Micro Spey Fly Fishing and BIG TROUT on the DESCHUTES RIVER - by Todd Moen

- Micro Spey or Trout Spey Fly Fishing techniques has proven to increase trout fishing success on larger rivers where single hand rod techniques work, but just can't cast line far enough compared to the two hand trout spey. Catch Magazine's 69th Edition features a video shot on its home waters - Oregon's Deschutes River. "Scandinavian Wrangler" was filmed mid - summer of 2020, just months into the pandemic restrictions set in Oregon. So, without international travel as an option and aiming to "fish local," Todd teamed up with his good friend Jakob Lund to meet for a microspey project in their 'backyard.' Jakob, known by many as "The Viking," is the best of the best on film and has logged tremendous amounts of hours with Todd on camera over the years for Catch Magazine.

Lent a vehicle named "Gronk" by Portland-based Roamerica, Todd and Jakob documented a day of fishing with a van, a man and a micro spey fly rod. "Scandinavian Wrangler" aims to capture the Wild West of the Deschutes, the magic of the Warm Springs stretch of the river during wildfire season and the cowboy/viking from Denmark at his best. Thanks to Guideline Eyegear, R.L. Winston and its new micro spey series of rods, Outcast Sporting Gear, Roamerica, and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. 50+ years fishing the D for me, having the luxury of growing up in central Oregon. I took up Spey casting many years ago and just recently picked up an Echo 3wt. Trout Spey. I'm really enjoying catching those fat redsides on a spey rod! Thanks for the inspirational video, you really captured the highs and lows of what we love to do.
Ah! My home river! One of the reasons I moved to Oregon 35 years ago.
Some of those 'Redsides' are like hooking a passing freight train. You just hold on while you watch your line disappear.

Absolutely amazing! I’ve paused the film multiple times to look at that fly, but wet its hard to tell. A natural of some sort, hen hackle maybe and rabbit cannot tell, looks awesome 🤙

It's almost impossible to pick the 'wrong' fly on that river. Although there are times the fish can get picky, it's usually more about presentation. Swing any small wet fly...naturally drift any dark nymph...or drift any of two dozen different dry flies and you'll hook fish.

Dude, at some point in my life, I'd love to wet a line with you. I'm not a pro, but spend an average of about 120 days per year hunting all kinds of salmonids. My home water are the Catskills. I cannot tell you how much the Deschutes reminds me in size, flow, character and the exact same looking huge rainbows as the Big D or Delaware River. Like mirror copy all the way around. Average Bow on the Big D is 18-20 inches...your videos are always amazing.

Some of my best memories are fishing the lower Deschutes in the late 70's and again in the 90's.
A wonderful fishery although I liked it much better before people started rafting it in droves. That's the way it is to grow old.

Awesome video it makes me want to get to the D having said that all of us who love the D know that she is under attack. Anglers need to educate themselves on the facts. Steelhead fishing is closed 2021 on this river for a reason. The hallmark of this river is really in jeopardy. Please search for ways to help. Deschutes River Alliance is a great starting point. Tight lines to all my fellow anglers.

Yes, that is one technique. All depends on the depth and movement... current flow will be the main factor of all this.

Absolutely. This small raft is built by Outcast Sporting Gear. It’s called the OSG Commander. Great small craft for getting around quickly.

you must have caught every trout in the river, dont get up set about losing a fish and throwing your rod in after it we all lose fish some closer to the net than others, that is why its called fishing not catching,, on that end,, your boat was set up nicely what kind of boat is that,,,,,,, thank you for taking us along

Swinging flies for me has become the dry fly purism I've read about in the past

Are these brown trout or rainbows? Usually browns have larger spots ringed with brown…but I have seen them with the smaller dark spots similar to rainbows. So it often throws me off.

This is a totally different ball game and not really something that is looked at as settling but something fun an angler can do all year around if you love the two hander. And it's fun...
Steelhead runs are WAY down, _but 'settle'?_ Far from it! As long as you match your gear to the size of the fish, it can be BETTER than steelhead fishing.
Fighting a Redsides on a 4 or 5 weight rod with 5X tippet is every bit the challenge that steelhead is, and the sheer number of fish you hook in a day is better than any steelhead day I've ever had. I love the Deschutes. It's one of the reasons I moved here 35 years ago.
