When you think of Bhoot’s fate, it’s sad for more reasons than just the obvious. His whole life, Bhoot was ridiculed, mocked, and hated by the other wolves for his difference. But, then, he runs into someone who likes what makes him different but for the completely wrong reason.

That line hits hard, "You're not special, Bhoot! Its just something your mother tells you to make you feel better about yourself, because you came out wrong!" Somehow Mowgli gives voice to a feeling I've had ever since I was little. That there was something wrong with me, that I came out wrong, that I am different from others. I was born with a hearing loss and was one of only two kids to wear a hearing aid at my school, or at least that I knew of. I've always struggled with anxiety and being "too sensitive". I suspect I may have ADHD or ASD too, and I'm currently looking into getting evaluated by someone that will evaluate adults for ADHD/ASD. I've always felt different from others, like an outsider. But then again, maybe that was just my social anxiety talking. Either way this line really strikes a chord with me and it hurts but it's also almost cathartic in a weird way.
So often adults tell kids that are different that they're "special" to make them feel better about themselves. And I'm not saying that's bad or wrong, they have good intentions. Maybe in a way they're right, we are special, but kids can also tell when adults are lying or just saying things to make them feel better. Kids are lot more perceptive than you think, and they come to realize that those words are just platitudes. It's so ubiquitous that other children/teens will use the word "special" as an insult e.g. "Oh, he's just special" or calling their peers "speds" (special education) or calling someone "special needs".
If people were more like Bhoot, then the world would be a better place but, just like Bhoot, they often share his fate
