5 Major Treaties & Alliances in the Build Up to World War One

  • The First World War is often interpreted as fought between two major alliances - the Triple Entente between France, Britain and Russia, and the Dual Alliance linking Germany and Austria-Hungary.
    But this oversimplifies the alliances, treaties and agreements that developed throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and drew the Great Powers, along with numerous other countries, into war.

    The Dual Alliance was a defensive alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, which was created by treaty on October 7th, 1879 as part of Germany's Otto von Bismarck's system of alliances to prevent or limit war. The two powers promised each other support in case of attack by Russia. Also, each state promised benevolent neutrality to the other if one of them was attacked by another European power (generally taken to be France, even more so after the Franco-Russian Alliance of 1894). Bismarck saw the alliance as a way to prevent the isolation of the German Empire, which had just been founded a few years before, and to preserve peace, as Russia would not wage war against both empires.

    Italy did not 'renege' on their part of the Triple Alliance, the alliance agreement between the three nations was if they were to be declared on by Russia however Germany made the declaration of war against Russia as a result of their mass mobilization and alliance with Serbia. therefore Italy did not feel break the Triple Alliance.

    • @Kanoshem
      @Kanoshem Před 6 lety +5

      Snakeyboy yes but then they broke it by fighting Austria 😂

    • @germanshepherd2701
      @germanshepherd2701 Před 6 lety +5

      Kanoshem the real/better explanation is that Italy sought powerful allies given its weak position, but it was still better to avoid war in any case. So, when it joined the Triple Alliance the agreement for Italy was one of a defensive pact. Should Austria or Germany be attacked, then Italy would either remain neutral or support their ally. Since Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia it was the aggressor, so Italy had no obligation to join technically (sort of a lawyerly excuse but at the same time that was the official stipulation).
      Remember, like Germany, Italy was a relatively new nation. Unlike Germany it lacked competent leadership and was mostly unified through war with other Italian states rather than solidified & united by external conflict (as the North German Confederation unified with the south via the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars). Italy was a land of disparity much more so than Germany which still had inter-state disputes but to lesser extent than Italian differences especially in infrastructure and economy. Its peoples all had different cultures. Their military was lackluster. So without an obligation to defend Germany or Austria it was free to pursue more of its own self-interest. Thus, with the realization of the war, it came down to a cost-benefit analysis and in the end the Entente Powers had more to offer, namely territory. They “formally” left the alliance in 1915 with another treaty but they already had no remaining responsibility to the Central Powers the very day Austria-Hungary declared war.

      PP Hyjynx so let me get this straight. You think that if Britain joined the Central Powers that would have saved Europe? From what? WW1 would have still happen. But instead of a humiliated Germany that turns into a nationalistic dictatorship, it would have been France or Russia who would try to avenge their mocking defeat.
      It is ridiculous to think that the war could have been avoided if only Britain switched sides.

    • @pphyjynx8217
      @pphyjynx8217 Před 7 lety +2

      well if germany won ww1 then the kaiser would have still been in power, Hitler would not have been listened to. The only reason the Nazi party were elected was because of the shape of germany at the time, but if they won then their economy would not have been bad.
      Russia left ww1 in 1917 with the russian revolution, that event would still take place and france would not be able to rebuild itself like Germany did, it does not have the resources

      Thomas Owusu-Abayie and swizerland was able to keep their neutrality because they did a lot of money transfers for the German reich. Germany needed a neutral state for the money transfers and the good conditions. And furthermore they gave Germany a lot of armaments. So Switzerland did a lot of questionably thinks to save their neutrality. I mean, it's totally understandable because they had no other chance, but it's not that easy as you said like: "we don't want to get involved, so we can stay neutral"

That's the same thing as if we counted the Egiptians or Indians as "British". Second, as I've already said, most of them died because of unability of supply organisations. TheInsomnio12 no, actually. The German Empire invaded Belgium at about 8:02 am (local time, so it would be 7:02 am for Great Britian). In response, the UK sent an ultimatum which expired at midnight, (so 11pm for Great Britain), and it wasn't fulfilled, thus a state of war existed between Germany and the United Kingdom since 11pm August 4, 1914. Which was 15 hours AFTER Germany invaded Belgium.

      Well, aside from, you know, supporting an offensive war (the Triple Alliance was a defensive pact, not an aggressive one), declaring war on Russia because the Russians mobilized, causing France to come and help the Russian, declaring war on Belgium, whose independence was guaranteed by the UK... They even sunk US ships and sent that telegram to Mexico to attack the USA, which angered the US gov so much it chose to side with the Entente.
      Yeah, they did nothing wrong. Aside from everything regarding diplomacy and unrestricted submarine warfare.
