  • Inkscape step-by-step beginner-intermediate tutorial on how to create custom minimalist map art as seen on Etsy. Follow along in this Inkscape screen capture showing how to:
    1. Use OpenStreetMap to download your map data as an editable SVG file.
    2. Create specific dimensions to your map and poster / wall art.
    3. Modify the OpenStreetMap data inside of Inkscape.
    4. Clean up the map using Edit - Select Same tool in Inkscape
    5. Change your map to a high contrast grayscale image.
    6. Add custom selected pops of color.
    7. Crop and clip final map into the desired dimensions.
    My goal for this channel is to create a community where we can share graphic design skills, tips and shortcuts with a focus on using free or low cost software and tools available to everyone.

    Great tutorial! Getting the SVG from OpenStreet was really the key to being able to do what I wanted in Inkscape.

    Oh this is cool. I'm actually from the Western half of your state. Springfield. I'm working on a quilted wallhanging that includes Springfield's skyline. However, if I can figure out how to do my topstitching as a minimalist map like you just showed in that poster, that would be an awesome touch. Again, excellent video and I can't thank you enough.

  • @FernandoCanoG
    @FernandoCanoG Před 3 lety

    How can i export it from Inkscape so i can print it our? what are the recommended settings for print export? thanks!

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před 3 lety +2

      Great question. Once you have the map the way you like it, group everything. With the grouped map selected, choose Export to PNG Image from the FILE drop down menu. For settings, choose Export Area- Selection. The height width dimensions will depend on the shape of your map, but make sure you change the DPI setting to 300. If it takes forever to export or crashes, you'll have to scale down the map in Inkscape and try to Export again. I have had luck printing out maps that were 12MB as a PNG. Hope this helps!

    Hey Rickk, quick question, when i select with dragon box, i mean shift and left click, instead selecting the words only, its choosing everything behind it as well. Most probably its a basic option, but i could not manage to fix it. Do you have any idea ? Thank you from now.
    And I would love to see, ho would you pick a destination that you do not have any idea and choose a portion to create a minimalist map art. Somewhere very fantastic and hard to decide which portion of the map to use.
    All the Best

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před rokem

      I know what you're saying. Select boxes sometime behave in different ways than we'd expect. Can you try clicking off of everything first? Start with nothing selected. Then Shift and drag open the selection. Box around the the words only. If that doesn't work easily. Double click on the words themselves so you see the nodes. Select a few nodes and do Control A. That will grab all the nodes in that path. Then delete. Hope this helps!

    How would you draw lines within the roads to show directions or a map to take?

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před rokem +1

      What a great question. I'd use the Bezier Pen tool to create the route you want and using the Fill + Stroke menu, you can actually make the line dashed or dotted if that is the look that would work for the project. You can also set the start of the line to be an arrow by using the "markers" settings.

    • @Pickles1234
      @Pickles1234 Před rokem

      @@IronEchoDesignThanks! I've completed all the steps you've been through on the video, but the map area I want to use is larger than the 12 x 18 size I set my desk. Is there a was to scale down the full map whilst keeping the correct proportions?

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před rokem

      Nice work! Yes. You can group everything and select that new group. Holding control down while you grab a corner arrow from the selection box will keep the proportions the same when you scale the whole thing down. When you do it, does the line weight change? There is one more easy setting to adjust if that's an issue when scaling.

    im confused on how to use this for commercial use. There is a copy right section on the website, but it is confusing.

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před 2 lety

      I'll double check the website once we get power back from the local storms here in the Boston area. Basically, the map data is provided as an open source resource, but we should still credit OpenStreetMap. Are you looking to design a map to be included in a website or printing out for sale? You could add a footnote on the project that says: Map data provided by OpenStreetMap www.openstreetmap.org. Again, I'll check their page when power is back for the specific wording. Hope this helps!

    Dude! If you think YOU got ocean... I live in Honolulu. My laptop is drowning in ocean! LOL! Seriously, I chose a few blocks of downtown Honolulu and got the whole island surrounded by ocean. Something is off with their download system.
    The good news is that this was crashing my (4 year old?) Win10 HP All-in-One last night, but the map download and Inkscape 1.2.2 are running fine on my Win7 HP DV7 Pavilion.
    Somebody should make one of these maps with no labels so it has a red spot that says, "You are here". : )

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před rokem +1

      Haha! Honolulu definitely has an ocean around it. Glad Pavilion handled the file, and I too wish they'd make maps where we could turn off labels before exporting. Maybe some day.

    • @IronEchoDesign
      @IronEchoDesign  Před rokem

      I'm working on an update to this video. Clearing the ocean is too frustrating. On option is to zoom far out and click the ocean, and then Ungroup. You'll know you have the big ocean piece when the fill tab on the Fill and Stroke menu shows the blue color. Hope this helps.
