    The 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi was a special car -- and today I'm going to show you why. I'm going to review the original WRX STi, then I'm going to drive it and show you what it's like behind the wheel of the Impreza WRX STi.

      Because Porsche clearly isn’t cost cutting badges on a $100k+ trackday version of a premium car that has badges normally, whereas Subaru clearly is on a car that costs $30k. Sometimes the same actions are genuinely done for different reasons.

    • @mudman6156

      Focus Baloney!!! Porsche might use the excuse that they’re saving weight, but that’s a load of crap. They’re saving money. There’s PLENTY OF OTHER PLACES they could’ve cut out on the Porsche to save significantly MORE weight, but they didn’t. The Porsche is still a pig of a car that could easily loose an additional 250 or more pounds without compromising it, WITHOUT resorting to cloth door pulls and stickers for badges.

      Also it’s common in Europe for cars to have what’s called fog lights but only on the rear, light that is visible on foggy weather so other drivers can actually distinguish you and not crash into you. In addition here in the balkans for example we have some roads with almost no lights at all, so you have to adjust your headlights upwards to make the oncoming turns more visible, we aim the headlights differently on big open roads with loads of traffick and on roads with zero visibility.

    The "dial" for the head light angle is not for foggy weather. It should be set at 0. But when you load the car with weight (or hook on a trailer) and the rear starts to sink down, you level the headlights so they point DOWN by turning the knob up (to 1, 2, 3), so you don't blind oncoming cars with your lights. Very common in Europe. In newer cars the headlights have an automatic function for that.

    • @miroslavhajduk1797

    One of the things that makes the '04/'05 STi feel faster than what came after, is the gearing. I owned an '05 and '08 and the gearing difference was very noticeable. Some people didn't like the shorter gearing but on tight-twisty roads or the race track it was *fantastic*. You could pull out of a corner in 3rd like most cars pull in 2nd. Yeah, the shorter gearing hurt the 0-60 (which everyone was obsessed about) and you were almost always working the gearbox, but it really helped make use of the engine's powerband and give it a bit more kick. I still miss my '05 STi...it had numerous improvements over the '04 while still being "raw" and it was just a blast to drive.

      @@nodo7575 Counterpoint: As a car guy, this was the car that culturally put the nail in the coffin for sports cars. It kinda depresses me looking back at it. It's not a cool car. It was a boxy, factory souped up 4-door grocery getter that SHOULD have been a rally clone tearing down back roads on knobbies... but instead found itself slammed 'n' fart-canned along with hot hatches all post Fast & Furious 1 happening. Budget-minded performance cars would all morph into boxy, partially-practical, squares forever.

      @DapperHesher Před 4 lety

      @Tyler You mean a Lotus Elise/Exige? Been there, done that. Maybe like an Alfa 4C when they get affordable second hand. Nah, let's be real, though. I'm just gonna blow the scratch on guitars.

    • @DapperHesher
      @DapperHesher Před 4 lety

      @Tyler The STI is a mostly boring car. I've driven one. Meh. Overrated at the least. Moreover, it LOOKS utterly boring. It's a tall mom sedan with pink stickers and some performance options. It's not even got the sexy factor of an RX7, which in itself wasn't bonkers, but a least it looked the fucking part. "Fun yet practical" is exactly why it sucked. The "yet" part makes it look like a turd. I'd much rather have a practical car that did practical 100%, and a fun car that did fun 100%. The compromise, meet-in-the middle, bullshit is what ruined fun cars to begin with. The STI was a prime example of that. It's why the banal, flat landscape of CUVs make me essentially despise the entirety of affordable car culture today. The C8 Vette I guess is a glimmer of hope, but not much more than a glimmer. I'm not holding my breath for a resurgence of sports cars in 2020. I should have gotten into riding motorcycles when I was younger. They didn't seem to lose their way like car guys have.
      In the end, the market completely drives it. The market became FAR too conservative during that time period, though (we could talk to infinity about all the cultural, economic, regulation, etc. reasons why) and it is what it is. The "fuck subtlety" crowd which I firmly put myself into, got pretty much abandoned. I mean, you can participate in those kinds of cars if you're fuckoff rich (supercars, hypercars, whatever are bonkers), but fewer-and-fewer of us are fuckoff rich statically. Boring ass cars for the masses, and the embracing of them, are a symptom of other things entirely.

    Back in 2007, I searched for my 2004 STi nation-wide for a year trying to find one that wasn't modified to death or crashed. Patience paid off, and I still have it today. After an engine rebuild at 114K miles, (plus a few mild mods) it makes 286 HP at the wheels. Of course people squeeze way more power out of these engines, but for my application (autocross) it's got plenty of power. Coilovers with adjustable shocks and front camber plates made it much more manageable. I can't believe it's a 17 year-old car already! Anytime I've experimented with DCCD adjustments, my times are slower, so it seems like the computer does a better job. These are pretty spartan cars, but they put the money where it counts. If you want to go fast for few $$$, plastic trim, no armrests, and no trunk lid liner aren't deal breakers at all. And there's a certain joy that comes with being able to catch or beat much more costly cars from Lotus, Porsche, etc. on the tarmac. I've known a few people who had one of these cars, later bought newer STis and each of them really missed their old one. Subaru got it right the first time.

    I remember this car from Fast and Furious, Gran Turismo and Rally. My dad loved the Impreza and had loads of models, McRae and Solberg drove these into the history books.
