- "Mucky Secrets" is a documentary about the marine life of the Lembeh Strait at the heart of the Coral Triangle off north Sulawesi in Indonesia.
The Lembeh Strait is a popular scuba diving destination, famed for its excellent "muck diving". A huge diversity of exotic marine creatures can be found on the mucky seabed, including everything from tropical fish to benthic sharks to nudibranchs. Critters compete for survival with an armoury including camouflage, mimicry, toxicity, and dazzling coloration.
"Mucky Secrets" is an excellent resource for scuba divers, aquarists, and marine biology students. The documentary features underwater macro footage from many of Lembeh's famous dive sites including Critter Hunt, Police Pier, Tanjung Kusu-Kusu, Nudi Falls, Aer Perang, Jahir, Makawide, Nudi Retreat, Retak Larry, TK (Teluk Kembahu), Hairball and Aw Shucks.
There are subtitles/CC tracks for the narration and for the scientific and common names of the marine species, and dive site names.

This is, hands down, the best privately made documentary I've ever seen, and one of the best documentaries on the Sulawesi reefs/Lembeh strait, period. One of my dreams is to get my diving cert and go here to see the adorable tiny frogfish and if I'm lucky, a flamboyant cuttlefish!

To get the most out of somewhere like Lembeh and to refine your diving skills, I'd suggest doing a fair bit of blue water / non-muck diving first. I was at a large grocery story, and noticed some packages of cuttlefish being sold. I took a package up to the front desk and complained - telling the lady that the store should not sell cuttlefish. She grinned sweetly and told me to look closer at the label. I did. It said 'codfish.' I had misread the label, ha ha.
You showed me that raspberry seahorse. Chef Cat sold love to make him into a raspberry cream dessert....or is it poisonous? Then no way.
When I watch underwater documentaries, I feel like I have had some sort of hallucinogenic drug 😂 I just get mesmerized and submerged into the diver’s and narrator’s experience. This particular doc has a even more soothing and trippy effect due to spectacular videography and narrator’s tone and voice pitch. Loved it. ❤

Agreed Jas. Watch videos about deep sea creatures or else things like nudibranchs, frogfish, jawfish, starfish, urchins, corals opening etc they seem to always use music like The Thing or Alien horror/scifi soundtracks.
While that's cool and all, love those movies, at times something more upbeat where they're not "scary", just fascinating as they are in real life is better imo.

I have been to Lembeh twice. I attest to the amazing creatures that have evolved so that they can thrive in this inhospitable environment. This high-quality documentary makes me both learn the science that studies these species and, mainly, go back to do a lot more muck diving.

Nothing like this even in the documentary world! Most of them are way more Cinematic than informative.
I started this video intending to only watch 15 minutes or so to wind down and go to sleep but DANG it was so interesting the WHOLE TIME I didn’t even realize an hour and a half had gone by! Such a diverse group of life forms I’m in awe. Seems like a dangerous place to dive if you don’t know your stuff, what with all of the poisonous things around!

This is a MUST WATCH video for those of us who keep reef tanks and dive the Indio-pacific. The photography is amazing and the description of each creature is Top Notch! The area where each creature is found is well documented and shows just how much phytoplankton saturation abounds there.

This video is one of the best under water documentaries that I have ever seen. I have watched wildlife documentaries all my life and from that I have gained a real admiration and respect for all life, so I really love documentaries like this one. Its always shocking and exciting that after all these years that I can still see new forms of life that I have never seen before.
The narration is expertly done and very informative. Its videos like this that blow me away at just how much life there is on our planet and the diverse complexities of it. Its utterly mind stagger to think about ALL the life that is around us from botany life to animal life and ALL the special niches that each living thing has. Its videos like this that really proves to me that life was created from a being that is far, far beyond our understanding. The evolution theory could not have been responsible for such a VAST amount of life with extreme diversities and such incredible complexities. I do believe in a form of evolution in that life can adapt to it's surroundings for survival but that change outside of man kinds interference is from the one who created life to begin with. It blows my mind that intelligent people still cling to the theory that ALL life some how evolved from a puddle of primordial ooze and if you think it came from the big bang theory then I would ask, where did the big bang come from then? To believe that from NOTHINGNESS came the entire universe as we know, I feel is the result of willful blindness to where all things really came from.

This is an excellent documentary. The numerous WOW moments are incredible and the information is given in an easy to understand way. I liked having the subtitles below each animal. I also enjoy the way it's broken up into species. I'll likely go back and watch some of my fav parts again. I shared on my fb wall so others can see the marvels in the much.

I watch 100s of nature documentaries (work with university natural sciences dept.) and Mucky Secrets is my favorite-all the more amazing for seemingly being an independent project, not a studio release. The videography is top tier, it showcases a fascinating part of the undersea world, and it features 100s of species with brief, interesting commentary on each one. I return to it again and again.

It would be impossible with words, to thank you all for producing this magnificent work of immense, (public relations ), and scientific value. Perfect addition to lectures, for inspiring, students. I have been enthralled, amazed, nurtured, and in love with the oceans all my 62 years. After 50 years of Jaques Cousteau, David Attenborough, hundreds of books, snorkeling from the Andaman, to Newfoundland , to Florida, and the Pacific North West, this blows them all away with the sheer beauty, diversity, unearthliness, magnificence.
I believe if you could put an ichthyologist, or other expert in thousands of class rooms, for even a day around the world, you would instantly light a fuse to ignite a science explosion among you audience. Imagine lighting that kind of fire, around the world and the explosion of talent, realization, and passion. Thank you for a magnificent journey, Please don't forget the poor people who can't afford to spend a lot. They could one day be the billionaire that funds, the oceanographic international school aboard a repurposed container ship. Let's hope that billionaire comes along soon. Thanks.
Wow, such beautiful creatures. I love the ocean. When I was younger, I used to want to be a mermaid so badly. I eventually got over that phase but I'll never grow out of loving the ocean. It's just so beautiful.

My personal opinion is that all of us don't have it, because what actually happened is there was a hominid branch that went nearly full-mermaid and we raped them, so some people got a lot more of this while others simply don't like or need the water.

The mixture of the ancient scenery and modern structures made me consider just how long modern society has existed and how fragile it is - in a way that I've never looked at it before. What a magnificent documentary. I can't get enough of these. I have to say this one is one of the best. I am a diver and am amazed at how much damage is being done to the planets reefs. I've dove many times in Indonesia and can't believe more isn't being done to protect the reefs. Don't they know that is why tourist come. Also stop the trade of fish. Leave the fish on the reef, not in aquarium's. Some species are being decimated. I find that a real crime. Also in Indonesia they need to stop all the garbage from going into the ocean. Especially plastics. That also has a really bad impact on the reef. Love Indonesia and it's people. So kind. Please do something to protect you reefs.

Surprised by how many creatures new to me. Well paced, beautifully filmed, written and narrated. I hope the dive sites and increased revenue to locals will help preserve this natural treasure.
Wow, this documentary is the best i've seen. When I finished it, I re-watched it, and it was just as fabulous, the second time around. There is so much information, that I caught things I missed on the first viewing. Fabulous. Do not understand the the 1.2K thumbs down. Are you kidding?

This documentary must have taken a lot of work to place together in its editing style and information. It is very well done and I enjoy it. I like the music, it is very relaxing and not overwhelming against the narrator. This is very good quality.

This is more informational then any underwater videos I have seen. Thank you for taking the time to share this documentary with us. I have learned so much from watching this video . I have never seen so many different kinds of fish, coral, shrimp. Etc etc. etc.

This has to be one of the best videos I have ever seen on this subject. I would have to say that about 90% of the sea life I have never seen before. Many of the documentaries I have seen have shown the same marine life over and over. I have to say that at first I wasn't sure I was going to watch the whole video. But before I knew it it was almost over. This was really, really good. Thanks

I have watched this documentary hundreds of times and it keeps getting better and i keep picking up new information. Very informative and interesting! Its a must watch for anyone with an interest in sea life, coral and small creatures. Love it!!
This seriously brings me peace. I've been watching this for years now. I turn this on when I need background noise to sleep. I watch this with my friends when we are chilling. I show my parents this. I show my patients this. every time I watch this I research the fish and nudibranchs. SO beautiful and soothing,NEVER GETS OLD EVER.

Phenomenal. I've been watching nature documentaries/videos for many years and have seen only a handful approaching the quality of this one. The informative captions and subdued yet unusually appropriate music are a plus. I sometimes turn videos off because the music is so offensive, but I actually enjoyed having music in the background here. Thank you!
I usually watch nature shows with captions and turn the volume wayyy down to avoid music but I agree, there are a few that the music is totally fitting. This one is on that list 😊. I appreciate the commentary too.

Thank you! This is such an amazing piece of work! This is far better than anything I’ve seen on discovery or Nat Geo. No dramatization, no annoying host hogging screen time, so many species covered with so much information! I would love to see you cover more locations.
