My suggestion for anyone traveling to Iceland , don't shop in the store she just showed you(10-11) , that is the most expensive store you can walk into , there is a reason it only survives in down town Reykjavík. Most likely tourists keeping it alive. Go for Bónus or Krónan , More affordable.

Ok, so I am Norwegian. The Icelandic language is Norrøn or old Norwegian. Of course Icelandic has changed somewhat compared to old Norwegian. I would say Norwegian today is Grammarly speaking more like Danish. And that`s what I like about Iceland. That they have kept their old language. Norway is a mixture of old Norwegian and Danish. And we have way more dialects than any country in Europe. In Norway that is.

As an Icelander I really felt like that when I visited Norway around Christmas time, I was stunned by how beautiful the country is and its architecture etc. I also thought Iceland might be similar if we only had 14 times more people. I was also quite sad that we were split of from you for centuries. From the early 19th century we have had to struggle with linguistic Puritanism which fortunately enables us to read the Sagas relatively easily but prevents us from communicating with Norwegians in our own language. P.S. I think a lot of icelandic national identity is based on the Sagas and that Saga-age in our history but I think there are a lot more Icelanders that would want to be able to speak, watch, read Norwegian than those who currently read the sagas. Very unfortunate this puritanism, we can think Rasmus Rask for that.

Icelandic is similar to the language that the Vikings spoke,. If I were a Viking I would have been able to communicate with a modern Icelandic person. However, many people in Iceland learn Danish, but they are unable to learn the Danish prononciation so when they speak Danish it sounds like Norwegian. The Faroese language is by the way similar to Icelandic but a bit closer to Norwegian.

Norway's beautiful and the norwegians are friendly and positive people. If I'd have to pick another nationality it would be norwegian. The thing is... When driving around Norway you almost always have to prolong the drive with double the time because of the mountains. As a Dane I hate mountains, nice as they are, but they are sooo inconvenient. In Iceland there's mountains as well, but it's not that many things you do in the countryside except for visiting tourist sights and enjoying the occasional volcano 🤪 My pick therefore is Iceland, hence people are as friendly as in Norway.

While you are in the area...maybe drop by Faroe Islands? Otherwise I would like to hear your opinion about Sweden and Denmark. You already know about the relationship between the "Scandinavian brothers". We love to point out the distinctions between us, and make fun of each other, but at the same time we are so similar in almost everything culturally and politically, that the differences may seem silly to people from the outside. But we have to point them out to create distinction like siblings banter to keep things interesting and hopefully funny. Behind this facade we love each other and trust in each other deeply. In truth though, it seems that the main "fight" is between Denmark and Sweden, with Norway, Iceland and Finland stand back and watch. After the viking age it is Sweden and Denmark who have been the biggest "empire makers", and seen themselves as significant on the international stage. As a result Sweden and Denmark may be less interested in the other nordic countries than we are in them. In later history, when thoughts of empire has dwindled away, we like to see each other as equals with similar development trajectories. Maybe Sweden is the country that pride itself most on being the most "modern" country, while Norway scores highest on the worlds democracy index, and with Denmark on top of the happiness index.
