    • @tmtjr
      @tmtjr Před rokem +1

@@narabdela actually yes. While that seems like a lot, his top selling album sold 6.3m which ranks only 519th place overall. Moondance which is the album I'm talking about sold 3.9m which ranks it 1048th place overall. He is well loved by his fans, but many people (especially under the age of 30) don't know him other than a couple songs.

There is not a weak song on this wonderful album, Moondance. I love it as much today as when it was released in early 1970 and many of the songs still get lots of airplay on my memory sticks while I'm driving. I remember looking at the liner notes as I always did when I tore open the cellophane on a new album jacket and I recall reading about Van's wife, Janet Planet, perhaps one of the coolest names I've ever heard!

From Van's Moondance album from 1970.
This was written about an experience Van had when he was 12 years in Ireland. After a day of fishing, they stopped to ask for a drink of water at a home in the village. The man said he had stream water he could share. Five minutes after drinking it, Van said he slipped into another dimension and had a mystical experience. He said it made him appreciate nature to the fullest.
Beautiful vocals by Van, and wonderful horns and guitars make for a satisfying peaceful tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

What a profound story of an experience from his youth, I’d like to echo the other comments on this thread and thank you so much for sharing this, it’s stuff like this that makes these reaction videos so rewarding coupled with sharing the experience with those reacting to it for the first time.
Factoring in this story, it explains the deeply solemn gospel procession I’ve always detected from the tune, and it has that warm sunset daydream feeling thanks to the embellishments from the sax wherein the mystical communion is communicated so effectively.
It definitely transports the listener to another place and time, which seems to be a really rare occurrence in music to stop time in such a manner. For me, it’s most often found in songs rooted in gospel, folk, soul, and blues.
Otis Redding and Al Green are both masters of getting me to that place where it feels as if the veil of reality itself is being lifted to reveal the machinations of the universe. Steve Winwood and Greg Allman are both great examples as well.
As for female vocalists, Janis Joplin is quite adept at getting me to that place, Stevie Nicks and Laura Nyro come to mind as well.
The first time I heard Patti Smith I was experiencing something of a “perfect storm” in my life.. “Birdland” came on and hit me so hard I completely exhaled and had a short out of the body experience of astral projection where I saw myself from an elevated corner of the room that changed my life forever. I can’t even hear that song without feeling paralyzed and transported to another dimension similar to what it seems Van Morrison detailed with his experience with the water.
Thanks again for sharing such a wonderful story!

Van Morrison is a multi-instrumentalist... and he knows just what sounds blend well together, and knows which instrument's voice he wants to stand out and when. He has a definite and inspired approach to putting together the right elements to make musical bliss! And Van's vocals and lyrics fit so organically and perfectly into what he composes instrumentally. A poet, artist, and mystic for the gypsy in our soul.

Before he discovered country / jazz Van was lead singer with Them, a classic 1960s r 'n' b band, with memorable hits such as Gloria and Here Comes the Night - - creating a sound that, arguably, had a major influence on The Doors. Then he went to California and made the album Astral Weeks [backed by the Modern Jazz Quartet}- creating a sound and style that was quite unique, haunting and beautiful - much of it in a distinctive, light 6 / 8 style. The rest is history! 🐻

I think the song is just a simple childhood memory with him and his friend, Billy with water being the unifying theme of the three verses. It's an expression of the simple joy and innocence of life as seen through the eyes of a child and it's as great as any "high" he's ever had, such as lovemaking when he was older.

Had the pleasure of seeing Van Morrison at the Santa Clara County Fair Grounds (San Jose) in 1971. On the ticket with him that night was Cat Stevens. Van Morrison is not a very dynamic performer. He just basically stands there, plays his guitar and sings, but with that voice and music, you don't need to be dynamic. Those were the days.

As for Van, he's really an amazing songwriter, really a poet. Before he went solo with Brown Eyed Girl he was in a group named Them. Their (his) song Gloria is a classic classic song. Every band practicing in their parent's garage learned that song back in the 60s. In the 90s Van made the coolest version ever of that song with the late Jon Lee Hooker, a blues giant! My favorite Van Morrison song is actually from when he was a member of “Them”.
“Gloria” is awesome in its seeming simplicity but when you really start to pay attention, there’s a lot going on with the guitar riffs. You should check it out!

Van Morrison is a very deep well to tap into. He had a streak of perfect albums: Astral Weeks, His Band And The Street Choir, Moondance, St. Dominic's Preview. You can drop the needle on any song on every one of those albums, and it's an amazing tune.

I loved when she explained one of my favorite songs just as I see it. I was later in life before listening to Van (other than songs on the radio and covers). It is really amazing hearing his songs change as he ages. I remember a professor once saying one should move through his discography in order, spending two years on every album before moving on. I didn't do that, but for the richness of the albums it kind of works out that way.

I’d almost forgotten you’d done Van the man before. It seems like it’s been forever. His catalogue is huge. You should check out ‘Dweller on the Threshold’. It is very different from the ones you’ve listened to to date. It has a more uptempo pop vibe to it. It’s early ‘80s. The saxophone solo in it is spectacular.

Amber you are right, Van brings a bit of all genres to his music - rock, jazz, funk, R&B, country, folk...and if you think about it, the music of his native land - Ireland - certainly had a significant influence on country.
