Mostly students love seeing patients at the beginning but at some point the rose-colored glasses are off.
People (and therefore patients) in general tend to be unpleasant in multiple ways and the more sensible (empathic/sensitive?) students like me who tend to be those with a focus on reducing suffering in other people will become disillusioned fast because being in a critical situation exposes their true colors.
If a medical student says he doesn't like or even hates dealing with patients then that most often does not mean they felt the same when they started is what I'm saying.

Nice video! Here are My top 5 reasons why I swapped to Radiology from Surgery:
    1. fixed working schedule (get to leave at 16:00 on the dot when I don´t have a nightshift - NO overtime)
    2. less conversations with patients and relatives (can be mentally quite draining for me)
    3. less running around frantically (I get to focus on my images)
    4. very visual (once I saw an interesting case I will probably recognize the next one)
    5. it still has a practical side to it through interventional radiology

It's never too late to change, even if you choose to finish that specialty. I've done 5 years of bioengineering and worked for almost 2 years afterward, but I knew I was never going to be happy and fulfilled and had that feeling that you described "Oh I don't completely hate it. It's a good job, I'm lucky" - but in the end, life is too short and I've decided to go Medical school, cause it was my dream. I'm now a MS1.
Never think that your past experiences and hard work will go to "waste" cause it's not true, if anything they'll make you better in some ways than people who have always been in 1 path :)
I hope you can find your way, whether in radiology or other fields :)

about the "nothing else seemed attracting" reason and kicking out specialties rather than picking one - I did the same
some people start med school with their specialty already in mind and I kinda envied those? so I tried out many specialties during med school, thinking "what if this specialty surprises me" and I'm glad I did because of the different experiences I could gain (recommend this to anyone who is still not sure)
standing for hours as a surgeon is probably what scares me most about pursuing surgery but I know I'll regret it forever if I don't try now :)

I really appreciated your honest and fair take on your diagnostic radiology residency experience. Have you ever considered eventually going over to interventional radiology? The increased patient interaction and minimally invasive surgical procedures seem like they would be a lot more interesting than sitting in a dark room reading all day. I mean even though it won't hold a candle to clinical management in terms of patient interaction and follow up or that satisfaction of seeing your diagnosis and treatment work out, I suppose it is something.

Thank you so much for doing this content. I’m actually planning to apply for Radio Residency because I thought it would be easier compare to other specialties in terms of workload but I guess sitting and looking at the screen for long hours doesn’t mean it’s not tiring. But i guess, just like you, i might feel trap and quite bored because I won’t have anyone to talk to unlike other specialties who talk to patients, nurses & doctors. I actually like doing something with my hand but I was not given the opportunity to participate in the OR other than “retract and suction”, so I just don’t really know if I’ll enjoy surgery. I actually like INTERNAL MEDICINE at first because I love physics but the only problem is I don’t think I can do it.:(

Hello Lena, I don’t know if you can see my comment but here it goes..
I saw you in my last year of high school. I kept following you since then. There wasn’t much medical student who also was taking videos for youtube in 2015-2016. Especially in my country there was like 2-3 people. But despite our country, the language we speak, you were my inspiration. Whenever I felt down during studying for university exam, I always rewatched your vlogs. (Also university exam is really a big thing in my country just like Korea). Finally I got into med school. Not the one that I aimed for but my school is also pretty good. I am in 3rd grade. Time passed like water indeed. I always dreamed to become a med student while watching your videos. I also felt soooo happy when I saw your engagement video.
Sometimes I lose my path too. I don’t know which specialization I will chose. And sometimes I feel so down about med lectures. Then I remember you like I find my lost friend and rewatch your vlogs again. I don’t know how to describe my feelings. I will probabaly not see you in person but you were always by myside like a best friend does. I am so grateful for this. Thank you Lena.
I hope everything will go so perfect for you. ❤️

This is similar to me when I chose my major for college. Nothing seems interesting &I don't want to confine to a specific industry,so I declared my major as biz and mgmt. Tbh now Idk what to do with such a general degree. I can go into managenent role but I am not interested in leadership.

I am the one with no specific interest and ended up choosing radiology by opting out method, though i have not started training yet but isn't it that any post-graduation field of medicine or surgery doesn't have a specific one textbook or source? Rather u have to study a single topic from multiple resources and end up adding missing info in your selected main text book that u r studying

most rads think that emergency radiology is more interesting than msk, at least at my hospital in seattle. :)
neurorads are all extremely intense though. i feel like each area of radiology has its own personality.

Hi, by the way you describe yourself and what you like about medicine maybe you should consider anesthesia because it has the patient interaction, procedures and a lot of medicine

I'm introvert and like to be alone..going to start as a radiologist soon....there's still about 2% liking in cutting specialty and I don't mind standing in long hours..about 1% liking as a general practitioner and serving the poor.....I hope I will not regret my decision..😅😁😅

Lena, have you done mammo rotations? You might really enjoy the biopsies and interactions with the nurses, techs, and patients.
With regards to studying, what you're describing is normal. There's a recommended textbook for each subspecialty of radiology, e.g. Osborne for Neuroradiology, Brant and Helms as general for the first year, etc. If that's too much reading, then you can work through a case review series paired with RadPrimer questions. All other fields will have tons of required readings, including Internal Medicine.
While we're busy during the day and on call, we still have it quite a bit better than our medical and surgical colleagues. Internal Medicine residents regularly have upwards of 30 pending consults at 2 am in the morning at larger academic hospitals, and everyone in the consult room looks like they're about to keel over at any moment from exhaustion. Surgery residents start rounding at 6 am (5:30 am for Thoracics and Neurosurgery) and hand over at 6 pm, leave the hospital close to 7 pm. Surgery call is also brutal, but you know that.
That said, if you still feel truly unhappy in radiology, then you should seriously consider switching to Internal Medicine. Losing two years is a small price to pay for your happiness/mental health and future career satisfaction. Tons of trainees have switched partway through residency. Please don't think that you are stuck on this path if your gut is telling you to do something different.
