  • Hello everyone! Today I'm discussing the coolest and most dangerous and not overly theatrical character #asongoficeandfire, Gerold Dayne. He wasn't in Game of Thrones, but it seems like he'll have an important role in the Winds of Winter.
    Be sure to subscribe if you enjoyed this video! What do you think? Is there anything I missed? What do you think of #houseofthedragon so far? More #asoiaf content is on the way!
    Thank you all for watching, I'll be back with more theories next week! Art in the thumbnail is by Bella Bergolts (Darkstar art) and Eddie Mendoza (Starfall art). Character art in this video is by TheMico!

    I think Darkstar is easy to make fun of because other edgy characters like Euron or Daemon have real accomplishments to back up their claims of badassery. Euron, at least, has his creepy crew and a magic horn to suggest that he really has been places few people have been and is genuinely unhinged. Daemon was famed as one of the last great Targaryen warriors to ride a dragon. Darkstar just attacks a little girl and runs away after spouting nonsense about being "of the night" like he's freaking Batman. Maybe if he had done some things to back up the perception GRRM was going for, then he wouldn't come off as a poser.

    I think a lot of his edginess stems from reading his quotes out of context. I'm not saying he's not an edgelord but the famous "I am of the night" quote is clearly a joke to Myrcella when they were introduced to eachother and Myrcella was being courteous and recognizing the fame of Arthur Dayne and asking whether Gerold was the sword of the morning. I mean it's not like he is barging in to conversations with his epic one-liners.

    But I don't think that'll be the case, for multiple reasons but mainly because I feel like if George was going that route, he'd make Gerold look more like how Jon does, but just with Silver hair instead of Black hair, as well as write him more as a dark reflection/opposite parallel to Jon.

    "Why is that my cousin is the only Dayne that anyone remembers?" is actually a funny line though. I don't think Doran Martell is one to try to orchestrate an attack on a little girl under his care. And Areo Hotah is a trusted companion to Doran --- why would he send him off after Darkstar?
    The Camera That Rides having three chapters makes me think there will be something more than Darkstar in his chapters. Interestingly, the next closet POV character would be Sam in Oldtown, and we know Obara is joining Areo Hotah. Obara knows that Alleras is Sarella. Recall that Sam told *everything* to Sarella, all of stuff about the Others, and Sarella knows about the dragons as well. I think more like that Darkstar flees again (perhaps a recurring theme for this character), joining the Dornish armies of Lord Yronwood and Fowler that may/will help Aegon and the Golden Company. After all, if Dorne is at war with the Lannisters, why wouldn't they want them? I think him being a Kingsguard member, paralleling his cousin, with Dawn in toe seems like a relevant outcome for this character.

  • @johnnye87
    @johnnye87 Před 24 dny +5

    Darkstar as a catspaw has the same vibe as Lyn Corbray being the agent of Littlefinger. The Dornish plot also demonstrates why it's so crucial to have plausibly deniable false-flag operators - their entire vendetta against Tywin is rooted in the fact that everyone knows Gregor Clegane acts on his orders. Clegane would be the PERFECT "hey you can't expect me to control that guy, he's wild" agent, except that Tywin makes such a huge show of how he crushes all disloyalty that he can't possibly make that excuse ring true.

    Gerold's entire... everything... plays very well into my thesis that Arthur Dayne also wasn't shit, actually, and Jaime's rose-tinted memories of him are very much similar to a kid who peaked in high school dickriding his football coach who was nice to him before dying in drunk driving accident. Ned and Howland are very cool and sexy and valid for stuffing Arthur full of poison darts and stabbing him in the back or whatever else "dishonorable" thing they did at the Tower Of Backstory. Hope Gerold end up like that also. Ashara and Little Ned are the only valid Daynes.

    Yes, "Aquiline" sounds like "Aqua + Line"(aka "The Roman Nose"). Means lit has a prominent ridge that then "bend"/turns downward a bit(from Latin "aquillinus"/Eagle-like). Charles Dance(Tywin) is a great example as is the drawing of Darkstar you showed. A sign of "Class" and "proper breeding"(Valyrian), as it were.
    The whole "Sword of the Morning" becoming the "Sword of the Mourning" is a pun that GRRM can't resist. Makes me think that it will be used to kill one of our favorite characters, hence the "mourning" implication. Doing so would then end the Long Night and allow for the literal "morning"/"Dawn" to break. The only characters I can think of would be Dany or Jon, but that also seems a bit obvious. Maybe it's both!

    My favorite aSoI&F alternative theory is that Ser Gerold Dayne aka the Knight of High Hermitage shares the three physical traits "that bespoke the Valyrian blood" of Ser Laenor Velaryon as recognized by ArchMaester Gyldayn on page 📄 374 in "Fire and Blood": 1) Silvery-White hair 2) Aquiline nose 3) Purple eyes. Laenor Velaryon has these three Valyrian blood traits and so does Gerold Dayne curiously 🤔.
    I submit that just as Ser Laenor Velaryon was born from a royal Targaryen womb via Princess Rhaenys Targaryen . . . Ser Gerold Dayne was born from a royal Targaryen womb via Queen Rhaella Targaryen. That streak of midnight black in his Platinum head of hair is very likely to be dye ala Prince 🤴 Aegon Targaryen VI in his false identity of Young Griff with Blue hair.
    Gerold Dayne has no father or mother . . . no sisters or brothers . . . no birthday or year of exact birth rather. He could be the boy 👑 Viserys Targaryen III formerly crowned by her Grace 👑 Rhaella Targaryen at Dragonstone Castle 🏰 after the sack of King's Landing as his father the Mad King was slain by Ser Jamie Lannister.
    High Hermitage sounds like a really remote and reclusive (royal?) residence in the Red Mountains of Dorne. The word hermitage translates to "the disinherited" curiously enough 🤔. Could High Hermitage have been financed and constructed by the Lords of Tourantine at the direction of her Grace Queen Rhaella Targaryen to serve as a secret stronghold sanctuary for her last living son after the horrific slaughter of her beloved Targaryen grandbabies Princess Rhaenys and Prince Aegon VI?!? 👑 Viserys Targaryen III was the Great-great-grandson of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Lady Dyanna Dayne afterall!! Where else would her Grace turn to for help after she had been so brutally betrayed by close family friends in House Lannister but her noble cousins of House Dayne!?!
    There were certainly a good supply of proper prospects at Dragonstone village for a royal decoy to rhe newly crowned boy 👑 Viserys III as Dragonseed children were known for having Valyrian blood traits of Purple eyes and Platinum hair and some surely had Aquiline noses too. Princess Myrcella Baratheon was appointed a royal decoy in her cousin Rosamund for her security protocol down at Dorne waa she not?!? Why wouldn't King Viserys III be afforded the same precautionary protocol . . . there was mo question that he was the legitimate last living male heir to House Targaryen rather than a false Baratheon princess right!?! Targaryen royal babies have been slaughtered . . . not taken hostage . . . BUTCHERED!! What 🤯 was the likely fate of Targaryen royal boy then . . . last living son of her Grace 😭 👑 Rhaella Targaryen?!? She got him the hell out of there!!!!! 👑 Viserys III lives and may reveal himself in the epilogue of "The Winds of Winter" as he rallies the Anti-Martell Dornish nobels in a bloody coup of Sunspear while weilding the legendary sword 🗡️ "Dawn" after washing out that midnight black streak of dye from his Silvery-White scalp.

  • @Seelenverheizer

    I think the true key to our edgelord over here is the fact that GRRM was building little Ned Dayne up to wield Dawn after the 5 year skip. Then as he realised the 5 year skip is not happening Darkstar has been included and poor Ned stoped beeing mentioned in the background.
    We dont know what Ned Dayne was ment to do then likely wield Dawn at some point but i am pretty sure Darkstar is his replacement and at one point will do what little Ned was ment to do. Sure he has his own story and his involvement will the queenmaking incident but i feel confident that will be left behind for him.
    Good chance that the camara that rides will become buddy with Dankstar and go on a journey to do what GRRM needs them to do. Both of them feel very much like tools born of a narrative problem GRRM ran into to fix that problem. GRRM beeing a good writter did build them in a way like they do seem like actual characters not just as replacement and fixes and therefore they get involved into the Dorn stuff.

Doesn't seem his style to me, his whole vibe is that he doesn't want the innocent to suffer, and he seems genuinely distraught over Myrcella being hurt. But maybe t here's some wishful thinking there, I like Doran.

    I think the Euron vs Darkstar disparity that we know what Euron's done enough for the edge to be backed up.
    Euron has committed crimes against the gods themselves and seems to be getting away with it like an absolute champion.
    Darkstar failed to kill a child, and then ran away. His edgelordery isn't yet validated or surpassed by enough legitimately intimidating action.

    It's so interesting how grrm, a writer so gifted, he's made me laugh, weep, cry with joy, hate and hope; wrote a character like Gerald. We know obviously that grrm can write very fully realised, complex characters, so the inclusion of such a seemingly "basic" edgelord seems very deliberate to me. I suppose it could just be filler he busted out to meet a deadline? What game is grrm playing at?

  • @Seelenverheizer
    @Seelenverheizer Před 24 dny

    GRRM mentioning the fact someone sold the queenmakers out is a strong indication that Darkstar is actually working for Doran or at least they have a mutually beneficial partnership. Darkstar can become famous and powefull while Doran can partially cover him but also has enought stratigic deniablity for having any influence on him. Makes a lot of sense.
    To me Darkstar always felt like someone who is on his journey to becoming a badass but is trying really hard to already be a complete badass and thefore does come actually as an emo edgelord. Also this does unfortunatly date the books. Darkstar was absolutely written in a time where edgy dudes were percieved much more favorably as they are now. The series is taking so long the character archtype and audiences perspective on that changed since he first appeared on page.

LOOK at how Euron is taking ALL of the land BY river/causeways. lol I know, nobody really believes me, but all I am doing is reading the story in the books. The Daynes ARE going to be attacked by Euron. Period. Euron wants their sword. I love that you can tell what has to be coming-and it has to be right. Dark Star and Euron almost HAVE to come together in some way. And Eddric Dayne. SOMETHING HAS to happen between these 3 somehow in text going forward, regarding Dawn.

  • @NYCfrankie

    I think the issue with Darkstar is that (Arianne aside, and she already seems like an unreliable narrator on the subject of hot boys), he's the ONLY character who talks about himself in those terms. We've never heard of him before and he shows up thinking he's hot shit. Euron's a giant narcissist, but based on other characters' opinions of him and his on-page achievements, he does have something the brag about; he is, in fact, dangerous and powerful and wealthy. If Darkstar had been previously mentioned as someone Doran was respectfully wary of, or who Arys or Areo considered a worthy opponent, then we'd be cued up to think he was something special and his high opinion of himself would feel at least a little earned.
    In fact his on-page achievements *contribute* to the image of him as a paper tiger; he tries to kill a little girl and fails, then he's reported to have killed a knight when he actually didn't. Those events might be inconsequential if we already thought he was a capable warrior, but when they're all the information we have to go on, he looks incompetent and overhyped.

    I can see Darkstar stealing Dawn and joining Young Griff as his discount version of Arthur Dayne. This would Aegon look good and more legitimate? You know, recreating the lost Last Dragon Silver Prince. And whatever happens next, he might be the way of Dawn getting up North. I believe Dawn has a role to play in the Battle for the Dawn, and since Ned Dayne is too young to have it (since 5 years time skip was dropped), Martin needed another to move that plot point forward.

      @mementomori771 only if they know he stole it. We don't know how Dawn is stored and if it going missing would be quickly discovered. Also, we don't know where Ned Dayne is and that leaves Allyria as the only Dayne at Starfall. We also don't know how the sword is awarded. He could threaten Allyria into giving it to him. Plus news doesn't travel that fast in Westeros and can be supressed. If having a Dayne by Aegon's side would be good PR by Jon Con's standards, then he can be presented as Sword of the Morning. Or not. I doubt people remember what Dawn looks like, so he could be just carrying around a sheeted great sword...

  • @aprilmae274
    @aprilmae274 Před 24 dny

    These guys aren't going to kill Dark Star-they are doing this to distract and likely kill Balon. By tradition, they are the finest knights in the 7 kingdoms. Area has killed one already, but THAT one is NOT the same as Balon. Balon will be harder to kill. More difficult to sway. But the really cool underlying gig here is the eyes...in text so fark when someone had DARK eyes, they are likely purple/black. So NOW look at Varys's eyes again and Tyrion's 'black' eye. Varys's eyes are described as dark, wet and shiney. EXACTLY like Quaithe's as well. And it also reads like the really dark purple eyes are angry. Varys was ANGRY when Tyrion notices that his eyes are dark and shiney and wet looking. And in text-Dark Star is basically like a tarot card; The Star, but inverted. He is the OPPOSITE of The Star and he is likely going to be in a scene with Eddric Dayne. Who is going to hold Dawn? And who the ef are his Gerold DAYNES parents? Why does Gerold Dayne remind me of Marcelline from Adventure Time? Anyways-another thing to note in this chapter is that Doran is FULL-ON lying which is kind of unusual for him. Some of these liars follow a pattern-a set of weird rules. It reads like Doran had to be lied to FIRST in order for him to be able to freely lie in response. Doran is NOT lying so much as he is FOLLOWING Balon's/Lannister lies. Look at how carefully Doran picks his way through this entire conversation with Balon. I didn't get it in previous reads cuz Dorne was boring to me before I started LISTENING to the books. But damn man, Dorne is going to BLOW people away. Starfall in general is in danger right now, in text. Forsaken chapter-Euron is RIGHT there by Starfall and he is leaving to continue his conquest of Westeros through the coastal cities. Shite is about to get REALLY bad for Dorne, inland. Dark Stark isn't going to STEAL Dawn {the sword} he is going to SAVE it from being taken by Euron. He is at least going to try. Those other folks are going to help Gerold do this-hopefully Balon concedes and helps them, or he is going to die very soon in text.
