- I went solo this morning as the forecast was nasty, wet, and a summer storm came in hard. There is a river within a reasonable drive of my house that can kick out some dandy fish on days like this. Sorry for the dark picture, it was wet and stormy! Plus it was early in the morning. During the summer season early morning streamer fishing is the best.

Hey Joe, often I here streamers with troutspey, but what about traditional featherwing flies like the classic salmon and steelhead flies. Can you do a short video about those kind of flies scaling it down for trout.

You have nailed down the snake roll my friend! It's quite impressive, and probably the hardest to get the timing right with a skagit line, imo at least. You make it look so easy.
Also, I thought the way you handled the big fish loss was equally impressive. Total maturity in defeat, a good lesson for younger anglers.

Love your vids, Joe! I'm a dedicated spey guy in the Willamette Valley. Cutties have been on fire with soft hackles! Thx for droppin' a ton of science especially on trout spey.

@devinshook3289 Lots of access to the Willamette from Dexter to town. McKenzie is tougher to wade, but Hendricks Bridge, Harvest Lane and Armitage are all good for wading.
@christiancherry1377 honestly, have yet to catch a trout at Armitage. Gunna try soon though

If it makes you feel any better the last two days on the Yakima I’ve lost 18 inch+ rainbows.. I actually saw you floating down the farmlands releasing a fish, one of the big boys was hanging just up river from there.

On that first cast was your shooting head barely out of the rod tip? And for each cast how far does the head usually need to be away from the tip if not using an integrated line? I don’t get any leverage on my setup unless the head is right up near my rod tip. Sorry for the noob question, thx!
Yes, put that head/running line transition right at the rod tip, especially when wading more than knee deep. The sink tip/leader length also affects this a great deal so it's dynamic. With a short sink tip and 3' leader, I might leave up to 2' of running "overhang" out the tip. With a 15' sink tip and 5' leader I might even have to pull the head in a foot or so. Each rig has a sweet spot, try to be consistent and find that magic spot.

Don't be afraid to throw a mop on a trout spey it'll outproduce 95% of the streamers. Kind of comical but it's still the best fly for trout spey, kind of embarrassing but we overthink flies
