In the deep ocean, life is concentrated at chemosynthetic oases where primary production is made possible via chemosynthesis at cold seeps and deep sea hydrothermal vents. The non-chemosynthetic regions of the deep are divided into two very different worlds. First is the midwater, where pelagic wanderers tread migratory routes that span entire oceans, and planktonic drifters and their predators take part in bioluminescent light shows. It is separated into zones based on depth, including the sunlight zone (epipelagic), twilight zone (mesopelagic), midnight zone (bathypelagic), abyssal and hadal zones. And below, lies the deep sea floor. A kingdom of mud and ooze, where sessile creatures cling to any solid outcrop and corals craft kingdoms on the seamount crusts. The worlds of the deep sea could not be more different, and yet their stories are fundamentally intertwined. In this episode, we delve into the Twilight Zone.

Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a non-profit oceanographic research foundation that has been pioneering deep-sea research and discovery since 2009, on board their old vessel RV Falkor and their new RV Falkor (too). Their remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is equipped with a suite of sensors and a 4K camera that has illuminated the depths and live-streamed dives around the world. Most footage shown is filmed and provided by SOI. Huge thank you to them for contributing their footage, and working with me to create this series! Check out their website: schmidtocean.org/

I've started posting some previews of episode 2 of this series, covering the Midnight Zone.
Hi all, I’ve been working on this film for 4 months, balancing it with University and other films, so I’m super excited to share this at last! Do let me know if you enjoy. It’s been a pleasure working with Schmidt Ocean Institute and the breathtaking raw footage they so kindly provided. Episode 2 - the Midnight Zone - is underway and I can’t wait for you all to see that too!
Your documentaries are on par with David Attenborough's ngl
I absolutely love your work. Thank you so much for providing such high-quality informative content! You put your heart and soul into these videos and it shows ❤
As will your other presentations - spectacular 👍
Thank you so much. I have to catch a 6am train tomorrow and tonight I'm having a tough conversation with someone. Your work always calms me down and helps me sleep, as well as teaching me new things about the ocean.
I do think you shouldn't take a sponsorship from Masterworks again, though. They don't educate their customers well on the risks of the art market.
Thank you for your work ❤
This is what I’m looking for.
No dramatised tv films, just facts about the natural world beautifully put together.
I’m one of the ROV pilots for SOI. That siphonophore was longer than 50m. That was just the outer ring. That glass octopus was also much bigger than 40cm. What a great video. Thanks for putting all that together
Amazing ❤
I envy you your job xxx
150ft all those different things put together was that long jeez
And they say there are no aliens..😂😂😂
I really enjoyed this entire video. The stunning otherworldly footages, calming music and your soothing voices. Looking forward to the next episode!
The production value in these videos are insane. Well done!

What a wonderful addition to your already fantastic channel offerings, Leo! Mesmerizing and beautifully produced as always. Oh my goodness, thank you so much Danika!! This means the world, and your feedback is just wonderful!! Thank you!! It’s always brilliant to hear from you. I’m excited for you to see episode 2 when it’s ready! ☺️

Thank you for presenting nature and ocean life in a way that doesn’t make everything seem weird, creepy, alien and crazy. I have dearly missed more matter-of-fact and down to earth presentations of nature that were lost for a while during the reality tv booms that gained foothold in discovery and animal planet.
I love your channel so so much. I can’t wait for more
Totally agree with you.. 👍 What a lovely comment
Yes, beautifully stated and absolutely spot on!👍🏻 I am often brought to the edge of tears by the stunning beauty of the delicate beings that Leo presents for us so well.

I'm only a bit over halfway through, but I wanted to say - beautiful work. You have such a knack for making these videos. I was completely enthralled (the footage of that Glass octopus took my breath away)and you've completely captured that childhood wonder I had while watching documentaries like this as a kid. Even how you narrate is perfect; gentle, clear, and slow. You've made something absolutely beautiful.
Grab your popcorn and goggles, everyone!! It’s going to be phenomenale
Oh man it didn't start and i'm already excited and sad that it will end
great video, even considering the wet popcorn

These documentaries are amazing. Honestly one of the best nature documentaries I've ever watched.

It's like watching from a museum show, always fascinated about the water world.
Thank you so much for supporting me!!! And I’m so glad you enjoyed! ❤️
"The deep sea floor is, at first glance, a place of filth and decay -- destitute, perhaps, and full of horrors. But if we look a little closer, we uncover a place of beauty -- a realm where corals craft mighty kingdoms on the seamount crusts; where the delicate structures of sponges provide refuge for others; and where scavengers attend bountiful feasts that last for decades."
This is just _achingly_ poetic.
this film is so beautiful. the sound design, music, narration, and footage are all so breathtaking. the creatures are described with awe and respect instead of fear or discomfort. it’s very refreshing to see. i’m excitedly awaiting the release of the second episode!!!
Thank you so much, this means the world!! These films are first and foremost simply my hobby / passion project that I’m slowly hoping to adopt as a full time career, so hearing this kind of feedback is so wonderfully motivating. Thank you!

Whoever did the sound design for this video did an amazing job. Really well done sound effects and background music to keep people captivated.
Thank you so much! That’d be me (Leo) 😁 I do everything except film the raw footage, which in this case was kindly supplied by Schmidt Ocean’s ROV!
Their footage comes without audio so I had to add in and design every water movement, every beat of a fin or swoosh. It was a lot of fun, and this comment’s made it feel like it paid off!! Thank you so much!

Just wow. Your scripts for these stunning videos of yours, is both education and art. I cant believe this channel is real. Thank You
Thank you 🥰
The consistency in quality of your scripts and narration really do justice to the enthralling subject matter. I've learnt so much from your channel and thoroughly enjoyed my time doing so!
I find myself really curious about what the migratory creatures make of Sebastian's lights and cameras - I would have thought they might mistake them for daylight and try to instinctively dive deeper to maintain their camoflague from potential predators... perhaps even more curious about the abyssal creatures, which are used to perpetual darkness and likely have never even encountered a light source!
I would have expected at least those with eyes, being adapted for such low light levels, might be blinded and scarper instantly; yet for the most part they always seem as if it's business as usual on film!
TIA if you have either any known insights or personal speculations about this? In the meantime thankyou for another fantastic film, can't wait for the next!
As a visual learner these kinds of films make me remember so much more than a book ever can.
I’m the same! It’s one of the reasons I always try to use almost exclusively footage in my films, rather than stills or random b-roll.
please never stop making these! i save watching them until i can truly appreciate them, and it is worth it! amazing!
The part where the firefly squid float ominously was so beautiful and haunting at the same time.
Wow! I thought to myself when I first discovered your film that I had encountered something reminiscent of Wild Discovery or many of the older nature documentaries. However, what you've made here far exceeded this expectation. You have wonderfully descriptive, factual, and expertly written narration such that you don't embellish or seek to add to nature's beauty but yet you enhance the experience of it and plant the seeds of many thoughts, learning, and appreciation with it too. I don't know that I've ever seen scientific narration performed so skillfully! The cinematography is absolutely enthralling and very well edited. It flows and synergizes with your narration perfectly. I look forward very much to seeing more of your work; it is a true gift! Thank you!

YAY! It’s finally here 😁!
The beauty of the firefly squid - and the mood you create - astound me. You've curated a fabulous work of art 🎉
The issue of ocean plastic makes me weep in light of this documentary. You are a gifted documentarian and are helping to open our eyes to the intrinsic worth of places like this - necessary to our world's existence, but unseen by most
The problem is that a lot of ocean life really isn't necessary for our life on land. We can survive just fine without it. As such a lot of people sadly don't give a shit. Humans are selfish parasites who don't care about other life unless it directly benefits them in some way. The only way any big names will ever care about marine life is if there's profit to be made off of them.
Hopefully this mentality changes as the older generations who run these companies rot and die. And hopefully Hell also exists, just for them.
Darn well done. You had me hooked from the beginning. Thank you so much 🙏🏻😀

Agreed.
Fun fact: the guanine in the silvery fishes' skin is the same guanine in DNA.
I can't wait for the next installment!! This is one of the most fascinating things I have ever seen, and it instilled in me that same childlike awe and fascination I have had with the world since I was a child--a feeling I too often forget these days. Please keep up the great work!! I'm in great appreciation and wonder.
Take your time and we'll be waiting!

Absolutely Amazing! Thank you so much for this. I shared this with my family and told them not to watch it on their phones, only their TV. I can't wait for the next one.
