What I like about Nagelsmann is that he learns something new after every single game. That Barcelona - Bayern proved this very well! Compare the first leg vs Barcelona and then this, and you remember the Augsburg - Bayern game? Bayern lost by 1 - 0. Then they faced again in the DFB Pokal few weeks later. Bayern trashed Augsburg by 5 goals while only conceded 2.

By and large, the more I see his analysis videos I feel that this channel is less and less reliable.
If you really want to understand what happened, you should see the football purist on CZcams.
Whatever he pointed out was actually corresponding with what I saw in the game. FMS makes it seem like Bayern had a ready solution to get the ball out everytime, when in fact is was more of a percentage tactic. They knew Barca's press was dangerous, they knew their tactic wouldn't work everytime but if you do it enough it would create just enough situations for quality players to get a goal.
Defensively their press wasn't really aggressive, they only pressed when the ball went out wide or in midfield and our left backs struggled because of that. But through the use of De Jong we beat their first press a lot of times. The problem was that as soon as we got the ball into dangerous areas the utilisation and decision making by players was really poor. Also, in order to create chances from width as Barcelona try to do, you need to have fluidity with your Interiors, winger and wingback, and Kessie and Bellerin simply didn't do that well enough leaving the only chance creation being through Dembele taking on Davies one on one. But the thing is, that worked too, Barcelona had plenty of occassions when they could have been threatening but they just didn't make good decisions or good passes. And when the situation was not good, they got nervous and hurried the passes.
The problem is less with Xavi's tactics and more about them getting across to the players. The players are not able to execute the tactics well enough and the decision making is very poor - which could indicate nervousness, lack of mentality, overall lack of quality, poor form - just about anything. Xavi's role as a coach now has to be from Tactical mastermind to also man management and ensuring the players actually perform well when the tactics put them in a good situation. Otherwise tactically you create advantages and the players just keep wasting them away (think man city last season)

This truly felt like a battle of quality. Barca has a lot of quality of course, particularly up front and in the midfield, however currently in the defense there are problems. HAving to play bellerin and Alonso with a 58 meter high line is suicidal against players of quality such as Mane. Even with Barcas front three, in particular Dembele, there is a lack of correct decision making. There were times Dembele and Phonzie were isolated in a 1v1 and Dembele actually passed him, only to make a for cross or slow down the play. I also think people forget the mental aspect of the game. I personally thought that Barcelonas hearts were not in the game from the start, which let Bayern to play to their advantages even more. If Inter had lost, I'd expect a very different game from what we got.

And Barca weren't helped by the fact that Gnabry targeted the half space on Alonso's side of defense, knowing full well he's not a natural CB. I had a chance to re-watch this match, and I see one little odd thing in Bayern's defensive block and I'm sure it was from Nagi himself since this had happened more than 3 times consecutively in this match. Still a mix of flat 4-4-2/4-1-4-1, but this time Goreztka was the temporal single pivot instead of Kimmich like we would often see. Nagelsmann must have found a good solution to cover Kimmich's awful physique that made him unable to handle the overwhelming defensive burden of a single pivot. And yes, Kimmich still had the aggression and sensitive mind to make himself a considerable threat when Bayern high-press, being higher means less danger for Bayern to face quick attacking situation. Hope he will maintain this change in the coming matches.

Who ever said Xavi was a good coach? They immediately labeled him as a Philosopher-Guardiola 2.0 who "knows" about football because he "sells" the idea of possession and "tiki taka" and the Catalan newspapers, reporters, media, and fans eat it up because it´s what Barcelona played during its best years in History. Tiki taka is dead by the way (Someone should tell Xavi). Guardiola does not play tiki taka anymore; he modified his tiki taka possession-based football at Bayern and then modified even more at City. That´s how you know a great coach (Guardiola) from a novice (Xavi). Xavi goes on and on and on about possession-based football, tiki-taka, etc. etc. and then givve excuses of the off-chance they actually play possession and lose. It´s such a weak-team mentality. There is so much innocence in Xavi´s discourse, and doesn´t even know that Tiki taka is dead. Besides, it is even more sad the fact that what Xavi´s Barcelona does during games IS NOT WHAT XAVI PREACHES: attacking spaces through speed and pace from Dembele, Raphinha, Fati; crosses to Lewandowski to head, toe-tap, fumbled goals, etc. AND IRONICALLY ENOUGH...THAT IS THE FOOTALL THAT HAS MADE HIM WIN POINTS IN LA LIGA. It´s so sad that they are trying so desperately to be MORE Cruyff/Guardiola-like than Cruyff or Guardiola themselves. They´re trash. They deserve to be in Europa League.

Barcas source of attack was to look to overload the centre which would draw in the oppositions players more narrow leaving space on the flanks where their two wingers are holding the width, the idea was to isolate the wingers one on one and look to get crosses in the box. Bayern looked to either play long to their target man and surround hik with midfielders to win the second ball or look to play in behind since they had quick wingers with lot's of space left by the oppositions high line.

One good performance from Dembele and people go crazy. We have seen time and again that Dembele is NOT suitable for Barcelona. Other than pace and a few successful dribbles once in a while, he doesn't bring anything to the game. A good opposition will easily pocket him.
Kessie hasn't played in the last 2-3 games and Xavi starts him against Bayern. He sent Nico out on loan who was a regular last season. We have 5 CBs and he chooses to start a LB against Bayern ffs. I'm afraid we have another Gerrard/Lampard in the making. I hope Erik ten Hag gets sacked soon so we can get him.

    • @HuanTheIntelligent

I think Kessie is the only option to play if Xavi plans to use 4 midfielders since Gavi was injured, it's not good to risk him to start in intense game. And for CB, 2 out of 5 CBs injured, and the remainings are Eric Garcia and Pique. After recent disasters, I think it would be normal for Xavi to show less confidence in them. So for defense line, Xavi quite out of options.

Against quality defense Barca will struggle to get a shot on target. On turnover La Liga teams struggle to get the high ball to their strikers in a good spot. Even if by luck it falls, there are no quality strikers to score these. But if there is a quality striker and midfielder combination, Barca will concede on most turnovers.

Need a Napoli style dynamism for a modern elite team. Meaning not biased to any one philosophy. Defend well as necessary and also attacking in a swarm with highly athletic and technical players.

Nah man, Barca is to proud to park the bus and run counters. Bayern wants to dominate too but sometimes it is better to run counters with fast players like Sane, Mane, Gnabry or Musiala.

Why would flick even want to go to Barca? He is the coach of the german national Team which was his main goal for his coaching career, I really doubt that we will see him in club football anytime soon
