- This 2009 honda pilot 3.5 v6 has a loud ticking, knocking, rattle type noise coming from the engine. these engines have a hydraulic fluid filled timing belt tensioner, and when they fail or start to fail, this noise will start to happen. hope this video helps. thank you for watching FixItPhillip

Man finally a person who give torque spec and uses torque wrench definitely a good mechanic
4:16 love that shop banter in the back ground🤣
Haha
Brings me back home haha love it 🎉
Thank you this was the first video that showed the steps to take the timing belt tensioner off.
This is a good video... I wanted to see if anyone else has actually started the car with the covers off but crank pulley on like this to verify where the noise is coming from... Now I'll feel better about doing it thanks man
Thanks for this information. My 2008 Honda Accord EX (3.5 V6) has had a knocking sound for the past two years. I just dropped it off at an engine shop today.
Did it fix the rattling?
2007 pilot here. Has a chattering noise when accelerating when beginning to drive up to 15 to 20 mph then the noise goes away. Will Not Duplicate the same sound while driving past 20 mph or faster. Great video thank you. Will share with mechanic.
I have something similar on my tl. Did you find out what it was?
One mechanic said it is probably the heat shield from the catalytic converter. Another mechanic said it is probably something from the axle. So, I have not received an accurate diagnosis.
Thank you for this. My 2006 Honda accord 3.0 is doing this exact same thing. I have ordered the parts and booked it in. Great video 👊👍
That's the noise I've been hearing. Thank you.
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing
Sounds like water pump is bad, definitely a bearing noise from one the timing belt components, cool video
Prob idler bearings
Thanks for sharing,
Great information
Dude this is an excellent video
Thank you bro
Thanks, jack!
my 15 RDX makes this noise, now I know. Thanks!
They going ham in tha background🤣🤣🤣💀
I've got a customers 07 MDX I finally pulled into my bay and it was hard to keep running, issue was obvious so not being too far from my bay I lightly limped it in. It ran much more rough then the unit in video. Should I be concerned about possible internal damage? I understand it's most uncertain not knowing for sure without putting eyes on it. It's been close to a decade since Ive dealt with these engines so trying to refresh.
What's the brand of the new tensioner you installed?
Quick diagnosis.
Thank you
Nice job
Thank you
I got a new one not too long ago and it kinda making a chattering noise right now but I felt the tensioner and it didn’t vibrate bad imo. So I looked at the drive belt tensioner and the bottom pulley is hard to turn compared to the upper pulley. So I think that may be causing that metal chatter for me?
Bless you Philip, I have that same type of sound coming from my 2017 Ridgeline sports. Do you recommend me to replace the T Belt also while at that point ( 150,000) miles plus. Can I do it myself with the right tools or do you have a diy video on replacement of the T Belt.
Like most elderly Americans I'm on a budget. I do have some mechanical knowledge skill to do small repairs.
Yes at that milage yes i would replace the timing belt (also check the water pump and pulleys). If you do the job yourself do allot of research of the procedure. The main thing you need to make sure is that your timing marks are lined up properly. Because this is a interference engine.
Hi there, I'm hearing a similar ish ticking/knocking noise from the engine bay of my 03 CL Type S and it also has a rough start up that just started today. However, when I get the car above 2k rpm, the knocking completely goes away. Do you think it's the tensioner itself that's causing the issue?
Dude thanks for the video, however, as a diy’r I felt pretty good about the fix until you got to the end where you needed to replace the timing cover and crank pulley! I think you need a special crank bolt socket? Maybe if you would give a heads up on details like special tools or disassembly. Thanks anyway, I’ll do further research and see what I need to do as far as getting to the tensioner.
you don’t need a special socket, 36mm w a strong impact gets it off
This can be done without removthe timing cover.
@@matthewvalentine3549can you point me to a video of this method? Can’t seem to locate and having the same issue.
I changed the timing belt and did a few clockwise turns and noticed that the alignment is about 1-2 teeths off.. Is this normal? I heard that it had to turn 281 times before it gets aligned again.. is that true? No error code, no engine code either.. Just the sound of the engine seems off a bit.. and a very very faint knocking I hear ..
I think that tensioner went out today while driving. Causing me to be stranded throwing up a camshaft postion sensor a. It made that same noise for some time. Till today. Didn't want to turn on.
Awesome video. Thank you 🙏
I finally got the crank bolt to break loose finally I can finish this project
@fixitphillip would it cause the vehicle to lose power also?
Thank you for the video. I had a question. After pulling that out what did you do to the belt? I saw it move. Is that some adjustment you need to do?
Wanna see this response
@@user-rj3vw4vo1d same
sounds the same to me... I still here a knocking noise... I was a little scared also that the belt would slip and throw the timing belt off.
I have 2 hondas with the ticking noise, 16 Odyssey and 15 Accord V6 both with 85k miles. On both of them though they only tick when the engines cold. Would that be the same thing?
I have the exact same noise on my 2013 Honda pilot. I also replaced the timing belt about 12,000 miles ago. I took it to mechanic and he tells me it's the timing belt. The tensioner was not replaced only timing belt. I have a feeling they are trying to scam me as they are trying to charge me $1800 when I already fixed it for $1200 in another city. Since it's the exact same noise i think I'm going to take my chances and just have someone replace the tensioner and hopefully the noise gets fixed.
Always replace the entire system when doing a timing belt job. The price will be high because of how long it takes to get to the parts
You might be able to swap just the tensioner yourself without replacing anything else look on CZcams. There's a way to do it without taking any of the timing covers or anything off
@@jwat8400 he’s already replaced it 12k miles ago. Pointless to buy another kit when all he needs is a tensioner
@@williamwood6863 Yes. However I was saying that for the future, so he wouldn't have to worry about something in the same system so soon.
Thanks for the video
Have you used the Aisin brand for a timing bet kit if so whats be your experience with them
I have a timing belt job coming up on my to do list and been looking for information/people experience with the Aisin brand kit
I have had good luck with using aisin timing belt/water pump kits on toyotas since allot of toyotas use aisin from factory anyway, I don't believe I have used a aisin kit for a honda yet, but on toyotas I haven't had an issue with aisin's hydraulic tensioners/ pulleys/ or water pumps.
@@FixItPhillip ok thank you for feedback the provided mishiboshi timing belt is a quality part as well or would a Bando brand timing belt be better ?
Thanks for this detailed video. How long does this tensioner usually last? I have a 2019 Odyssey with 48K miles, and dealership mentioned tensioner is leaking..
Usually 60 to 100k miles. If it's leaking have new timing kit installed asap
Similar problem here. Did you get the timing belt and everything replaced?
No, I didn't, At 60K miles now. Going to get some recalls done soon, May be will check the tensioner again. Its such a pain we cant trust these stealerships at all. I never saw any proof other than them just saying its leaking
Can you replace the tensioner without redoing the timing
Haha!. The back ground conversations.
does that also cause the engine to vibrate? I was on the way to work, my car stall. Shortly after that noise came up
Just a question, when you release the cam belt tensioner with no pressure on the belt, were you not afraid the cams gears might jump and skip teeth?
You just have to be careful. I had to do it 1 handed because the camera was shoved in there lol. It would be safer to use 2 hands so you can manually hold/push the tensioner pulley against the belt so there's minimal slack.
Ive Never designed a Motor or a tensioner for that matter …….. but why not have a serious spring push this vs hydraulic powered piston that can leak!!!!
I have a d21 hardbody & all it’s timing guide wear is due to a faulty oil pressure powered timing tensioner
Someone needs to make a spring loaded version of THIS
Well crap. 06 Ridgeline sounds like that on cold starts. Sound goes away after warm up. Had the engine swapped for a blow head gasket. Shoo that did the work said they replaced the timing belt, but im not to so sure they did. Looks like im going to have to bench it until I can afford to take it to the shop.
That hostile work environment tho 😂
Bro lol. There's some crazy people. Hard to make a video sometimes lol
Trust me, I know! 😂😂 thanks so much for the video, exactly what I needed.
Hey brother I’m in the middle of this job DIY. I’ve been watching this video and I’m curious does it need to be too dead center before I remove the timing tensioner? Please get back with me thanks
Email me your phone number fixitphillip88@gmail.com
Do you need to remove harmonic balancer/crank pulley to do this job or just the timing cover?
Yes serpentine belt. Crank pulley. Then timing cover
@FixItPhillip thank you for the fast response 🙏 💯
06 accord here 135k. My sound is alot lighter. Only occurs when it's a cold start and below 50* the noise goes away after warm up. Sounds like a loud injector or lifter idk.
06 accord with 145k. Same noise on cold starts and goes away when warm. I'm fairly certain mine is the t belt tensioner. I work at a dealership and asked a few seasoned techs. They said to be certain, tear it down and start to verify noise.
Is it common for the knocking to go away after the car has warmed up. Mine seems to go away. It’s also worse on cold mornings, but again goes away after warm up.
Yea
Yea
Yea
Wish he would answer. Jesus christ.
My car makes that sound only in the morning too lol..
A lot of the 4-cylinder cars don't have timing belts. However, the six cylinders they put them in because their luxury cars. So they found a way to screw people over. At least timing chains were better.
T belts are elastic and can stretch but then go back to their original length/size. Also, no oil lubrication required. Yes the 100k replacements seem like a pain but I think it's worth it. Timing chains stretch over time due to wear and tear, lack of oil changes and they will not go back to original length and cause issues. Elastic vs plastic. Also, timing covers are very involved to remove. Not to mention the huge involvement of chain replacements. Just ask a Ford tech about phaser replacements. That being said, if the chain system is designed well and lasts the life of the car (maintained), then it's a great timing set up to have.
At first i was like that seems simlle enough.. then i saw all the stuff u had to put back at the end.
The j series 3.7 for Acura TL also has thus ticking sound. What's the best way to determine if this is the case or if it is a worn rocker and cam?
Does Honda j-motor have a cam Love dedicated to power the piston?
Jack up the front of your vehicle take the passenger side tire off, start the engine and carefully feel the timing belt tensioner that sticks out. If it's vibrating it's that
Did this trip the knock sensor a p0327 code? My cousin thinks his is rod knock but I think this is the problem.
This vehicle didn't trip that code. But maybe it's possible.
Did you remove the crankshaft pulley to remove timing cover?
Yes
@@FixItPhillip thanks! I figured it out earlier when I noticed that the bottom two bolts for lower timing cover is behind crankshaft pulley.
I have a 2016 pilot, when it had 88k on it it was making this noise. It has 89k on it now and it’s not making the noise anymore? What should I do?
I think it’s only when engine cold. For example mine isn’t doing in summer months at start up but did winter. I live in California so not even that cold or hot.
My 2019 3.5 passport makes a ticking sound when under load, accelerating 0-10 mph. Could it be timing belt tensioner? Only 20k miles, been hearing it since 10k miles.
That's a newer engine design. And if I'm not mistaken has direct injection (high pressure fuel injectors) which can be a louder tick noise especially under load
I have a similar knocking in the engine bar near my timing chain area 2012 Honda Accord EXL, but it only does it sometimes when I crank the car first thing in the morning, when it's cold and then once it's warm, the noise goes away. Is that a symptom of timing chain or tensioner?
V6 version? If so, possibly the belt. 4 cyc has a chain so that's unlikely to be it - chain issues are rare on the 4 cyc assuming proper oil change. Could always be the serpentine belt/belt tensioner but thats easy enough to check.
@@JPrez-io6qj yes v6, I had a couple mechanics look at it, they said the timing belt sounds fine, once it's warm, but in the morning it knocks a bit hard but only 45° and below, it'll last 2 to 3 minutes and gradually go away, but when it's 50° or higher there is no noise or knocking.
@@ajrodriguez1254 As a former tech, I'd lean towards one of three items (I can't obviously hear it, but maybe you should upload a video of it?) - but timing belt tensioner, check to see if its wet/listen with a stethoscope, replace. Other areas for cold engine noise/knock is oil pressure/oil delivery - depending on year - vtec solenoid near oil filter has screens that clog and/or valve chatter valve clearance issues. The 3.7s were known for oil delivery issues but those engines were pretty rare.
@@JPrez-io6qj okay, I'll add a video and tag you in it or post the link here, I'm leaning towards tensioner, my friend and I actually changed the VVT Solenoid spool valve due to it leaking onto the alternator, and changed the valve cover gaskets, and all that.
@@JPrez-io6qj czcams.com/users/shortsnf3GZhPNR2Q?feature=share
Why does the noise go away after it’s warmed up? I would think if it’s the tensioner it would always make the noise.
How much would you charge someone to change the tension belt?
Pls I have sceaina is sounds like noking I need advice sir
My 2006 Acura TL with the 3.2l is making the same exact noise but I can't find the hydrolic tensioner part anywhere just the whole tensioner. Anyone know part number or is this only an issue on the 3.5? It sounds identical though
On my 2016 acura rdx i have the same exact noise no codes should i just order the new tensioner & adjuster
What sis you end up doing? Because same happening over here.
2012 V6 Pilot recently started making a clunking noise (different noise than this one) for 1-2 seconds at start up, usually when cool or cold. Quits immediately… Any ideas? How best to check serpentine tensioner?
Check the vtc actuator camshaft those Hondas they have a recall it makes a grinding noise at the startup gets worse on cold 🥶 starts
If its just the tensioner..do I have to turn the engine? Or was it that you was just testing it?
That was just me testing it. Showing what it sounds like before and after
@@FixItPhillip im sorry..what I meant was..after you put in the new part..I saw that you turned the crank..do I have to do that too?
I would. I turned it clickwise. Just to make sure all slack is taken up before you crank it. So there's no risk of it jumping teeth
@@FixItPhillip ok got it..thank you
Both bolts for the tensioner out outside the black cover ,, why take all the other stuff off ? Can it be done without taking all the other stuff off?
2008 Honda Accord v6
To release the new tensioner lock pin, also to show where they leak from and how they chatter against the tensioner pulley. Also I've seen them chatter so much it'll damage the tensioner pulley side and need to be replaced as well
@@FixItPhillip Thank you!
Would a worn drive belt make a engine overheat?
The water pump on this engine is driven by the timing belt. Unless the water pump is seized it won't cause it to overheat. And it if it was seized it would burn up/break the belt quickly
Is it necessary to do the procedure at minute 5:45? Please answering 😊
I have the same noise but mine is a 2008 3.5 v6 Honda accord and my tensioner is the spring one instead of the hydraulic one. Could it still be the tensioner ?
I doubt it. This issue I showed pertains to the hydraulic style tensioners
@@FixItPhillip Olay thank you , I really don’t know what the problem could be then. I don’t wanna end up buying an engine
Many people gets confused
Hydraulic tensioner
Timing belt tensioner
You have to know which one was gone bad.
When removing the tensioner, is there any risk of asking putting anything out of time?
There shouldn’t, just don’t move the belt much
Can this cause alternator to not charge properly , sounds stupid but I’ve been through 3 alternators now
No
Perhaps the serpentine belt?
Did you replace belt
No. It had been already replaced less than 10k miles ago
Sometimes I don’t know if blame the owner or the car maker for some vehicle issues, my wife has an ‘13 Acura RDX , V6 3.5L ,140k still waiting for something to break down , just maintenance, no problems whatsoever 🤷♂️
Timing belt recommended change interval 100k.
@@drakec.9327 I did it myself using genuine Honda parts (“Aisin” timing kit)
09 accord EXL V6 same noise
What did you do at the end?
Timing belt outer cover
Must take off serpentine belt crank pulley and serpentine belt tensioner
Whats the abátete that this job go for? Just so I won’t get ripped off?
The question is why are they failing. Someone needs to open it up and determine why.
Can this happen on a d15b ?
No
I heard the timing belt pulley tensioner bearing is a little dry sound you should just change everything timing belt kit so engine last another 100K miles or more. Next time buy a car with timing chain.
But does this cause the engine to die
If the timing belt gets loose it can jump out of timing yes it can die. And can also cause valve damage
Is it me or does it still sound loud?
It's hard to tell the difference with the camera microphone. But yes in real life it's wayyy quieter
Sounds like the Idler pulley for the T-Belt may have a bad bearing also.
It sounds like it on the video but it's just the microphone of the camera lol
Whats the part number?
I would punch in your vin # on a honda dealer parts website just so you can see the exact part # for your vehicle. Or call the dealer and ask them they should give it to you
Might as well do the entire timing job, you're already there
True. But the t belt and water pump was already done on this one super recent. Just had a tensioner failure. But yes if it's due do it all
Maybe customer didn’t have money for entire timing belt job just enough for diagnostic and repair parts and extra labor was prob out his budget after he diagnosed to problem
Not completely informative, fail to mention you need to remove the shield and crankshaft pulley not an easy job if you don't have the proper tools.
Do you have to take off crank pulley
Yes
