I was searching for why I left surgery and then i found your video.
I am 40 and i WAS a consultant surgeon. I switched on to radiology after cracking the exam. It's a lifestyle modification for me now.
Surgeons are actually rewarded very less for what they do.
That must have been a really difficult decision to make and I really hope it worked out well for you! Thank you for sharing that
Hi doc I'm a young doctor troubled btw surgery and radiology..loved surgery but worried about taking surgery bcoz oy many years of gruelling training ahead and work life balance problems?
Can you share your opinions and advice?
@@ashwinshaji1572 stick to your CHOICE. If surgery is your choice, go for it. What you choose now will remain for the rest of your life.
Thanks for posting this- really sorry you had a tough time in CST. Current CST having a similar experience. Congrats on the training number- very well deserved! Looking forward to your radiology videos.
Thank you, I hope everything goes well for you as well, whichever path you choose!
Hi, I just wanted to say your CST interview videos were a HUGE help to me and recieved a ranking I wouldn’t have gotten without them. Best of luck on your new journey :)
Thank you! I'm so glad to hear that those videos actually helped someone and a big congratulations on getting a ranking! Good luck on your future career!
Your CST interview videos are fantastic! Tough call but thanks for bringing this decision making out to the open to help others, you will succeed in any path you choose. Wishing you all the best!
Thank you and I’m glad you found them useful! Good luck with your applications!
Well done! It takes a lot of courage to leave a path and join another. You will achieve and succeed.. and have more time and fun! You will never regret trying your dream out first.
Thank you so much, I think that is great advice. I wish you the best as well!
Hey Jack, best of luck with the change. Love the quality of the video production too! See you soon!
Thanks man, appreciate it!

Thanks guys, I'm a huge fan of your podcast!
All the best to you 👍 it takes lot of courage to take such a huge decision
Thank you! And I wish you well in your endeavours too. (ENT is still a fantastic specialty, by the way)!
Thank you for sharing your story! I am in a very similar position to the one you were in and am applying for ST3 ENT training. I really respect that you took ownership of your life, thought about what you wanted long term and switched to radiology. When you lay it out so clearly, I have no doubt you've made the right choice!
Thank you and good luck for your applications!
Way to go Jack! Much love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
Thank you, friend!
Hi, thank you so much for sharing this. Never met you but felt like I was watching a friend talking to me. I'm a CT1 and share some of the struggles you mentioned in your video. It's so good to know I'm not struggling alone. Good luck with your radiology career!
Thank you for your kind words, I hope everything is going okay with your current situation - you are definitely not alone and if work ever gets you down, remember you are more than just your career! Good luck with whichever path you choose!
Hello - this video is very insightful thank you. What do you think about working at less than full time? Do you think working at LTFT would have made a difference? I'm considering surgical training but also worried about work-life balance.
OMG did not expect to see a familiar face on YT Jack! I am so happy you are doing what you like. In case you don't remember me, Saleem ortho SHO from Colch! Lots of love and respect for stopping to introspect and following through the decision to leave this path!
Good to hear from you! Hope all is well on your end - what did you end up doing in the end? Surgery?
Hope to see more of radiology videos on your channel soon
will do!
but we still do night shifts in radiology. however i agree radiology is a better overall lifestyle than surgery. i also switched from surgery to radiology :)
Hi Jack, with taster weeks... did you organise them in your own hospital system? This is more of a logistical question; if you get a taster week for 3 days at a hospital you've never worked at before, who organises the swipe cards and parking access etc (especially on shorter notice)
Your thoughts on AI and outsourcing. I think the need for radiology reads will continue to increase exponentially but how much will be taken over by AI and outsourcing ? Yes, there will always be the need for some radiologists but how many.
Good luck 💕
Thank you!!
i too left surgery albeit general surgery some decades ago. decided did not want to not sleep for 3 years just to get booted in the 3-4 year pyramid cutoff. many a competent 3rd year did not make it into 4th. was very common for residents with 3 years GS to enter rad, anesthesia, or even plastics before it became prestigious. does ENT have a pyramid in the UK ?? USA does not
There are bottlenecks at several stages. For the ENT example, after medical school, you compete for Foundation years (2 years), then for core surgical training (2 years), then finally for ENT ST3 higher surgical training. Afterwards, of course you apply for a consultant job, which is also competitive.
Hello i'm new radiology resident and i used to hesitated between radiology and maxillo surgery.
I choose radiology . But it my second week i'm lost. And don't know if i made the right decision or not.. i was afraid of doing the same operation in surgery plus it take so much time and it's long in my country.. 6 year + 2 years. Vs 5 radiology
Hey, congratulations on choosing radiology! It is much harder at the start of radiology because it's so different to anything most doctors have done before so it feels like being a beginner again. It definitely gets better as you go through so don't quit so soon - at least not before giving radiology a chance!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks can i get contact from this profession
Radiology is hands down the best field in medicine
Am about to make your same decision ,defiantly i will need to speak to you more
Good for you for taking the step - if you have any questions, post them here!
Good luck🙂
Thank you, it's going well so far!
Radiology is much more powerful and respectful to ourself more
I'm a radiology looking fort switching to surgery
I am probably the wrong person to ask about this haha
Good luck with your career choice
Thank you!
Is Radiology profession will replaced by ai
Lol it won't
It is more likely that AI will be a tool used by radiologists to make reporting easier. We are a long way off replacement.
I want to leave medicine for clinical radiology.
Good luck
Thank you!
Hi I am leaving ophthalmology for radiology for same reasons ( for better work life balance & difficulties in some surgical skills).
Want to achieve best from radiology 😊
Can you advise regarding what are the additional qualifications that I can achieve during the training to become a talented and skillfull radiologist.
