Hope you guys enjoy the beginning of the INSIDE OUTTAKES! I had a lot of fun watching it today and am excited to share with you over the next few days.
A few thoughts I had while editing this bit:
The looming sort of chorus-y sound in Bezos III reminded me of hymns or something of that sort that you would sing to worship a God which speaks volumes of his status as a human and how much power he has.
Does Bo wish he has a daughter in the future? Doing the bare minimum to get by, constantly being bored, and distracting himself with mundane things like drawing a dog in the shower or hobbies like crochet.
    What do you guys think?

My read on the future lyrics is that he's really depressed in his current situation, so he spends his timing dreaming of a future that's better.. one where he gets woken up in the morning by his daughter. Can't handle living in the present, so he lives (mentally) in "the future"

I really like The Future but I can see why it got axed from the final cut. It’s using the melody of Problematic, the visuals of All Eyes On Me, and the message of That Funny Feeling and all three of those songs did their respective things better than The Future so it’s redundant in the end. I’m glad we have it now, but I get why it wasn’t used!

It also has the same story as 'shit'
"Wake up at 11:30, feeling like a bag of shit"
"Wake up in the morning at a quarter 10"
"Are you feeling what I'm feeling? I haven't had a shower in the last nine days"
"Make it to the shower at a quarter to 1, this bottle shampoos and conditions it's a two-for-one"

Love the Outtakes, as they give a bit more "inside" knowledge to Bo's creative process and how some of his work organically evolves, or how melodies and harmonies are recycled for other work (some of the best composers do this seamlessly).
The whole daughter/crochet thing makes me think that he crocheted a daughter to keep him company in his depression.

Golly, the genius of Bo is just wild, there are so many ways you can take all his stuff and not be 'wrong'
My interpretation of this is a song that was born of anxiety. So much of anxiety is "living in the future". In a sense thats sort of ultimately what Anxiety is. When you're anxious, you're living in the future. You're worried about things that will happen in the future. You are not present for the now.
This is something that resonates deeply with me personally so its no wonder I went to it first. But given Bo's public battles with Anxiety, it wouldnt surprise me if this is what he was going for.

The daughter part-it’s about two things
    1. That dissociative state where you start to ideate and fantasize just about to the point of hallucination. Here the ideation is for a perfect nuclear family and the dream of no longer being lonely ever again bc here is this little girl who will always love him
    2. A desire to disappear into the feminine, give up, go some place warm, a la the warm safe arms of all-consuming depression and retreat, something something Freud and the womb ya know
As to why be says “I’m living in the future,” that also means two things
    1. The present might be unbearable, but in the future is perfect familial happiness, a fantasy and
    2. In the future, bc we will live in the digital world, we will not have to actually do things, we can do them virtually, just like he’s living virtually, in his head, for this fictional daughter, doesn’t even matter if she really exists, bc we are past needing connection with sentient beings, we can connect with characters, AI, celebrities, sky’s the limit. Which is hopeful and beautiful until you really think about it, at which point it’s incredibly dystopian

    • @neilkristjansson8477
      @neilkristjansson8477 Pƙed 2 lety +2

This is a great analyses and I agree with everything you've said, but I want to add a 3rd interpretation of the "I'm living in the future" line.
On one hand I lean heavily on your 2nd point (where "the future" we got isn't what we were promised as kids and is essentially just a boring, mundane dystopia), but on another I feel like it's sort of in the same vein as NIN's "Every Day is Exactly the Same". Because of the nature of his depression and the nature of quarantining for an undetermined amount of time, he basically knows what he's going to deal with tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. So since every day has been the same, he has no reason to think it won't be the same going forward. Which, then I guess is where your 1st point comes in -- sort of like "today sucks, I know it'll be the same tomorrow, so I'll live in *my* idealized tomorrow instead."
This song is legitimately so underrated. It sounds super simple and straightforward but it's got so much to look at in such a short amount of time.

If he had the *foresight* to record The Future to include in the Outtakes. But yeah, he probably just had a backlog of songs that were cut, and were edited out because they didn't fit into the narrative of the thing. I do wonder where he would have put this, if it remained, because it's a bit too off on its own. Makes sense to open with it in the Outtakes though!

I'm sure I'm not the first to mention it, but if you're looking for ideas, there's an Australian musician/comedian called Tim Minchin whose songs would be very much up your alley if you enjoy Bo. Accomplished comedian, brilliant musician, and mixes some serious topics with humor. Some good starting songs would be 'Prejudice', 'Lullaby' or 'If I didn't have you (Full uncut version)'. If you do happen to check some of his stuff out and enjoy it, there's about a dozen or two other songs of his in the same style I could suggest.
Regardless though, I'm happy you're well, and back to it. Much love!

Viewing The Future in the context we see it does have an Inception feel. I don’t think it was planned to be part of Outtakes. The song could have an entirely different feel in another context. (Say for example, following 30, and simply relating to the aging process.) it’s cool that there are tiny pieces of other songs interspersed throughout it.

I noticed that as well as having the same flow as Problematic, the lyrics and their story is similar to 'shit' where he sings about waking up at a late time, realises where he is and feels shit "is this real? oh right it's this again" "wake up at 11:30, feeling like a bag of shit".
He also mentions a shower in both "I haven't had a shower in the last 9 days" "make it to the shower at a quarter to 1".
He also sings about how he wallows in how shitty he feels "staring at the ceiling and waiting for this feeling to go away" "I'll bother getting better when I bother getting dressed"
I think shit is Future but about depression instead of anxiety and a metaphor mentioned in another comment about the 2-for-1 shampoo referencing how depression and anxiety often go hand in hand. I really like both songs and Bo :)
