coastal fishing. This setup is all about adapting the spey principle to the coastal fishing.
The application is also important, for people with injuries, who can't physically can't haul a single handed rod :)

Thx for the video. For me, as an angler with permanetly shoulder an hip problems, this can be the way back in Fly fishing. With the one handed fly rod, doing overhead cast, im done after 2hrs of fishing. With the spinning rod, using blinkers or fly on the sbirolino i can do it for 5 to 6 hrs. On good days even longer.
I think spey or skagit style with the one hand is a way to get back into it without buying a switch or spey rod.
By the way, few years ago I asked an Instructor here in Germany " would spey work on the coast"? His answer was " no", you proofed he was wrong!

@@markushiller1753 Yes he was wrong! I never liked one hand rods, so when I go fish on the coast (which I dont do too often tbh) I go with a switch rod and do as this guy do in this video! Been like that for years and its very fun and relaxing.

Thanks for your answer. I'm about to buy a skagit commando head and train skagit with the one hand rod. When that "fits" to my injuries I will take the next step and will buy a trout spey /switch rod for fly fishing.
