  • Welcome to our second ROV SuBastian Dive of this Living Fossils of the Atacama Trench expedition. We are hoping to characterize the microbial and macrofaunal communities in the surrounding areas of the Atacama Trench.
Dive Plan: The primary objective is to explore the ridge area for methane seeps and collect samples (push cores, water, rock, and animal samples) at seepage sites if we locate any. Geologists will collect rock samples as they encounter interesting formations during the dive. The macrobenthos group will not take samples during the exploratory dive unless methane seeps are found. If no seeps are discovered, we will allocate at least 1.5 hours for specimen sampling towards the end of the dive. During this time, we will collect push cores, sediment scoops, rock samples, water samples,
invertebrates, fish, and any anthropogenic debris.

Is 2° common at these kind of depths? Seems a bit cold for Chile from a Scandinavian point of view 😊
