The Viltrox 23mm is a fast prime lens for mirrorless aps-c cameras.
On top of that, it's got STM auto focus and an appealing price.
In this video we're looking at this little lens from a videographers standpoint.
Is it sharp enough, is the Auto focus good? And btw, how's that bokeh?
The Viltrox 23mm f1.4 is available with a number of different mounts including:
* Canon M - Canon M50, M50 mkII and Canon M6
* Sony E - Sony A6400, A6600 and more
* Nikon Z - Nikon Z50
* Fujifilm X - Fujifilm S-X10, X-T3, X-T4 and all other Fuji aps-c cameras with interchangeable
lenses.
Hilarious! Naturally comedic and hugely informative, a winning combination. Thanks mate.
😀 Thank you
I didn't know there was a Mark 2 version, so that was helpful. Thank you very much.
This was exactly the question I had for the lens, the video side of things. Cheers.
That's great!
I'm glad you found the video and I hope it answered your questions?
Got one and love it. I find myself using it and my Sony 18-105mm most of the time. I have 4 or 5 other lenses, but hardly ever use them for video. Cheers -- Good informative video.
Sweet! Same here, it's basically glued to my camera. Was thinking about getting an e-mount version too for same reasons
@@thomasfransson Sounds like a plan!
@@thomasfransson This was the first video I maade with it czcams.com/video/nkvwYshY_2I/video.html -- I shot it with an a5100 in very low light ... Saigon Vietnam

Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing
I think viltrox are good for photos but maybe for video it’s better go safe with fujinon ones, the autofocus looks smoother and almost never miss the focus
The problem with fujinon glass is pretty much just that ;)
They're great optically. But use older and less smooth AF motors. Most of them also suffer from pretty heavy focus breathing. Even the new primes that a lot of us video shooters were looking forward to.
So that's generally why most video first shooters still prefer to adapt or use 3rd party lenses for video. I've also found this to be the case and have had better results with adapted and 3rd party lenses.
But as always, it comes down to what you shoot the most, and what lens that gives you the results you're looking for.
@@thomasfransson true, i was thinking to start doing more videos, and I’m not sure what to get i was thinking about the 16-55, or do a series of primes like 13, 33 (which i own already), 75, also because i would use these primes for photos too. What do you think, what would you suggest me?
I’m considering buying this for my streaming on Twitch. I’m still stuck with the xt20 and didn’t have time to give it an upgrade yet. Now it’s out of the closet, I’m checking out some lenses. Great content!
Oh, that sounds like a perfect lens for that!
Thank you.
@@thomasfransson I’m using it as an all around making cinematic videos and ofcourse, the stream. I did consider the 35mm but I was advised the camera would be 10 feet away lol. Thanks again! Insta sub and like! 🤩
@@darksprout1106 Curious how this worked out for you. I'm considering getting the same lens for shooting CZcams videos in a fairly small office. Thanks!
hey how do u use it for streaming?
Well Done!! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome quality content here. More power to you Sir. New sub here
The main reason I dislike this lens is the CA and fringing.
What do you think, new Viltrox 23 f1.4 for 300 or new (old version) Fujinon 23 f1.4 for 500?
My research told me Viltrox. There a lot of still shooters complaining about CA on this lens. But I haven't really seen much of it. And it's true that it's less of an issue when used for video.
But the main reason for me picking this lens in the smoother AF and better performance in terms of lens breathing and these sort of things.
I don't know what you're planning on using your lens for. But there's a pretty clear line between Fujifilm still vs. Video shooters when it comes to what lenses to use ;)
@@thomasfransson Thanks Thomas. I plan to use the lens for video and stills. :) The CA is really bad in those examples seen online, and this is what puts me off, Fujinon has it also but maybe a little bit better controlled.
It can be fixed in photos, however in videos not so sure how feasible will be, interesting you find it less of a problem for videos, I suppose because of less resolution.
If Fujinon 23mm f1.4 video AF is something like the 56mm f1.2, well this is unusable really. :)
Not sure where to put my workflow, I will shoot stills and video, both with the AF for video sometimes and manual maybe more for some serious work. CA is important to me as this can make a good lens look like a cheap one, fringing is really ugly.
A lot of choices for 23mm, however nothing "perfect" except the new Fujinon optically, but it is so expensive, at least for how much I want to pay now.
@@BojanBojovic What did you end up getting?
@@thomasfransson I got the Viltrox. It was a compromise as always, but somehow it seemed like a better option.
First, Fujinon is at least 200 more expensive. Second, Fujinon back focuses at closer distances by rule so this was the major reason why I decided to go with the Viltrox as it can not be fixed, while vignetting and CA can be addressed at some extent later.
Fujinon is optically better, but just marginally.
Overall it is an affordable lens, not that bad, not great, but for the money it is totally acceptable.
👍👍
Thank you for the review 🙏
Nice video. Certainly Viltrox didn’t update this lens just to change the lettering. Any other differences we should know about? Thanks
Biggest problem was that the mkI could damage some camera models. So mkII would be a safer bet and probably be easier to sell if you switch system.
@@thomasfransson ❤️
Anything you want me to include in a FOLLOW-UP VIDEO? 🤔
In this lense if we will shoot the video the vignetted will notice in the video from sides corner ?
Any specific shot in the video you're referring to?
These fast primes and even slower ones always have some degree of vignetting when shooting wide open. Be it Sigma, Tamron or Viltrox but in my opinion it's rarely an issue/visible in real life. I don't think I've ever stopped down a lens because of noticeable vignetting in a shot. Even if you sometimes can see a difference on location if you do. But it very much depends on the shot.
I hope that answers your question.
@@thomasfransson so in also sigma we can notice Vignettes sometimes?
Sure, most of these faster primes have a bit of vignetting when shooting wide open.
What gimbal are you using for the X-T4? Thank you so much for the review :)
Hi Val!
The one I use the most is the Weebill S.
It's by far my favorite because of the form factor and size.
@@thomasfransson thank you so much!
Thanks❤
Very nicely presented, thanks alot
Thank you. So glad you liked it
@@thomasfransson but can I ask you a question that if I have option to buy older version xf 23mm f1.4 R in used or viltrox 23mm f1.4 new, which one would you recommend considering overall performer. Thanks again
hi im thinking of getting either the 33 or 23mm f1.4. which do you think would a better choice to pair with my 18mmf2 fuji lens?
I think there's difference enough to consider the 23mm The 33mm will obviously be the biggest leap up from that 18mm and will offer slightly better subject separation because of the extra length.
For traveling I enjoy the 23mm f1.4 as a 35mm equivalent, it's a classic focal length for photojournalism and will give you pretty true to life results.
The 33mm will be similar to a 50mm f2.0 on a full frame and that's a great lens for portraits, closeups and a bit more open spaces if you want to be able to fit more/bigger subjects in frame.
So it really comes down to how, what and where you shoot.
Here's a video from a trip where I used the 23mmf1.4 forstills and video. It'll give you a decent idea of how it works for portraits, landscapes and so forth

thank you for this review
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful!
I'm lookin for the almost perfectly lens to video. I'm not find it because all have focus breathing. (fuji, viltrox, sigma, meike, samyang, yongnuo) I work with viltrox 56 mostly and i like it but this lens is not perfect in this deital, but it's ok. Which one lens is the best for video on fuji cameras where the focus breathing is minimal. Thank You :)
Most Viltrox lenses have very little focus breathing compared to the competition. I haven't tried the old f1.4 56mm but the new 56 f1.7 is alright in this department. But this 23 is by far my favorite. I have a second video on it with more examples
@@thomasfransson Thank you very much! Before that I had a Sigma 18-50, but I didn't shoot video then. Unfortunately, 2.8 is not enough for me in most situations, but... the choice is difficult... viltrox 23mm or sigma 18-50. The Viltrox 1.4 is very good, but louder and only 23mm, the sigma is only 2.8 but quiet + 18-50. Which one would be better for a video?
Ok, well ive never had any problems with it being loud. I think I have a video on that. How loud is the... or something.
Don't know what camera you use and what focal lengths you require but there's also 33mm f1.4 primes and then there's the 18-35 if you get an adapter
@@thomasfransson Yes, I saw that video. I have a Fuji x-t3. I am looking for a lens between 23-35 mm. I think I will buy viltrox 23. Thank you for the information! :)
I'm sure you'll enjoy it
great video thank you ❤❤
Thank you, glad to hear.
What firmware version do you have? Autofocus on my 23mm viltrox is fast and reactive but not that smooth. It is true that I have the version with gold letters.
I updated it about four weeks ago. So it's the one available on their website at that time.
What camera are you using it with?
@@thomasfransson thanks!!!! Fuji x-t3.
@@Thjfizo Not sure if it's because of the lens model or firmware.
On these tests had my AF-C set at: Tacking speed +2
Sensitivity 0
It's what I use on my Sigma 18-35 and I'm quite happy with it. Hope you'll be able to get yours dialed in.
@@thomasfransson I updated the lens and the focus has improved a lot. Before I had a big problem. The lens focused very fast but it was a very nervous focus that would jump. It also didn't respond well to focus mode settings. He changed the settings to slow down the focus and make the roll focus look nicer, but the lens did it the way it wanted. I have the goal since launch and never updated because I am a little scared of updates. Viltrox has done a great job with this lens and improving its algorithms to work better with Fuji. Very surprised with the brand. I have also updated the 85 and the 33mm which I also have and they have improved although I think it does not work as well as the 23mm does. Thanks for the video I was encouraged to update and I am very happy. It is like having a new lens. Thank you! Sorry for my English!!
@@Thjfizo That great!
So glad you managed to fix it!
I agree with you, the performance of this lens really surprised me in a good way.
I'm curious about the 85mm. I hear mixed reviews. Mainly problems with Chromatic aberration. What's your experience?
Genio! Muchas gracias
Thank you
Excelente! Funciona na 250D?
Sadly no, this is to my knowledge only available for mirrorless cameras.
Sir may I ask what gimbal did you use? Thanks
Hi! I used the Weebil S. I find that it works great with these cameras and lens combos. And the gimbal itself is very compact and lightweight.
@@thomasfransson thank you. More power to you and your channel. God bless your family. Sub!
Hi Thomas! My Viltrox has a noisy af motor is this normal?
Is it a MKI or MKII?
My only experience is with the MKII 23mm f1.4 and the one I have is not very noisy. It's not as quiet as some Canon STM lenses. But definitely not the worst lens I have.
Have you updated the lens firmware?
And are you using an external microphone? An external microphone will pick up less of the AF motor.
Sorry that's all the advice I can give you.
Maybe bring it into a camera store or find someone local that have the same lens so you can compare and see if your lens is more noisy or if it's the same.
Whats the camera your testing with😄?
Sorry maybe I forgot to mention that in the video. It's a Fujifilm X-T4.
Thank you for asking me, I will try to get better at including those details in the future. ;)
Good presentation 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼, subsrcibed
Thank you ❤
are you still usint it in 2023?
I am, it's used for the main angle (a-cam) in my studio and pretty much everything else I shoot on my Fujifilm these days.
Including travel, events and other gigs.
Sometimes I'll switch it up with a 50mm tog make it easier to cut between takes.
I am using the kit lens (18-55mm) for events and i find it too wide at 18mm and i also find myself using ISO 3200 quite often, probably will sell the kit lens and buy this viltrox@@thomasfransson
Sorry for getting back so late on this. Did you get the 23mm?
The only thing I can say is that i sometimes wish I had an even wider lens for events when it's crowded and space is tight. But the f1.4 is super clutch and will make life easier in terms of noise and shutter speed
First :)
Yes you are!👊
