    I'm so sorry to hear that your mom doesn't invite you to family events. I'm sure you'd be happy to bring a vegan dish of your own, and there's also lots of Korean dishes that happen to vegan which she could make! I hope things improve soon

      there's some activities like korean bbq and hot pot which are generally full of meat... it's difficult to do in two separated batches...?

      Same happens to me... my SIL's excuse was that she didn't know how to cook for me... when I ALWAYS bring something I can eat and share, and have said repeatedly I don't expect any special menu. Even in the unlikely event that there was nothing appropriate on the menu, I could just nuke a simple potato or something! Honestly I think the issue is their cognitive dissonance about eating animals they could never kill and gut themselves, so it's too uncomfortable to face, and I'm the unwanted reminder.

    Here’s a thought on the Koreanness of being vegan. My first vegan meals were in the home of South Korean Buddhist monk in Uijeongbu. I was a volunteer LDS (Christian) missionary, and she would have my companion and me over for lunch every Saturday. Traditionally her sect of Buddhism abstains from meat and eggs. She also cooked very traditional dishes that omitted dairy because they just do. She was a phenomenal woman who I will never forget for many reasons, but she’s very vegan and very Korean, and I think those things can go together quite nicely.

      Well,to be you and to be a part of you family, I can’t answer to, my feelings, I am black; but I can say I know what it feels like to be separated from your family because of eating styles. Be courageous in whatever you do. And continue on your vegan journey. I found, where I thought there weren’t a lot of black vegans-I thought it was just a white people thing. There are a lot of black vegans. Just like your dad, black men have one of the highest rates of colon and other cancer. So, my reasoning for becoming vegan is of course, health. Read post from Tabitha Brown, Cheap Lazy Vegan-whose also Korean, and Sweet Potato Soul, just to name a few-if you haven’t yet. Keep up the good work!!!

      Just a little about me: I’ve been in caregiving facility for the past year now. I discovered I had a brain tumor and have been on a road to recovery. It was hearing about red meat that led me vegan. Why is it a lot of other countries beside that US of A has gone vegan and knows about red meat which happens to be responsible for a lot of other diseases such as type ll diabetes , prostate cancer, hypertension, etc.

      @@elizabethroberts2970 May you keep healing! Look into frankincense oil which has the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier and shrink tumors. I have experience with this.

    Honestly, as a person who was born and raised in Korea, I think your food already portrays your ethnicity enough as Korean. I can’t agree with those that say your food doesn’t have Koreanness. I mean what is Koreanness tho? I understand that when it comes to food, culture and traditions always follow and you have to follow these traditional recipes to make it more authentic. But I still think food is just a way that we remember our ancestors, special moments that we had with our families, or simply to remember who I am and where I belong to. So please disregard what people say about your food. Just by watching your video makes me feel comfortable as if I’m visiting my auntie’s place in the U.S. Your 유부초밥 looks amazing to me and since there are more trends for vegan in Korea now, I’m sure your recipes will be very helpful. 그리고 목소리가 너무 좋으세요! 💕

    The story about not being invited because there was no vegan food for new years is just so sad. My mom would always invite me over on sundays even though I couldn't eat the food and even tried to make something suitable for me as well (german food is mostly not suitable for vegans at all). I would be heartbroken. Really so sad. If she wanted me to be there and I couldn't eat the food, she would warn me, but always invite :(
    I hope your relations don't suffer from this anymore in the future.

      You should have brought vegan food with you and brought enough to share. Maybe you could give her the book How Not to Die by Dr Michael Greger. Ask her to go vegan.

    I'm mexican and let me tell you our food is traditionally super heavy, contains meat and a lot of fat, but as I don't eat that anymore I bring my food wherever I go and when people ask me something I simply say "'I'm on diet". I think it's easier for them yo understand that, than if I would say I'm vegan 😆

      You can use jackfruit as a meat substitute :)
      I make tacos like that every so often. You can get canned jackfruit at Trader Joe’s, Asian grocery stores and even Mexican Stores like Vallarta. Drain the brine, cut off the firm corners. The raw consistency is stringy like chicken once you mash it with a fork. Add your favorite seasonings and cook it on the grill, plus you can also make red or green mole tamales with jackfruit too. I hope this helped :)

    I can relate I am Chinese and the only vegan yet alone vegetarian in my entire family, it was hard for them to understand it and most opposed to it, eating together was awkward but things have gotten better and I continue to stand by my beliefs. I notice my family has progressed to eating a bit healthier and more vegetables. ♥️♥️ It's okay, things take time, stay true to what's most important to you 💕

      I'm with you friend! Born and raised in Beijing, been vegan for 3 years. There is a Loooong way to go for the Chinese community as traditionally speaking meat and animal products are not only symbolize health but also prosperity. Chinese culture is desensitized at this point. BUT, I am sure there are more than just you and me every day trying to influence people we love around us. One day at a time!

      @@miyacoxlong2343 Hi Miya! I was a pescatarian before went vegan. Your question is truly real. I think allowing yourself to try different vegetables and trying different fruits, imitation products event may help? Instead of thinking about limiting your choices, think about exploring new food. We ask ourselves to buy one new plant food a week to try just for the fun of it. Also, watching Cowspiracy, What The Health really really helped me cut the diary away. Best wishes to you and your fiance

      @@tiangewu3248 i am also asian and i think our dishes lack the vegan options a lot.I try making our traditional recipes but there is always need for meat or egg so it becomes hard.Avacados are costly in my country.Wish there were more Asian vegan creators.

    Nailed it on the hardest part of being vegan. I think it’s at the top of the list of all the vegans I know (myself included). The parties you are no longer invited to, the friends that keep distance etc’. After nine years, I have new good friends (not all vegan BTW) and my family gradually accept my way of life (at least stopped complaining and criticizing). ❤️

      It's just so weird to me, i get that food can connect people, but my family has always made sure to made alternatives for me. I am vegetarian, not vegan yet... so that might make it a bit easier, but still, they always try their best. As for friends, we always looked for places to eat that also had a veggie option for me, I dont understand why its so hard for some people to adjust

      At xmas my mum would just hide the meat in the kitchen, everyone was really nice about it, not when i was pregnant though, they didn't want to risk me puking so i was relegated to eat in the living room on my own, and that was my last xmas in our old family home, the house i was raised in, before my mum moved out and new people moved in, so sad.

    Forks over Knives really changed my perspective too and led me to a vegan challenge for a month or two. That was almost a year ago and I still don't miss meat or dairy. Not to mention the healthy benefits from a plant based lifestyle...my body just feels happier being vegan

      Are you takin supplements..like vit b12..and d3..and omega 3 (algea oil)
      You can still rip the benefits of a plant based diet without actually compromising in these three important Nutritients..

      @@science-y9209 I do take a supplement that is specifically for plant based eating. It's high in omegas, B vitamins, prebiotic, iron, and vitamin D3 plus several others. I also get a well balanced vegan intake. It took a bit to figure out but it works out well and I don't feel like I'm lacking anything

      @@maddmax4148 Look at what you are eating usually: what is maybe already vegan, where is just few animal products that you can leave out, or replace with vegan alternatives. And then explore the huge world of vegan recipes on CZcams - you'll find easy recipes, vegan "on a budget" up to anything fancy. Have fun : )

    The “lost” of community is definitely one of them. I remember getting into fights with my colleagues after we came back from a field training. While they wanted to eat at KBBQ, I wanted to have Vegan Korean Tofu Soup spot that had vegan friendly options. Nonetheless, i sucked it up and just ate salad and rice. My family is relatively supportive of my veganism but unfortunately, I must buy my own vegan food as my mom is unfamiliar with how to even cook vegan food. A beautiful story attached to a beautiful recipe! Thanks Joanne!

      It's not hard to cook vegan. Tell her to use meat substitute for beef, tofu for chicken, and almond milk for milk. It's easy.

      Being the only vegan in a large family, I always try to make my own meals. Since the majority of my family eats differently than me, I'd rather make mine instead of pushing the burden of cooking different meals to my mom (or whoever was assigned to cook that day)

    As a Korean Vegan myself too (although I'm not an American), I totally hear what you said about the hardest part of being Vegan. My parents still ask me questions like "you still don't eat meat? Kimchi is ok, though, right? (you know most Kimchi has fish sauce or shrimp paste usually...)", thus I feel like I'm never understood for my choice and lifestyle. But I believe that they don't mean to hurt my feelings. Slowly but surely, they've been more accepting and my mom makes extra 반찬 for me whenever I visit. It was nice to hear your story and thanks for sharing!

    You’re probably older than me (I’m 27), and I really don’t know your family... but I need to say this, I’m sorry. I’ve been vegan for 6 years, and I’ve learned that when people want to be with you, being vegan is not an excuse not to invite you. There are no vegetarians or vegans in my family or close friends group. But they will always invite me for everything, and either ask what they can cook, or just ask me to bring something. When it comes to restaurantes, we always discuss if there’ll be options for me. If not, we make other plans. I’ve met people who did what your parents did to you and those relationships simply didn’t last. Even while dating, I’ve met men who made fun/didn’t care and I’ve met men who made arrangements so that food was never a problem. I don’t know if different cultures play a part in this, but it really didn’t sit well with me that your family won’t invite you “because there’s no vegan food”.

    I feel you on this. I feel like the hardest part of being vegetarian truly has never had anything to do with the diet itself, it's always been lack of access to foods and the perceptions from others about being vegetarian. The diet is super easy.

      Not understanding your comment. I was vegetarian for 25 years (before stores even labeled or sold anything as vegetarian) before becoming vegan for about 9 years now. I never had an issue finding "vegetarian food" in restaurants, grocery stores, and even family potlucks. You can get a grilled cheese sandwich or a cream-based pasta dish anywhere, and if you eat eggs, like, whut? You can pretty much eat anything. Anywhere.
      Try going to a family get-together and seeing that the beautiful salad has cheese all over it. That the snacky veggies only have a bacon-mayo dip. That the mashed potatoes have cream and butter. The green beans are swimming in bacon fat. The rice? Cooked in chicken stock, for "flavor".
      As Winston Smith above said, being vegan is not a "diet". For me, it's a moral commitment. I do not want animal cruelty in my food. I regret every one of my 25 years as a vegetarian and wish I'd become vegan from the start. Pretty sure dairy animals and egg-layers might think their lives are a little bit harder.

      If you're vegetarian, I highly reccomend watching dominion or just reading about the egg, dairy, seafood, and any other animal product industry. Being vegan isn't hard. You can make countless meals with just plant-based whole foods alone. The alternatives they offer to day are just a bonus!

They put meat in everything. Sorry to say this but not only your country and your personal bubble exists and a lot of people don't understand food without meat, my family included.

    Korean American here-adopted into a Western family who also doesn’t really understand veganism. Have you written a Korean vegan cookbook yet? I didn’t grow up with Korean dishes and wish I knew more about Korean cooking. If you haven’t already-please consider writing a cookbook! Just discovered you but love your videos so far.

    The hardest part about being vegan for me is other people's reactions to it. I have a cousin who, when he found out I went vegan, he said "what I'm going to do for you, because you're my cousin - whenever I have pork chops, I'm going to have an extra one just for you."
    When I told my family, my mother and brother kept questioning why I didn't want to eat meat anymore for weeks, pretty much every time I ate.
    I don't find it hard to stay vegan (I've been vegan for 5 years this month), it's the jokes and comments from other people, and how isolated I feel sometimes because other people look down on vegans. I have a sister who invites everyone over for thanksgiving every year, but she never makes anything I can eat, so I don't go. She puts chicken broth in everything, including the vegetables. If I had to make my own food to bring with me, I might as well stay home and cook my own meal.

    Your story and that of people in the comments was very moving. I teared up when you talked of feeling expelled from your community. I'm indian and my family is vegetarian but while my parents fully support me not consuming milk products I get a lot of flak for it from my husband's family. They take it as far as 'how will you bear children without the strength that milk gives'🙄. Milk is a constant argument & it also makes me feel guilty like I'm purposefully sabotaging my own health even when I know that milk is more dangerous to health. We all have our battles big & small so please know you're not alone & thank you for sharing your stories even tho they are painful.
    P.S.: I love watching Korean recipes cos they seem to be eaten with relish but they're hardly even vegetarian so finding your channel has been a delight. I feel like I can finally try some of them!☺️

      The sad thing is a lot of Americans have the misconceptions that milk makes you strong because of the false ad campaigns saying milk was good for your bones. It's not. It's actually awful for your bones. Milk is only good for babies and if you're having them, you usually can make that milk yourself. /rant

Please do find more vegans online as that really really helps us feel good and join some activism groups if possible. There is Vegan India Movement on Instagram and you can follow them. Also, follow other activists like Earthling Ed and Joey Carbstrong to stay updated.
      I don't know if you have kids or not, but if you do, please do raise them as vegans and with all your good morals.

    Wow. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I too go through the same thing as a Brazilian since our culinary is heavily meat-oriented. Unfortunately for me veganism has practically severed the already fragile ties I had with my family. I've had a similar experience with my dad last year as he battled a throat cancer. I tried my best to convince my parents about how a vegan diet can prevent several types of cancer but to no avail

      Lower rates is not the same as prevention, though. Like, don't get me wrong, slightly less risk of cancer is always good, but it's very different from no risk.

    This made me tear up. Lovely video, but I have a hard time with my family too since starting my transition to veganism at the end of 2019. I'm 1/4 Korean 1/4 Japanese and 1/2 white mix (mom is 1/2 Korean from her moms side and 1/2 Japanese from her dads)

    I always enjoy your chats and cooking they relate to my life stories especially to my vegan daughter. I had four black friends retire in the same year from LADWP, all four within a year had prostrate cancer. All four had helped me learn my trade and to be a better father to my black children, so I held them very dear. My friend Willie Knight filled a discrimination las suit against LADWP just before he retired, he was also pastor in a small church in Watts. He won the law suit with a little help from a friend. Sadly he passed away this last April and I could not see him due to covid. Food looks delish ty for sharing.

    I'm not vegan but I've been watching a few of your videos and this one touched my heart. My dad past away after his battle of prostate cancer. So while I am a woman it makes me concerned for my husband and our future children

    Your story is both compelling and beautiful...thank you. I went vegan after meeting a smart and friendly cow that was about to be sent to slaughter. The cow was following our conversation while signalling us to scratch her head and it broke my heart and i never forgot her huge brown eyes.

    I’ve been a dirty vegan for the last year and two weeks ago my husband joined the club with me. It’s been a struggle for so long and the last two weeks have not only felt more freeing but the bond that’s happening in my marriage is beyond special. It was hard doing this by myself and I feel loved and cherished more now than I have in the past. Funny that there was so much tied to food😉

    I had been waiting for a while for this question to be answered by you, and damn I wish more people saw the negative health impacts that come with consuming dairy and meat. Health issues related to our diet is the most avoidable factor ever.
    As a vegan, I too go through the social alienation almost, where I'm not invited to certain gatherings or when my friends want to try out a restaurant that doesn't offer vegan options, I almost prefer getting french fries and a tossed lettuce salad when I go out with non vegans rather than staying at home alone.

    I think the hardest part about the transition is having to learn all new recipes and then having to alter those recipes to your liking. Of course, when you're a child, your parents teach you how to make meals and then you take those meals into your adulthood. Nonetheless, being vegan has broadened my awareness to so many spices and ingredients I've never even heard of. You definitely learn something new everyday

    Being chinese indonesian i don’t miss out much of the family or community festivities. I’m always invited to all the family functions coz they think i would bring not only my own food but also something i can share w/ everyone. Also even at a korean bbq place i found something i can eat that’s essentially vegan

    As a fellow Korean vegan/vegetarian, thank you for sharing this, I relate so so much with your story and it’s refreshing to find someone else who went through this experience. I’ve also struggled with reconciling my relationship with the food I grew up with (and cherish) and, subsequently, my family and heritage. Thankfully it gets easier and you get more creative/comfortable as you go but definitely something not far from my mind.

    I didn't expect to cry on a simple recipe video but I did. The story about your father really moved me. My life was also changed because I watched Forks Over Knives one day 6 years ago and I still to this day admire the doctors that were featured in that movie, I often read their books and watch their lectures on youtube. The biggest sadness of my life was me being educated with all of this information and not being able to help those around me. My parents know all of the health benefits of plants and yet they still eat the same foods as always. I would give anything to keep them healthy for as long as possible but I can't do anything more. This is the first video of yours that I watched and I had to instantly subscribe.

    Love yubuchobap. I've only made them myself one time. This looks great! Thanks for sharing your story. Very touching. I have a very dear friend from Korea and she has been really kind about adapting her traditional Korean dishes to vegan versions and sharing them with me. I know how much animal and fish products are in Korean foods. But it really is not terribly difficult to achieve the amazing flavors of Korea without meat. So sorry you have had difficulties being accepted by your family and community. I really appreciate your recipes! Thank you!

    I enjoyed your vlog. I've been wanting to cook Korean food when I found Maangchi's CZcams. I've also enjoyed eating the Korean dishes I've had. So i decided to learn how to cook Korean food. To my great surprise i made a few great dishes. I loved the stew that had pork belly in it. It had just the right amount of heat. And great flavor. I even cooked it for my colleagues, high school science teachers, it went over well. I was sho happy. THEN BAM !!
    I had developed kidney failure, diabetic. I was told i could reverse it if I controlled what I ate. So I tried a detox program that was vegan or whole foods. I dropped my A1C, to nearly hypoglycemic levels, body fat, lower my body mass index, and reversed my kidney level direction. Since then, I had decided to go vegan. It's freaking hard. I never cooked vegan or whole foods. I never shopped for vegan dishes. I really didn't know what to do.
    One of the things I did know was that I was going to miss cooking Korean dishes. 😭😭😭 I decided to ask the Korean cook vloggers I followed if they had Korean dishes that was vegan. I didn't want to stop learning about Korean food. They were so accommodating. They began showing lots of vegan Korean vegan dishes. I'm so glad I found you guys. I'm so happy to have found you. I can have my Korean food and be vegan. 💚💚💚💕

    Trust me, you're helping lot of people who actually wants to try Korean food but can't because of the meat. I feel food is a way to connect to foreign culture along with the language. It gets hard for vegan and vegetarians to actually try the dishes they want to. But you're helping us satisfy our cravings without any cruelty. No judgement for people who eats meat, I understand that it's part of their culture. But I'm grateful that there are people like you who work so hard on bridging that gap.     Thank you for your beautiful story and food! I'm always trying to find fun new recipes for the week night and for some reason I always come back to Korean food, I can't get enough all the amazing flavors. Usually I just try to veganize the recipes myself, I love seeing how other people do it.

    I went vegan in 2015 after a spiritual awakening. So many things you've said here resonate with me so much! From being ousted from my community of friends to not being really tempted but notice how good certain non vegan dishes look. I have new friends now that have other vegan/vegetarian people in their lives, so they will have foods for us ready at their house when we come over. Thank you for sharing!     I am new to your channel and I look forward to all your wonderful Korean recipes. I am African-American but I love Korean and Oriental food. Thank you for incorporating your cooking style and recipe along with your storytelling time. I recently became vegan because of a health scare and I can relate to a lot of what you said about being not included in family functions because of your lifestyle.     Hi! Thanks for you recipies! You're not alone. I'm Indian and Vaishnav at that. We don't eat onions and garlic (not meat of course) and it's even in a country like India that has so many vegetarians. So keep it up!

    Just to make you feel easy, I recommend you to travel overseas i.e., Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, India etc.... Where you fan feel the changes in flavours and you won't get bored of the vegan delicacies.

    Hi. I am not Korean but I am from a lot of really proud midwesterners. And the feelings that you're talking about...of not fitting in ...I am absolutely experienced. Every time I go to gatherings of my family and friends I have to bring all of my own food that's delicious and I share it with everybody but if I don't do that I have nothing to eat. So absolutely the hardest thing about being a person who only eats plants is the social aspect. At least for me. I'm excited to find your Channel today.
