can't wait to watch the tear down repair and rebuild
Very helpful video. Looks like a lot of work, but surely worth it. 😁
Great video I appreciate it. I was trying to find difference in sounds between my pulleys and timing chain definitely didn’t want to pull that offf
Thanks for this video! I had a bad feeling about the KA24DE in my Xterra, it just sounded off so I stopped driving it. I saved up and got the parts cannon loaded up and got the valve cover and timing cover off yesterday, and sure enough there's just as much slop in my chain. Glad to see my suspicion to the change of how the motor sounds was warranted. Got a new chain and tensioners/guides, finishing up the head gasket first (I had an exhaust leak and oil leaks around cylinders 1 and 4).
Aside from being dirty/oil fouled, everything looks good. If I kept driving it I'm sure it would have lead to wear and damage, but as it sits the valve clearance looks good, the cam lobes look good, there's no evidence of rod knock or piston wear/damage...I think I done good for an abandoned $550 vehicle that just needed some TLC.
I had something like this too on my 2008 mustang 4.6L. It started as a ticking sound after a cold start that lasted several mins until the engine warmed up. Then became a ridiculously loud scraping / rattling sound when pushing and releasing the accelerator, especially when driving. Turns out the engine was leaking oil, probably from thinning due to very hot weather. Level was very low and there was not enough pressure to properly activate the timing belt tensioner. The sound went away after adding oil.
So you just added oil & that’s it ? It was the timing chain ? I have a 08 mustang gt too & having the exact same problem
@francosignal In that car, the timing belt tensioner is activated by oil pressure, if it's too low, the chain goes slack and makes all kinds of horrible noise. I was like 3 or 4 qt. low on oil because of a leak I didn't know about. I added more and the noise went away. I have to keep an eye on it though, and just keep adding when it gets low. The leak is on timing cover and I don't feel like fixing it any time soon.
This is exactly what my car was doing. It hadn't occurred to me to check the oil level because I'd never had a problem with using/losing oil before, and I had no warning lights or error codes.
Appreciate the help I got a 05 an was dealing with the same problems
Looking forward to the video…
So I hear this rattle noise when I turn the motor off. Possibly the same problem?
ahhh thanx. Was curious on how you would be able to tell if it was the chain based off of more than the noise. Now i feel stupid but glad i stumbled on your video lol. Check to see how much slack is in it 👌
It is more common to have some slack on the passenger side, but you should know if it’s excessive. Oil pressure helps in some case once it’s running but you could see how mine punched through the tensioner czcams.com/video/rqsWUZjDtnY/video.htmlsi=QzktyxQH5U2dAgmg
Hey Danny, love the channel! I have a 03 centennial GT with around 118,000 miles. Should I go ahead and replace my timing components as a precaution? Is the 4.6 2v known to have timing chain issues? Thanks In advance!
It seems the main issues for timing is like this with a broken guide or tensioner. I think it’s a good idea when you’re ready for it, but until you want to or hear it start making noise on startup or idle it will probably be fine
My 01 GT didn’t have a loose chain, but tensioner pushed thru the guide and was wearing on the chain. Found out by Blackstone analysis at 137k miles showing high aluminum content
Take a listen to my motorcycle engine and please tell me why the knocking is caused by thicker Castrol oil that can’t quite pressurize the tensioner?
The bike is new, all the parts are new and in good working order, so can’t it pressurize the tensioner?
Same thing happen in my Audi s4 2014 3.0 supercharger I thought it was the lifters I put sum oil Lucas just to verified and it didn’t do none to it like the sound was the same now I know it’s not the lifters I’m pretty sure it’s the timing chains
Is it worth replacing the chain on a light use daily driver? i know on ls motors, that you just let it eat.
I don’t think it’s necessary until you have a need to open it up.
Danny, do you know if it’s ok to run a terminator that has head tick? Is it that bad or more like you’ll fix it when you get around to it? Mine has 86k miles with head tick
If it is for sure head tick it won’t hurt anything. Scott Hoag who helped develop the mach 1 and created MRT performance parts took a head tick engine and ran it as hard as he could as he tracked the car and never had any problems.
Just my opinion
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Well that eases my concern, thank you for the info.
Been thoroughly going through my 05 grand marquis ultimate. I'm not sure if it needs tensioners yet or not. If I have someone else start it while I'm standing in front of the engine I can hear a slight rattle for a short period following a cold start. But that's the symptoms in totality. Might choose the easier valve cover to remove and take a peek. It's so clean I'd hate to risk it jumping time just because I needed a louder symptom to be sure.
It is typical to have a rattle until oil pressure builds when the tensioners are getting weak. But once it’s running it should be fine. One day it will be good to replace, just keep listening for it to get worse
@dannyjohnsonsgarage thanks for the input. The car has a PO462 code for fuel level sensor circuit high but the gauge reads accurately. Also get minor whiffs of fuel whole driving but not finding a leak. Don't have time to take the tank down so it'll go to a shop to track down that issue. While it's there I requested they take a listen to the engine. But it runs great and like you said it's only for a moment. Opened the fuel filler and it looks brand new inside so the oil has been kept up with its whole life too
Had an insanely loud rattling sound under the intake, suggestions?
I got the same issue only in a cold start ticking noise last to 5 sec then it goes normally & as my experience this could be the timing chain & their equipment or it could be one of those cylinder valves .. when it comes to timing belt that’s a different issue so that’s it I hope it will help you all !💫
Did you ever find out what the issue was ?
Man I replaced the set and still had noise, pretty sure I have rod knock. I also put the gaskets on the tensioners which I later found out after it was all put together that you’re not supposed to. Either way idc and im driving her till she blows. Some lucas and prayers will be used.
2 years later , is she still going ???
Nice video if anyone hears a controled rattle like this stop driving and get some money together to fix the timing chain it’s gonna be as much as 2,500
I have a walkthrough to save money, but it is a lot of work
czcams.com/video/rqsWUZjDtnY/video.htmlsi=2Eq2mY0dg3yZfuDQ
So you have to take the engine out completely to replace? What would you charge a shop to do that if so? Im trying to make sure im not scammed/upcharged
The engine does not need to come out. I have a full walkthrough czcams.com/video/rqsWUZjDtnY/video.html
How many miles on the car?I have learned a lot from your channel.Thank you for the helpful content Danny!
200,000 but the engine is from a 2004 and it’s a 2001 so somewhere along the way it got a new engine
Should an engine with 149,000 miles on it have timing issues. It is a 2004 Ford Explorer. I've had the vehicle for 3 yrs. It has a small ticking noise not really loud. Has low miles 149,000. Has a lot of new parts. Don't want to get rid of the vehicle if I don't have too
Man that's what my 4.0 explorer noise it was making the truck gave out :(
I'd believe it. Sorry to hear that.
Does timing chain misfire on code p0301???Because this guy told me a bad timing chain doesn't give a code
It would be cylinder misfire, so more likely a spark plug, coil pack or even bad 02 sensor. You generally won’t get a code for a loose chain and if it was loose enough to jump teeth it would likely bend a valve
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage oh ok thanks you for the info.Omg I'm tires of mechanics trying to play games with the coils
Depending on if u hear the chain slapping it would
My 2006 was making that same noise then one month later it started to rattle the poof car shut off and won’t start anymore? Also If my timing chain popped off or broke will it need new valves? Some say no and others say yes? Pls and thank you
If the timing chain did in fact break or come off entirely, it is likely it bent some valves. If that is the case, it may be more cost effective to drop in a replacement engine. You won’t know how bad the damage is until you tear it down. I’d remove the cam cover and see what it looks like
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage thank you for responding I will be tearing it down this weekend
Did the noise go away with some RPM if you revd it
This one did not because the tensioner had poked through the guide arm and was rubbing on the chain. Sometimes the noise will go away if the tensioner is weak and oil pressure helps it firm up
i have a 05 p71. i hear the same thing. i think its my timing chain. something is clicking in there
For that year you might also look at the cam phaser
On my 4v, I have a noise I only hear at 2k rpm. Don't hear it before and I don't hear it after
I have a 12 mustang with the same noise. Did you ever find out about it?
My 2000 mustang gt has the same noise but whe it warms noise goes away 😢
Probably weak tensioners that rely on oil pressure
@@dannyjohnsonsgaragethank you I’ll I’ll replace them this weekend
Does that noise go away?
After you repair it
