The SM81 is great on snare blended with a 57 or m201. It exposes that top end and ring of the snare. I used 15 mics here as a test because I’m getting ready to track a band, but could definitely get away with just using my standard 12 mic setup.
You can get a lot of use out of tape, if you don’t mind reusing it. The maintenance I do myself so that’s not an issue, but definitely has to be taken into consideration.
Heya, love the vibe, just found your channel, if you don't have it already check out the unidyne III (3) sm57s they sound better than the modern mics, I think you'll appreciate them, similar to the sm56 used on many classic recordings.
It’s my dream to have a drum set up and to sound great like that. And I lost count on how many preamps on the drum. One question though. What about the preamps on the board, how do they sound, are they not better with all those transformers. Is there a reason why you track externally?
One piece at a time! That’s how I did it, and you can definitely do it too. A kick here, a snare there, a preamp this week, a compressor next month. And eventually it all comes together. Keep working at it until your satisfied For the preamps, I’m a complete slob. I love preamps so much I have approximately 70, and although I really only use 20 or so at a time, I love every one I have. That includes the mci console preamps which I do use. They have a vintage color and vibe to them, so I mainly use them for styles of music that benefit from that vibe.
so have so many great mikes and outboard gear. Lovely. I Enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them!
Snare sounds great!,👍
Thanks for listening
I gotta dig out my SM81s. Nice work

Thought about getting a 24 track Reel 2 Real, but the price of tape and maintenance scares me away

It helps when you have the ability to maintain it, otherwise you’re at the mercy of a tech
