PantsuPirate OLD it’s because Subaru’s are iconic for being painted blue, and lancer evos are iconic for being painted red. Most of the best rally competition versions of them (McRaes 555 Impreza was blue and Tommy Makinens Marlboro Evo VI was red) use the colours in their liveries so it’s a bit weird that Top Gear would reverse the colours

I just want a new actual car from them. They need to remake the gto twin turbo for 2020 like what Toyota did with supra. I love the gto twin turbo alot and consider it better than the supra and eclipse.
Well the ford fiesta recently died in US because Americans keep proving we love Truck's and SUVs instead of awesome FWD cars that has a model range for everyone witch pisses me off since I own the ST model of it

yeah mine too. but since i won't ever own one (both because it's old AF now and because i can't justify owning a car that can't even get to my farms due to bad dirt roads), i bought the next best thing which is a mitsubishi outlander gt, with a glorious 240hp v6 and the same awd system that's in this evo.

The fact that it's "old" is a positive. Everything made in the last 7 years is full of electronic crap that makes cars slower, heavier and lazier. Even the Evo X is guilty of this compared to the previous Evo IX, but it's still far better than most cars made in 2021.

I think the face lift really saved the sti hatch, along with the stiffer suspension after the 2008 model year. It’s much more comparable now than it was in 2008.
I've a 2011 Hatchback Sti and it's a great car. Definitely a worthy competitor after they upgraded the hatch

The colours are also 'backwards'; typically the Subaru is blue and the Mitsubishi is red.

That's not really how the dccd system works, though. A common misconception. The manual modes are not changing the nominal 41-59 fr-rr torque split. They're changing the relative looseness or tightness of the center differential, and has a mode that fully locks it for when you're on a consistently very low-traction surface. But the nominal torque split is unchanged.
Funny that you say that because the type r Honda civic which has all its power to the front wheels beats the wrx sti in drag race and is 3 seconds a lap faster on track..

Totally agree with you. And older Evos (especially Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen Edition) are far better than Evo X because it has more "racecar" feel. In a good way.
They both were built pretty much for rally car racing and only fanboys bought either. Now they're both way more "famous" and they've built them to be a bit more "every day" type cars. I've seen videos of Subaru Type R STi's beat porsche's in a quarter mile and definitely used to see WRX beat Evos all day in most catergories. The bit of modernization done to the Evos just happned to benefit them a bit more than the Subarus.....especially an IMPREZA....not the fairest of challenges seeing as how the Imprezas are even more tuned down. /endrant

Evo 1-3 RS didn't even come with carpet, and had window winders. They didn't even paint the wing mirrors or door handles to save weight. It's a joke, yeah, but dinosaurs know exactly what Jeremy means. The only button there was to squirt water on the intercooler when you were giving it the beans...

I sold my 2008 Evo X (bough it douzaine of years ago), just to upgrade to the finale edition 2015 version this month ...to forever keep it.
Active yaw control makes all the difference. It's basically as close as you can get to a WRC drivetrain in a production car
I have one of those Subaru STI’s and I’m still loving that car today. I’d rather keep that one going than buying anything new. It’s such a great car. They really don’t make them like they used too.
I think they look good, but in this test, the Subaru might have performed a little better had they used a sedan instead of the hatch. I don't know why they chose the hatch, but I thought maybe because it was more popular on the road and also in rally racing than the sedan of that gen.

I always wanted an Evo growing up and I thought the Evo 10 the best looking Evo of all time. Sadly by time I graduated college and actually made enough money to afford one of these, the Evo was cancelled. I currently drive a WRX and love it. I would be happy with either one but owning a new car with a warranty was enough of a decision maker for me.

I may be biased here since I love Subaru so much, but the Impreza should be given more credit, although yes there are a lot of options, they're good because you can have the car respond the exact way you want it to, also it didn't seem like Jeremy had any trouble finding a single switch or button you had to press, it was all clearly there in front of him and he went through it all quickly
You know I'm really a Subaru fan but I admire both the Evo and the wrx. There's really no reason for a matchup. They are both awesome and are so similar in performance anyone should be happy to have one or the other or both. @Aristotelis I 100% would agree to see that and buy one if I had the money for a production model.

Evo X all the way :D So sad that Mitsubishi would discontinue the Lancer Evolution :'( The Lancer Evo was #1 on my car wishlist. I would definitely have one over any Ferrari or Lamborghini or any supercar out there.

If I remember correctly, when he tested the Hawkeye Subaru or the blobeye, with the evo 9 or 8, he preferred the subaru

He said as far as I remember that Subaru is more suitable for daily drive, and that is propably true, but Evo is far better when it comes to handling and speed, plus its not really useless in daily life either.

The 2008 STI wasn’t the first Subaru inspired by video gaming. I saw an old auto journal video from 1985 where they tested an XT coupe. That thing had an ‘80’s style arcade gauge panel with car-on-road graphics and a joystick-style gear shifter.

i didn't know how to drive manual the other day and instead of the wrx ended up getting a crosstrek which i'm still happy and can still jam to eurobeat and still do drifts in it stock and still be able to go offroad in it perfect

Chandler Johnston sti choice is irrelevant. The hatch has more horsepower and torque then any models
Makes no difference (I own one). It's just throttle pedal remapping. S and S# still have the same level of power at the same RPM.
Erik Tomlinson if you own one and basically said that the throttle pedal mapping is the only difference. Ya I know, same with intelligent mode.....same power, different throttle response. And s and s+ have a huge difference. I own one to sti not wrx...s+ makes a big difference

Always dreamed of owning an evo since my childhood, I'm 37 now and still unable to afford an evo.. But I own a Pajero Sport now which is quite good

That wasn't the whole story, it was very funny, because after Jeremy told us that the Evo was much better, the Stig took both cars around the track, and the Subaru trashed the Evo in the ladder board.

I suppose this is why Subaru mucked around with the suspension on the GR STi. After 2010 the springs and dampers were quite different. Does anyone know if they re-did this comparison, even in print Top Gear? I can't find anything.
I am going to miss the evo so much but you know what people say - legends don’t die, they are reborn. If you don’t believe this look at the skyline, the Supra - plenty of other examples. The day will come, mark these words. Until then I am going to be driving around with the evo‘s smaller brother - the ralliart.
For the sti; Coil overs, a nice exhaust, front and rear swar bars and you got a great car. I just love the sti steering wheel, shifter and the gauges are so awesome.

The FQ 360 was round about $35k at launch back then. Compared to a $25k sti. Huge difference in price.

Well after the Evo 10, the lancer is a crossover. After the sti hatchback, the wrx became it's own model.

It's literally the same car, but with a hatchback. Drives the same, handles the same, the hatch adds like 30 pounds of weight the only thing the hatch did was make it more practical

Teradmc Yes, the same 2.5 engine block the STis from North America had. In 2011 they eventually released the 2.0 TT STi, and in Sedan form.

I love my 2007 STi but would never say the EVO is a bad car. I just sharpened mine up a little bit.
Down fall of both cars:
Subaru: The early days of the Impreza were popular, in speed and price. Most car enthusiast or beginners drove it. After a while subaru made more generations of these cars, giving us more entertainment with the Impreza, BRZ and the forester. After a while subaru started to make these cars more softer, after the war against Subaru and Mitsubishi ended. They made hatchbacks and cooled down on the Impreza. But Subaru made a comeback with the 2018 Impreza and the new 2021 version.
Mitsubishi: There was a total of 2 competitors in this. The Evo and the lancer. The evo was one of the main competitors of the war, with powerful cars and top speed. People were confused wether choosing a sublime or evo. Starting it’s impression in 2005, Subaru and Mitsubishi both fought for their best cars, and when Subaru got softer, Mitsubishi still produced these cars, until the owner decided the cut these cars off the production line. The evo was killed, but rumours that another Evo line will be started.
what makes me mad the wrx was the hatch back.
I've driven both and I'd take the Evo any day hands down. Mitsubishi engines last longer, better to drive, and their cars look better!!

Have had my Evo X since 2015. End of 2021 the engine build was completed along with..many, upgrades. Love this car.
