When it comes to road-worthy rally cars, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better alternative than the Subaru Impreza WRX STi!
It may have first been released way back in 2004, but let’s be honest, given the latest Subarus have been pretty boring, you need to travel this far back to find one that’s worth reviewing!
But does it still stand the test of time? Mat drove one of these when it was first released, but will he still be as impressed as he was 16 years ago? Stick with him for his latest review to find out!

It may be 16 years old, but does this Impreza WRX STi still stand the test of time?! Let us know what you think below!
Yup
It’s an amazing car
Old car but i like it
Rally icon I love it
Can you do a drag race with it?
Rumour has it that the beginning scene needed to be resolved with a carwow stick of truth.
Underrated comment 😂
😂😂
Only if he doesn't wish to remain alive 😂
Legit lmao on the toilet takinf a shit
On my channel I barely do opening scenes, I'm thinking I should start though. Currently just making people laugh rippin my truck around in the mountains
You should review more of these 2000-2010 cars to see what they looked like
Agreed it's interesting seeing how cars have changed over time.
how bout the start of lexus rx models....its basically toyota but luxury... but its best to get 2001 or 2002 with full option....but sadly its not going to happen is it??? And it can be kinda boring but its interesting....
and drag them against the new hatches , lets see how they well against their granddads ,and do an EVO!!
Indeed i like to see those cars competing to the newer cars to see how mich faster the newer cars are!
Mazda 6 MPS
"...because Subaru has gone all boring..."
I felt that.
sad but true...
and the brotha Mitsubishi being boring :(
They're doing better than mitsubishi though.
They new STIs are still one of the most fun and least boring sports cars you can buy today, especially comparing to the likes of the Focus RS and Golf R
Edit: oh right the UK doesn’t get them anymore 😂😂😂
Blame the government. Emissiom rules make cars trash nowadays
Cars from 2020: appeal to smartphone buyers
Cars from the 2000s: appeal to drivers
Nailed it 👍🏻
That is so true I just wish normal non-car people bought cars not SUVs because as mat said if they made a car like this nowadays it would have 500 horsepower from the factory and it would be better overall but no they stopped it and put stupid CVTs in them
Sad but it feels very true

@Dzek Trbosjek completely relaxed. just asking a question. just because it was staged
5.2s on a not to agressive launch, where you didn't even shift very fast is really really fast
This car equiped with a big hybrid turbo should be a rocket ! 🚀😱
Especially considering the initial turbo lag
Never seen matt smile so much in a car. That's a testament to how good classics are :-)
Easy to smile when you don't own the car\pay for it
I used to work for Subaru in the early to mid 2000’s. Great memories. Superb cars (if also a little flawed). It’s annoyed me that Subaru hasn’t been able to keep up with the competition, especially in a sector they helped to define. Humbug.
Had mine over 10 years this year, still going strong has 163k on the clock, unmodified just the prodrive pack.
That's great to hear. My previous one had 143k miles and my current one has 104k miles.
I'm at 173K but it's been tuned to 323 WHP and 357 WTQ since 2014.
Nice...I regret moding mine cause I blew the engine twice and hated the expenses....should have kept it stock
@@metrix9125 its always a gamble with these. Sometimes you get lucky.

I do. It’s just modern enough & not horrendously cheap; also the seats & upholstery looks wicked!
Legit my fav interior, simple, cheap, comfy.
I love the interior, it's simple and not so over engineered it gets ugly like most cars
@Kai Engels ok
This version of the STI was my dream car growing up playing need for speed underground 2.

Yes...
I had this exact model and loved every minute. In three years ownership it never let me down and didn’t lost any money. I still get a little emotional when I see the current owner driving it around. Awesome car.
My neighbour had one of these back in the days. Loved hearing him drive away, cause that exhaust sound is lovely.
The joy on Mat's face tells me everything I need to know. There's a reason why people love Subaru's so much! May not be the fastest, but bags of character make them awesome to own.
They also sound better than porsches
Make it 500 bhp and it will kill alot of sport cars on the road 😜
@del635 i have no sti but iam the first owner (blobeye) bought it 2006. today i changed the pcv Valve.

Looking at the video sections, the "engine" section starts at 2:07, which is funny because this STI runs an EJ207

I have a 2019 Sti and i STILL like this body style more!
Well then you're a fool for not gettin what you like more , especially since this generation is cheaper than the 2019 , you got no excuse
alexilaiho321 I said i like this body style better but i didn’t say it was a better overall car!
This model does have the cheapest interior, ugly dashboard, cheap breaks and ugly wheels. Plus i know lots of people that have this model wish they had my model year, but It’s not about the money, i didn’t want something that had a bunch of miles or mods on it, overall the older models ride like shit. Compared to mines! The raer and side view is what i like but its not better than mines!
Rs3 owners be like "how's an awd going sideways" 😂😂😂
Well...Subarus with stock coilovers they understeer a lot. But tbh can’t be worst than Audi hehe
@@stefano4029 no bud coilovers have nothing to do with it, proper impreza's have awd dccd which can create permanent rear bias so are rear wheel awd.. an rs3 has haldex so is front wheel drive until it detects slip then sends power to rear wheels lol which is why it understeers and can not go sideways and if you really try looks ridiculous lol
@@brucewayne2397 ye this model has dccd, but without it imprezas understeer a lot. with proper coilovers you "kill" understeer and you dont need the dccd anymore.
@@stefano4029 i agree without dccd u do but still not as bad as rs3 lol as usually is 50% fixed split back an front if car does not cone with dccd (not sure about wrx etc), best situation is have both coilovers and dccd together, dccd even without coilovers is very good and is much better then coilovers alone.

Back in the day I had four in a row... Classic Turbo, STi PPP, P1 then a final RB320. Needless to say it was the most fun I ever had in my cars. The P1 with straight-through would lift a leg mid-corner and handled better than my Integrale.

Sucks to suck
Yeah i've heard German cars are pretty bad too over there. At least compared to ones made in Germany.
At least you guys can import JDM cars if you pony for it. The 95 cars are beginning to look tempting. Here in Norway they made JDM cars impossible to register a few years back.
Je Moeder yeah they are just unreliable as foke..
A car i still stare at whenever i see one. Sam you own a great car! Props to you!
Great review and to the point. Australia got the same version as in the UK and im lucky to own one in WR Blue with the last of the EJ207.

Need to see Celica GT-Four vs Evo 5 vs 22b Wrx Sti drag race
I would have to think it would go to the 22B. I drove a ST205 and it was shit, the Evo 5 is quick no doubt, but the 2.2 in that 22B would be tough to beat. I owned a STi type R, and in stock form it was just faster than an evo 8 in a straight line.
Would be an interesting race no doubt though.
sti wins in a straight line, evo wins around a track
A bloke that lives near me has a 22b. Looks and sounds great. He also has an R34 and R35.
@@zeroyon4562 the 22b has short gear ratios like the rally car. I'd bet on it, unless it was a long stretch for a drag race
I had a blobeye for 3 years. Easy to mod, sounded glorious, room for the family & the weekly shop. Hard to beat its pound per performance ratio. Not german quality though. Great memories.

Had a hawkeye wrx. Altho a non sti, still a very fun car to drive. The burbling exhaust note and all. So much good memories. Moved on to an FD2 Type R after.
Had a WR1 which was basically this with a few more Prodrive tweeks and in a lovely ice blue, Best car I ever had.
19:00
You can hear Mat laughing before calling Sam’s car “Rubbish”.
Really enjoyed this vid, thanks! My vote for best ever Scooby is the blob-eye Spec C Type RA. Mechanical rear LSD, ball bearing twin scroll (factory 22psi), quick rack, factory lowered w adjustable dampers, much lighter, much stiffer, etc. The greatest "drivers" impreza imo, the last before electronic driver aids. Biased, because I own one of the 300 that were ever made :)
The adjustable dampers were a STI pink catalogue item and NOT standard. Only S202, S203 and S204 newage had adjustable dampers from factory. Not even the RA-R had adjustable dampers be default (I've seen 2 RA-R's now both had standard red struts)
I'd argue the S202 is the most hardcore car as it was based off the lightest Spec C (The Type RA Spec C bugeye) but with every STI pink catalogue box ticked, PLUS the titanium exhaust system... The later S203 and S204 were base STI cars with a roof vent and full pink catalogue, and so were actually really heavy.
Had a Prodrive version, loved it - view over bonnet and sound at low revs between stone cottages definitely gives you impression of driving an old WRC car.....however fuel cons is umangeable (I averaged 16) and back likes to step out on fast sweepers....
I Have the Exact same colour and spec subaru as this one ( 2005 Model) Had it for 5 Years . The feeling you get when driving it can only be expressed the way Matt was laughing and giggling when its on Song in the video, I could really understand why he was doing that!. Its a truly amazing machine in this day of anodine hyper fast hot hatches with no character or feel!
Love your content carwow, you inspired me to start my own youtube channel.

Next week it's going in for some work to increase performance, incl bigger turbo, front mount intercooler, bigger injectors, exhaust change and am putting the unequal length manifold on for the Scooby rumble, and power should be going up to around 400bhp and 500nm, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do!

One of the best cars out there..and I definitely think this does require some drag strip attention..
The gearbox will go on launch if not careful
Theodore Deverell Wrong, the six speed in the STi is nearly bulletproof. The weak link if the car has sticky tires would be the rear half shafts.
@@mileslumpkin9500 well lord Mat said it would go so imma believe him.
Theodore Deverell Well I own a 2004 STi in the states and have since you guessed it, 2004. Let me educate you. The 6 speed in the STi was co-developed with Porsche and reinforced to handle twice the factory horsepower. Think Mat is right, try some research.
@@mileslumpkin9500 I mean. I cba to do any research but I feel like the specs between US and UK are different. Also, more importantly, many subaru gearbox rebuilders quote that STI and WRX transmissions both fail similar amounts in their line of work. I learnt this from a Gears and Gasoline video on Subarus. Also, i didn't mean any hate towards the WRX as they are v cool cars. But just because you own one doesn't mean you need to be so aggy. I was just quoting what Mat said.
