As some of you already know the engine on my Mustang started making a knocking sound earlier this year at about 120k miles. I purchased a replacement used engine with 40k miles on it as the repair of my existing engine would be very difficult.
I'm finally starting the process of installing the replacement engine but wanted to share what it sounded like currently.
After doing a bunch of research I'm almost certain that it has a broken timing chain cassette. The 4.0L V6 is not an interference engine so the valves should all be fine but the repair is a lot of work and requires that the engine be pulled either way.

I just want to say this isnt as hard as it seems to fix, it is infact not an interferenceengine, mine is from 2003. take off the valve covers and intake. (Requires removing alternator) check the chains and guides. The tensioners can be accessed without doing all this. The drivers side goes into the head from the bumperside of the engine and it looks like a cylinder sticking out of the head.
On the passenger side it will be on the back side of the engine facing the wheel well and will look like a really thin hex.
You can remove these with either a 23 or 24mm socket (cant remember) and shove new ones in. If that doesnt work you may have to drop the transmission to access the rear jackshaft sprocket and the front jack shaft sprocket and replace those guides. Not too hard. If anyone is struggling to find help with this. I will send you all the youtube links i used to help me figure it out. And it's not that hard to time it aswell. Took me 2 attempts and i was driving it about 20 minutes ago. Just send me a message on instagram @Chrissleonaard, you dont even have to follow me. I'm really just trying to help you folks out
Your engine is ohv Essex, completely different engine than the one in this video, which is a SOHC Cologne
@@ChrisBrown-pz2gu no mine is a 4.0 v6 single over head cam with electronic fuel injection. Central accessory shaft that connects to both of the camshafts via chains, camshafts that are placed over the head of each bank of the engine. The camshafts are responsible for opening and closing valves underneath the camshafts and above the combustion chambers. 0 pushrods 100 more milliliters than the largest essex engine.
@@xXLileastXx is your car a Mustang?
Thanks, i have one making a cracking sound from time to time.
The 4.0L OHV is a non interference engine. The 4.0L OHC, what’s shown in the video, is an interference engine. One problem that comes prolonged timing chain failure in the SOHC is bent valves. The only way to get bent valves are from the piston striking the valve. Therefore, the 4.0L OHC is an interference engine.
four years later an this video helped me diagnose my problem. Still taking it to a mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem, but it gave me an answer, even if i didn't want to hear it. Thanks for the video!
once the motor is pulled, you need to fix the timing chains, once fixed you can sell that motor to someone who already jumped and killed theirs. The key is fix it before it jumps time. If you do this you can recoup the money you spent on the 'new' motor
A lot of your videos do not pertain to me but it is great that you share little things that it informative to an might help them. I think it is great. Keep up the good work. I would like a step by step processes for installing a whole house generator. I would find that very informative.
Thanks for the encouragement! I do struggle with knowing how to best build our community when my videos cover such a broad range of topics. I realize that a lot of them don't apply to everyone so it makes it difficult to serve everyone well. I am working towards the whole house generator project so that will be upcoming! Thanks for your feedback. It's super helpful.
@@BenjaminSahlstrom did you get the motor in???
very nice explanation
My 2014 doing this but wayyy lower …. Saving for a scatpack in Jan … so gotta maintain it😔😔
How many miles were on the engine?
My 2006 mustang 4.0l timing chain broke off and doesn’t have compression and idk if it skipped time
my 2006 mustang has 235600 miles, had it 14 yrs. took very good care of it, no major problems until now, started it up tonight and got the same rattle in my engine. still running smooth, good oil pressure, just sounds awful. this just happened to be the best car i have owned and i am 63 yrs. old. will see what happens with it, don't know yet.
I have an 05 with 192k miles..had it for 9 years....never gave me any serious problems...and if it does
I'll repair it. She's a keeper
I could be wrong but it sounds like the timing chain is pretty loose which could throw it out of time like a clock eventually the engine will be affected if not fixed pretty quickly as soon as you hear that noise id suggest getting it checked even if its just for a brief moment you can stop the problem before it becomes worse 🙏🏽
The 4.0 SOHC actually IS an interference engine!
Do you know the name of the part that goes mounted on the left side of the intake manifold? OK you are standing in front of the car and you can see the throttle body on the left side of the manifold there is a mountain area. Do you know the name of the part that goes on there?
That's your electronic throttle control module
Thanks man. This is exactly what mine just started doing yesterday. Quoted repair cost was: $4,300, New engine install cost $6,900. Needless to say, this sucks.
bro i see 305 HP 3.7L motors and trans for under 1000 on ebay, just slap one of those in your s197 mustang lol it actually might be cheaper than repairing an older 4.0. either way they have to pull the entire engine if its out of time
@Joey Binz I found a mechanic whose going to do the work for about $1,400. Motorcraft timing chain kits were about $690 from the Ford dealer.
wow too dam much my v6 is at 100,000 miles and still ok hopefully i can pull 25,000 more miles before i face this problem.
@@codydawson7904 Yeah man, she only has 115K miles. But she's running like a champ again... even better and more quiet than before. I had them also change spark plugs, all the gaskets and seals while the engine was out for a couple hundred bucks more.
@@garysanchez4123 yeah I do have to replace my spark plugs cuz they are due ,but I'm not super worried about the timing chain braking, what I am worried about is the plastic pieces guiding it, that being said IV never did anything to the motor and like what you said she runs like a champ ( man once told me if it ain't broke don't fix it lol )
Correct this is not a interference engine( Fortunately, the 4.0L SOHC is not an interference engine so a timing chain failure won't bend the valves. ... You'll also need a special tool kit (Ford or aftermarket) to hold the cams and tension the timing chains, and to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while you're doing the cam drives.)
What if the chain breaks off? Will the valve be bent?
This is an interference engine. You cited that from an article that is incorrect. The 4.0L OHV is a non interference, the 4.0L SOHC is an interference engine. Timing chain failure bad enough on the 4.0L SOHC can cause valve strikes on the piston and bent valves. Only way that happens is with an interference engine.
Nope you are wrong don't tell people that. Because if it jumps time it will destroy the vakves
So you need a new engine if the timing belt goes wrong I’m confused?
The timing chain is in the rear of the 4.0 V6 and you basically have to pull the engine if you want it to be easy
Yo I also have a 2006 mustang and it kinda makes that that sound but more of a knocking sound but and makes that sound when the engine starts/is warm ,on a cold start it doesn’t make that sound
What was the issue? Having the same on my 07
TIMING BELT is staying on for a few more years. I talked to the dealer I bought it from and they said if it ain't broke, don't.
How long will it stay. When i cold start the car squeeking sound comes for few minutes then fine. Do i need new timming belt?
Bet that dealer was talking out his ass when he said timing belt these have chains Lol
If it brakes your car isn’t going to be running and if it’s a interference engine even worse
+timothydempsey7844 There is no timing belt you idiot, it's a chain. If that chain breaks, say goodbye to your engine since it's an interference-design.
Too funny. Just happened to my mustang and it's the exact same colour.
happened to me yesterday in my o6 v6 and same color also
My 4.0 06 mustang just started making that sound at 234k miles 🤦♂️
My 2006 Ford Mustang sounds just like that. Everyone is telling me to junk it. I know I am being emotional but I don't want to let it go. How much did that engine cost? What would you charge to do the same to my car?😢
Dude I'm sorry. That really sucks. New engine was $1,600 for one with 44k miles on it. You can get them cheaper than that but I bought one with lower miles. Where are you located? I'm in Minnesota and probably not close by. Anyway, I think you should fix it! Drop a different engine in and you'll be good to go for a long time to come. My mechanic said he would drop in an engine for around $600 - $800 but I decided to drop it in myself since I've always wanted to drop in an engine. How many miles on your Mustang?
Worst part of replacing the engine in these 4.0 equipped vehicles is that you'll end up doing it twice. After the 2nd time you'll get rid of it.
I have this mustang. My engine sound waaay more throaty than that! I came onto this video to hear how it sounds when the timing is off. That IS NOT timing off sound! And why is he changing the engine? I think I missed something. Mine has 90k miles and doesn't sound like that!
Helped a friend do his timing chain on a v6 4.0 ford. What a damned mess and pain in the ace. Stupid design all around. My daughter has an 08 mustang. Its getting sent down the road before this has to be done.
Damn
YES that the ONLY reason why i dont like ford
Can somebody please tell me how many miles you can. Expect a timing chain failure on a 4.0 Mustang V6 05
235000 mine just started making that noise 🫤
You’ll wind up having the same problem with the new engine too. Very common problem on this model
Crap we have 2006 mustang V6 same sound...damn it
My current mid life crisis is to change my timing change or not to change my timing chain which has 303,000 miles on it. The car has been a great car. I am in a position to hardly ever drive it any more. From the first tank of gas it has always had the best of everything. I am maybe going to get 100,000 more miles out of that engine and hope to have the toughest timing chain in automobile history. If this comment gets through, i would appreciate your feedback.
I’m at 160,000miles only clacks at startup and smooths out after warming it up, idk what to do either. It’s depressing.
and i was worried about 100k ... damm guys . what ended up happening?
Yea let us know the outcome if anyone ever changes theirs.
@@jimmybob562mine does the same thing... only at startups
Wow 303,000 miles what model car do u have?
Sounds fine. I wouldn't do a thing.
😭😭😭
Ford explorer with bad timing chain
Mine took a shit at 140k miles....
Sounds exactly the same
I just don’t rly think it’s worth fixing up
These cars have a lot of issues I’m just not up for it anymore. Not to mention i had to replace the thermal stat housing 3x already bc Ford for some reason thought it was a good idea to make it out of 2 pieces of plastic🤡
Mines just started doing this smh 😂😑
what did u end up doing?
The 4.0 is indeed a interference engine. Ask me how I know about that.
Bummer. Yeah I'm not an expert on it in any way. Just what one guy told me. Did you rebuild or have to buy a replacement?
I completely rebuilt it from top to bottom. Crank polished, new pistons, bored, honed, rings, timing gcomponents, rebuilt the heads, etc etc. It's so quiet now I can't even hear it running.@@BenjaminSahlstrom
@@iamdjnam That's super awesome! I can only hope that I could someday do that intensive of a project on an engine. Good work!
How do u know about that......
Same happened to me got a new use motor for 250$ piston was in a million pieces
czcams.com/video/znXn0GlP_Ys/video.html
Definitely an interference engine. I suspect main timing chain to jackshaft jumped time, bending every valve. (Happened at 70mph). Cracked drivers side aluminum valve cover.
It sounds like an aircraft radial lol
Once mine did it i sold it
What year was it and how many miles did it have on it ?
@joeadler5379 2006 and it had only 130k
THAT ain't timing! Something is loose.
Definately sounds bad ... u Should of bought a Camaro. 😁 Chevy Ftw ! 😂
Haha, I know right! Anything would sound better than this thing right now!!!
