Engine knock & rattle: accessory belt pulleys or engine internals?

  • After replacing the accessory belt and idler/tensioner pulleys, this Ford Duratec HE developed an annoying knock or rattle under certain revs and loads. It's difficult to tell by ear whether a knock is coming from within the engine, or if it's maybe a bad pulley.
    You can disconnect the belt from the crankshaft and run the engine safely for a short time, to identify if the engine is making the noise without the belt and pulleys being turned.

    Hi! Nice video. I have a v70 2.0f with the same engine as your car. After i changed tensioner and belt since it flapped a loud noise started to creep in becoming louder and more frequent for every week. It sounds like it’s coming from the alternator.. It can’t be a bad tensioner since I replaced it just a few months ago. Will check it out today.

    I was getting this noise for sometime.. thinking it was cam chain, valves, taps, fuel pump pressure, top end knock, oil pressure. Got the belt changed after 137k miles! (It lasted but was on the way out) now have a bigger nosie when bonnet up. I guess it's a pulley, on it way out. As reving the engine sounds perfect! Does the aux belt, always go at one speed or go fast when underload? As I have a noise and would like to think it's a pulley, gearbox on its way out. Drives fine and pulls great. Just noise's at 140k on a 2L duratec ST150

  • @BingBingEnterprises
    @BingBingEnterprises Před rokem +2

    Had a knocking sound at around 2500 or 3000 rpm and sometimes at idle. Did some checks on the engine and couldn’t really find anything out of the ordinary apart from my worn out pas pump (but I already knew about that one) one morning I was letting my car warm up and I was standing outside listening and the sound seemed to be coming from under the car so because it was only warm not hot I held my exhaust tip and the noise disappeared, let go again and I heard the noise. Turned out that it was just my exhaust rattling cause my exhaust hangers I’m guessing are about as old as the car and have never been changed. Stuck some new ones on and haven’t heard the sound since so keep in mind that the noises you hear aren’t always directly related to your engine

    you can also use a wooden dowel metal vibrates too much so you can use a wooden dowel put it on the part you think the noise is coming from make sure not to put it on parts that are rotating this works really good because metal vibrates too much and the wood does not vibrate very much and will give you a true or sound to find out engine noise also the man in the video is correct about taking the belt off to see if your getting engine noise somewhere else like in the motor itself sometimes it is necessary when working on a car trying to figure out what engine noise is coming from sometimes it is a good idea to cut the car on jack stands to eliminate road noise I hope this information that I gave you about the wooden dowel will help you locating noises Within the motor or exterior parts of your vehicle including transmission differentials Drive axles bearing noises in the lower part of the motor and upper part of the motor and valve covers additional accessories you're able to check with the wooden dowel like the alternator the water pump air conditioning power steering pump and pulleys Honda motor garters and other types of motors the Peace of wood dowel rod works very well

    I had a weird one which took a while to isolate. It was a loud rattle at idle which turned out to be the spring inside the tensioner. I’ve subsequently heard it on another car so could be fairly common on the duratec. Tricky as all the bearings were fine and had me thinking it might be the cam chain at one point.

    I kept having problems with harmonic balancer pulley. Cheaply made. The noise was shocking but I agree with taking the belt off. I ran it with it off and was so much worse cos it wasn't under tension so was vibrating more. It's a quick east check for the harmonic wheel aka crank shaft wheel too. Also never buy cheap and try and get a genuine part. I've been through 3 so far.

      If you can move a pulley by hand with belt tension still on it, I'd say it's definitely going to be making some sort of noise. They're cheap, replace it and see what remains.

    My car has been starting to sound something like this i guess and my brother said it might be rod knock but the other day when i went to go clean the interior i turned it on to see if it did but its not to loud and when i pressed the pedal i only went up maybe 100rpms and then the noise went away and it sounded normal and later when i finished cleaning my car i turned it back on and went up to 2000rpms and i could hear it a little more but going to higher rpms it sounds like it goes away, also the engine feels like it shakes a little bit, could it be rod knock? Or can the timing belt tensioner cause the shake too?

Can't wait for the next vid :) and since you already changed the power steering pump, the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley, there is only one bearing left that MIGHT give off funny noises. The alternator pulley, that has a one way bearing on it, but i hope all gets fixed with the waterpump. Cheers

    @thesetruths1404 Před 2 lety

    Nice. Liked that. I'm looking for help with this problem. Writeup below I've used on Nissan forums. I'm thinking my issue may be a failed hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Any ideas or experience you have is greatly appreciated!
    Hello all! This is my first Nissan Pathfinder. I have always wanted one since the late 1990s. It's a 1998 SE 3.3L, automatic transmission, 167,000 miles on it. I got it at an estate sale for $2,000.
    It has a loud knock or tap that happens part-time and so far it's not been resolved. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could point me to anything to check next, or describe if you had similar problems with yours. I've run the motor minimally...only to troubleshoot. Here's what it does and what I've done:
    1. When it's first started, it knocks for less than 1 second and then gets entirely quiet. I hear maybe 2 knocks when it first starts. Then, when the motor is accelerated to 2000 RPMs it begins to knock and it keeps knocking until 3000ish RPMs. It increases in speed as the RPMs increase. If I let off the accelerator it stops knocking. When it's higher than 3,000 RPM it goes away. So it's in this midrange RPM the knock is present. It does this sitting still, or driving it.
    The rig was very sheltered it's whole life from what I can tell. It was driven lightly by an elderly lady. It's in immaculate condition, inside and out. Garaged. Paint and interior is perfect.
    Motor starts, idles and runs great other than the knock.
    Oil is full. I dropped the oil pan and checked the main and rod bearings. There was not any play. I changed them anyways. Noise persisted. There was some material in the pan's bottom, about 1/3 tablespoon (1 teaspoon) of what seemed to be fine wear material. Which I would think is normal for 167,000 miles.
    2. It has a P1400 error code, for the EGR solenoid. I have not chased that yet. I don't find where this would cause a knock though.
    3. The transmission fluid is 1 to 2 quarts low (based on my guess from stick reading), but the noise does not seem to be coming from the transmission, and the vehicle moves and drives fine. No slippage.
    What could be causing this part-time knock?
    Hydraulic lifters? Timing belt slap? Harmonic balancer? Cracked flexplate? The noise seems too loud to be the lifters, and doesn't do it at low RPMs like lifters usually do.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      @@diegonavyhotmail sorry, "looks" like the same. changed from cheap aftermarket tensioner to OEM, the tensioner still vibrates. The old tensioner had bad bearings but it was solid, didn't vibrate. Google told me that some vibration is normal, but I really couldn't tell what normal or what not. The belt doesn't looks like it slacks under load when the AC is on. It doesn't make any funny noises but I just couldn't stop thinking about it. Video recording couldn't show the vibration probably because of the frame rate.
      Which means that any of the pulley is causing the vibration or it was an out of spec aftermarket belt.
      Car guy told it could probably be the water pump - which is plausible because I replaced the radiator last year. I think I'll try changing the belt with OEM first. The aftermarket belt was more expensive. It was a mistake to buy any aftermarket parts that attaches to your engine.

    He told me to go to his "friend" that's a engine builder /fixer that so happens to have the same engine in storage that I have, he said it's internal... so quoted me $4500 and mentioned he had the same engine I can have for $5500 (he got for free because someone gave him the engine to put new cams in and 5 years later never asked for it back)....
