Matchday Two of the Champions League group stages saw Robert Lewandowski return to Bavaria to take on his old club Bayern Munich.
For the first half it looked like he was going to come away with all three points, but after a half-time tactical tweak from Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern Munich were able to run out 2-0 winners. Jon Mackenzie explains what the tweak was and how it impacted the game.

Goretzka also brought so much physical presence and did well to fill the space that was caused by the new approach of Bayern
Sabitzer wasn’t terrible but I thought goretzka was a clear substitution, and once he came on he changed the game massively
@@Otoskire Goretzka has to stay healthy somehow. Bayern has a lot of attacking talent. But he is the key to Bayern going far. Great box to box and can score when it matters.
I agree, I was really surprised they didn’t mention him at all. Bayern looked confident and collected with him playing on the pitch. Furthermore the first goal came from his shot being cleared and the resulting corner. Adding to that it was a great shot requiring a great save. Sabitzer by comparison was falling over himself in the first half and could not keep up with the pace of the game.
Goretzka vs Pedri and Gavi is like men vs boys
Sabitzer is better defensively covering the midfield that is why he started. The fear of getting a red card after the early yellow meant took him out of the game.
That Müller movement was so classic, pulled both CB to his direction, making space for his teammates to attack.
When he said 2 things changed for Bayern in 2nd half, I was expecting one to be substitution of Goretzka. But he didn’t, and there was no mention of him at all. That was very surprising. Very good analysis 🧐 👏🏽👏🏽
Barcelona had so many chances in the 1st half to kill the game. Bayern were sloppy and could not retain the ball at all. Sabitzer was especially poor. However like all champion sides, they held on and then had a far better second half.
I don't think Marcel Sabitizer was poor...but he is not a defensive 6 or classic holding midfielder. He is a technical deep playmaker, an organizer.
Leon Goretzka is more the Lothar Matthäus type box to box 8...but his presence alone can make a difference.
I think Nagelsman didn't expect Barca to choose the central midfield as "battlefield" and realized pretty fast that Sabitizer was not necessarily poor but not the right strategic option.
That's why I keep saying we need a darn Javi Martinez type defensive midfielder...more than a classic striker.
I also believe that de Ligt would make a great "Vorstopper" infront of Hernandez/Pavard when we are dealing with teams that try to smuggle the ball thru the center.
@@Raydensheraj Sabitzer is not a technical player nor a good playmaker. He simply doesn't belong in a starting 11 at this level. Bayern started with a physically ordinary and technically inferior midfield with Muller, Kimmich and Sabitzer. And Xavi made the same dumb choice because Busquets is rather static while Gavi is effort that can't cope half as good as Pedri.
@@stnbch3025 definitely i playing alonso and busquets was such a terrible mistake I'm genuinely so shocked at how Barcelona never went for full backs this season they bottled mazraoui deal who they could have gotten for free and there are 1000 better left backs than Marcos Alonso out of all the people
@@theeuropeanb7637 Alonso his defensive positioning is miles ahead of Alba and he wins duels Alba at least 4 out of 5 loses while Alonso his passing technique is better. It's Alba that is an insanely overrated player. Defensively the back looked much much much better than in the last 4-5 years. It's the midfield that still can't defensively create a tempo.
It was Davies Barca had trouble with and Raphinha was really bad on both sides defensively.
@@stnbch3025 Busquets and Gavi had great individual performances yesterday, stop the bs
This guy is a great addition to the Tifo team. Love his videos!
I agree.
Another game changer was Mazraoui in the first half. Barca knocked pavard out in the first minutes. He continued to play for a time but made many mistakes after that. Which lead to counter attacks and the many chances Lewandowski had in the first 35 minutes. We are lucky that we have Neuer :) Later in the first half pavard couldn’t play anymore. So mazroui came and played his best game so far for Bayern. After that Lewandowski had no big chance anymore. Upa was to strong today
But props to Barca who played a strong and interesting game! These are the games we Fans wanna see. Pedri and Musiala were great! The future looks bright for both clubs
Bayern is in a bad form currently and therefore I’m just so happy that we managed to win this game against barca which was in top form the last weeks. But I’m so disappointed in Mane. Couldn’t make anything worthy. But I guess he needs some time.
Upa, Goretzka and Mazraoui were incredible yesterday. The rest of the team were also very good. Only Pavard, Sabitser and Mané were a little off
@@ExplorerOfWorlds- yea poor pavard, Sabitzer wasn’t as good as in the games before and Mané was a complete blackout
Alphonso Davies pace is unmatchable by barca defenders note to mention araujo had handled vini jr perfectly well...!!!
Thought Davies had a solid game too
Araujo played as CB most times...
I think xavi will put araujo to mark Davis in camp nou and kounde as cb
Davies never got beyond the defense much. It was especially Raphinha he owned.
Xavi had better strategy and tactic in this match especially in the first half, Barca got quite a lot of chance to score but didn't manage to.
on other hand Bayern's finishing is lethal and manage to scored.
Puzzled by the Sane goal, I studied a highlight video. For some reason, Busquets is leading the press and Gavi fails to cover his zone in front of the CBs. It is this space that Musiala dribbles into before threading a pass for Sane to run onto. Had Busquets occupied his customary position, or had Gavi recognised that he needed to take up Busquets' role, Musiala would have been closed down before he had a chance to make this play.
💯💯💯
Müller made so much space in that scene
Nothing wrong with Xavi tactics, he did amazing, it's just Barca was just so wasteful, it's like their first La Liga game, the difference of course, this time it's Bayern, they will punished you if you are so wasteful.
Bayern: we only need 45 mins to beat Barca
Kudos to Bayern for being clinical when we weren't
And for the first time in ages I can finally say I'm looking forward to the return fixture XD
i'll remember you
That didn't go too well

The fact that he didn't mentioned Goretzka 👀
Great Video. Such clear explanations and very well structured. Exciting game with great tactical adaptations.
These videos are so well made. Thank you for the content! Really fascinating breakdown that makes you truly appreciate the tactical creativity of football.
What changed the match was barca having a lapsus of 5 minutes that Bayern took advtange of, as simple as that. Barca relaxed for a moment and they paid the price.
Love the tactics breakdowns!
Now we just need to start winning games in our own league

@@daercelebrod good competition over there
@@Juiced_Lemons Barca have the atleti, real Madrid, sevilla, sociedad and Villarreal to compete against. the only real competition in the bundesliga is Bayern vs dortmund and dortmund have always been the second best team in that match. leipzig offer little competition and Leverkuessen are inconsistent. all in all, bundesliga is 1 horse race for Bayern, partly due to their ability but more due to the lack of their opponents ability
@@daercelebrod wrong
@@daercelebrod You are wrong try to see Bayern va Borussia Monchengladbach. Bayern can barely win against that team.
Bayern have won nine of their 12 Champions League games against Barcelona (D1 L2), including each of the last five in a row.
The six-time winners have also won their last 12 group games at home, and have equalled Real Madrid's record of 30 straight group wins.
Sane scored his sixth competitive goal of the season, and second in as many Champions League games.
Müller, celebrating his 33th birthday on the day of the game, has scored eight goals in eight Champions League appearances against Barcelona, which is three more than anyone has ever scored against the Catalans in the competition.
Barcelona’s nine Champions League defeats to Bayern are more than twice as many as they have lost against any other opponent (four vs. AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea).
the sweater is cool
It really is!!
The content on this channel is really top notch, and I bring this up not as a terrible negative but as a fan that thinks it would improve the quality tenfold. Especially because there's vocal analysis, but it would improve the videos a ton to invest in a dynamic mic / generally less bass boosted mics vs. a clip on. Could definitely improve audio clarity whilst not picking up the background noise of your physical movement that much.
Love your sweater Jon!!!!
This was a great watch and a good analysis of the game.
Kudos to Naglesmaan and his boys for converting a couple of their chances. We were made to rue being wasteful.
Considering how far off we were just a season ago to give Bayern a good run today shows were going in the right direction.
At the top, tiny margins and brief moments decide matches on the back of numerous hours of prep and repetition. Hopefully Xavi and our boys are able to fine tune things.
Selling your clubs future for quick success is not a step in the right direction
@@janarichter7928 how did we sell the future?
@@janarichter7928 thanks for your great business insight and concern!
@@janarichter7928 please explain
I really hate how your club deals with getting shut out. Especially with having Lewandowski. It already happened twice in 8 games this season. Bayern didn’t get shut out in the UCL for 30 games straight until the Villareal 0-0. In the Bundesliga they are on a streak of 87 games, back then it was a Leipzig game even before the pandemic. Xavi is out there praising his boys how good they played. I haven’t heard a single person talking about how atrocious Pedri was in front of goal. He turned 0.68 xG into 0.04 xGOT. Wtf lol. Bayern as a team had 1.58xG and 2.37xGOT. They actually force the keeper to make saves, rather than Barca‘s 0.79xGOT.
I mean it‘s probably gonna be enough for Inter, but if you wanna win titles this season your team really has a long way to go and it doesn’t look like Xavi and his team has the mentality to keep striving after improvement.
Excellent...thank you so much
It's interesting that Xavi emphasized in the pre-match interview, that they're not doing a man-marking system and have a zonal approach... Only to then go on and play their most man-to-man marking approach so far.
never let them know your next move🤣🤣🤣
What was Xavi supposed to do reveal his tactics before the game ?
I also belive the pressing in the middle lane is where we see a fall off the most as busquets and pedri tire, i feel a fresher set of legs might of been able to keep up the intensity xavi was looking to maintian in the second half.
Yeah, I agree
Kessie and Dejong should have come on much sooner for Busi and Pedri/Gavi
Barca exerted too much energy on the press during the first half. Had they scored any of their 3 clear chances, they would have been able to keep the ball 2nd half with less energy. It was gamble that almost won
💯
Yes, nobody mentioned this enough. To be able to press Bayern like Barca did in the first half would require a lot of stamina. And that's probably the reason why the pressing and concentration from Barca is down in the second half, while at the same time Bayern introduced Goretzka. Barca probably started to lose confidence as well, having missed those big chances in the first half, especially from their ultimate weapon, Lewy.
What a fast turnaround
Nice sweater!
love your sweater
Seeing Muller as striker or false 9 with Musiala....😃👌
I'm so happy Barca need a humbling
Great video
Jon tell us where you got the JFA sweater 👀
Well done Bayern in the second half but Barca should’ve been out of sight with all those chances, not to mention the blatant penalty.
I think the contact started from outside the box. In which case, VAR couldn’t have intervened.
They were missing all the match, and at the ending minutes gave up
@@DPAE-xc4ph Clear penalty tbh
@@DPAE-xc4ph Agreed, it started outside the box and Davies does touch the ball first, no penalty.
Bayern Ripping off the lovechild of UEFA? HAHA no.
Bayern look really strong this season. The addition of Mané brought their collective game to another level, Naggelsman further developed his tatics, Musiala continues his incredible rise, and players like Upamecano and Sabitzer are much more adapted. Not to mention the great bussiness they did last window. They are the favourites to win the Champions League this season, alongside Man City in my opinion.
This season Sabitzer has stepped up and looked good for most games, until today, I think he was the worst Bayern player in the first half, and with the Goretzka sub at half time the team completely dominated midfield.
Real Madrid should ALWAYS be in the favorite list. But Bayern München has a certain team dynamic I haven't seen since Jupp Heynckes all winning team...plus our offense is incredibly unpredictable. On a good day a Thomas Müller, Sadio Mane, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala or Serge Gnabry can decide a game. Kimmich is world class, Leon Goretzka is a modern Lothar Matthäus, Gravenberch is a deep playmaker and Sabitizer organizes with intelligence and an eye for his teammates. Davies is a world class left back, then Hernandez who is one of the ten best center backs on the planet, de Ligt who obviously can become massively important, Upamecano with his physical strength, Benjamin Pavard who also can play incredible passes and is an defense all-rounder....this is a great team. Mazraoui played great today, fast, technically gifted. Then there still is Mathys Tel and the team player and somewhat most liked in the team Choupo...and Manuel Neuer still remains in a league of his own.
This team can really accomplish great things.... weaknesses? I think a classic 6 or a defensive holding midfielder infront of the center backs would really make a big difference in games like this one. And a classic striker would definitely help in certain games...not sure if Tel and Choupo are enough....
A fit and in form Goretzka is needed to go far in CL. Let's hope. His box to Box work and goal scoring ability is needed. Sabitzer is not at his level and is only a fill in.
@@Raydensheraj Bayern have great depth in their squad, that's one of their main strengths indeed. In relation to the weaknesses you listed, i think Kimmich can be the 6 when needed, but there's not a true number 9 in the squad since Lewa left. Bayern may find themselves in the same situation City was before the arrival of Haaland: Missing a player capable of scoring the goals no matter how.
Mane completely ghosted this game and muller lacked a lot of confidence. Sane was our only real threat and the chemistry between the front four just wasn’t good enough. I hope we can do better in the future because it’s clear that we can.
Mazraoui ❤
Great jumper 👌
What app do ye use for the tactical analysis
While i do think that you explained very well, I think that the high balls from Ter stegen to the outside midfielders whenever bayern pressed in the first half didn’t get enough recognition. They annihilated the pressing structures of the german attackers and were why barca seemed so much better imho

Wouldn't Harry Kane, who is being rumoured a lot as a target for Bayern next summer, make a lot of sense in counteracting a system like Barcelona's with his aerial presence picking up all those long balls that Neuer was forced to play?
Kane could also pick up a lot of slack in linkup play, seems like a great fit.

@@simsvmusic think he would do fine
Coman is still our best option though.
Different game but what is it about Thiago Alicantara that makes Liverpool so much better when he plays?
Alcantara not ali
Creativity in the middle. He is a player that has a varied range and style of passing, can dribble, can progress the ball and has incredible work rate. Without him, Liverpool are much more previsible. He has a similar role to that of Wijnaldum, with the exception that Thiago doesn't get as much into the box.
he's a passing machine, equipped with enormous playing-intelligence. Knows how to create spaces and dangerous attacking opportunities
Progressive and amazing passing vision which they lack within the midfield and which is why I think trent should be experimented in the midfield as a option there since the defensive rb isn’t looking too too good
If any team has prime gareth bale, pressing them won't work
bayern were the worst ive seen them for a long time in the first half. wasnt that barca were outplaying them, they were just missplacing passes, looked slow, no pace/urgency. the subs were made and after the first goal they perked up an outclassed barca even at 60/70%
They were terrible because of Barca’s pressing and Barca have the quality. Stop being dumb and give credit where it’s due. Bayern never let anyone have the ball, Barca are just better at having it. Watch games instead of seeing highlights, kid.
@@PadmeGaveMeHIV i agree but having goretzka at the start or even coman would have change it a bit. N Mane still hasn't arrived at bayern yet. He hardly did anything in the past 4 or 5 matches...

Why did barca drop press when it was working
Energy, mentality, new tactics… there could be many reasons
Our midfielders got tired and fresh legs were not brought in sooner. Kessie should have replaced Busi while Dejong should have come on sooner than he did.
So why did Barca stop pressing?
They were tired I guess and Bayern took good advantage of that.
Fresh legs should have been brought in much sooner, especially in the midfield. Dejong and Kessie would have helped maintain that press if they came on sooner.

Barcelona are selling their future and not for a particularly effective present. It has a feel of desperation rather than assertion. How much more of their soul will they sell when this group of fairly incoherent players are too old?
Giving up 50 million euros per season when you basically earn 800 million euros per season on average isn't selling your future, and have you ever studied finances? Because if you had you would know that they got a good deal

Do you understand that long before 25 years, all of the money they have spent now will be retired and worthless? Do you know that selling off long term income for a gamble on short term success is not wise? Do you understand that if these players fail to bring success that the money will be lost in champions league failure long before these players even retire? Do you understand that you could easily have done some research and based your argument on facts and knowledge instead of rudely asking if I understood finance? How is debt instead of income a good deal? At what point has it been prudent to pay interest instead of having 100% of your income? For a €320m loan what do you think they will pay back?
