  • The series Shogun just finished its first season. It's an extraordinary show that manages be authentic to the time period, entertaining for today's audience, and avoid the overly woke tropes and other issues of modern TV. Why is Shogun so good? Will there be a second season? Here's my no spoiler discussion of this mini-series. Comment with your thoughts, and check out the other videos on my channel.

If you think, the attention to detail on the costumes is impressive, get this:
The Japanese, that they speak is NOT modern day Japanese, but the period correct, ''old timey'' form of the language. ( basically, like modern day English and the Shakespearean version from the 17th century.)
Many of the Japanese actors took lessons, in order to perform their lines correctly in the old form.
And this is mostly because Hiroyuki Sanada, who is also one of the producers, demanded that the show is as historically accurate as possible.
Oh and despite the ''Shogun'' novel being historical fiction, it's based on real historical events & people.
Blackthorne for example is based on William Adams ( ''Miura Anjin''), the first Englishman to traveled to Japan, Lord Toranaga is based on Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, Lady Mariko on Lady Hosagawa Gracia, Lord Ishido on Ishida Mitsunari etc.
The book itself, by James Clavell , is very well researched and the 1980's mini-series is also worth watching. Toshiro Mifune as Lord Toranaga, I mean do I have to say more?

This is great information. I did read about Sanada’s influence as a producer and I’m happy that his demands were met. I did not know about the dialogue specifically so this is fascinating. Thanks for the comment!

@@ClearCritique how they went about writing the script is super interesting, especially for a show where in-universe the translation/interpretation is everything. bascially, the script was written in English, translated to Japanese, then sent to experts in this era of the Japanese language to correct, then given to the actors who are able to understand the dialogue but can only modify or improvise with one of the language consultants present, and then translating that accurately but with intention/slang back into English for the subtitles. some of the stuff going on in the show that doesn't come through in subtitles is wild. there are polite and impolite ways to address men and women of different ranks. in English it's all the same, but in period-specific Japanese? some of those Council of Regent scenes were absolutely 'cut a bitch' with their choice of phrasing.

Like I said elsewhere, Mariko Toda is the very incarnation of a 'strong female character' - without all the extra bs the current year activists bring into the definition. As for the show itself - I binged it in 3 days. I was captivated from start to finish. I remember watching the 80s version with great interest but this version is even better. I absolutely adored the atmosphere that felt, as you said, lived-in, real. Oh and the track as well as the blue undertone palette were magnificent throughout.

I've watched too much TV for way too long, haha. This Shogun series was some of the very best TV I ever watched, it was just beautiful. I watched most of the episodes multiple times, and found new discoveries with every viewing. Well done!!!

This show was fantastic. However, no season 2 will happen as the show told, from start to finish, the novel Shogun. We have to appreciate s show that is dedicated to told a story in one season without compromise.

This series is anti-woke because *checks notes* more realistic than cartoon show of people with literal super powers?
You complain of the one-dimensionality of other series and yet the review is entirely centered on the concept of "wokeness". I think this series deserves a lot more respect than that. There is a lot more to offer than not being woke. Be better.

    • @robchuk4136
      @robchuk4136 Před měsícem +2

From characters, to costumes, to pacing (literally even bookmarked in the timeline) the review clearly talks about a lot that the show offers. Seems like the person fixated on the wokeness is you- Just because it was mentioned in one small part?
And yes, the series avoiding the modern lens actually matters. Did you know someone tried to start a backlash against Shogun because it didn't have any Black people in it? Shogun being more focused on authenticity than identity politics is one of the reasons it stands out. That's what what REAL respect is.
Instead of trying to be sanctimonious, maybe take your own advice?

@@robchuk4136how hard do you have to work to find someone upset about a lack of black characters. 90% of all progressive do no think or care about this stuff at all. By contrast, I would bet at least half of all complaining I hear about is by conservatives seething over innocuous little things. There is no culture war. There is just regular people existing and conservatives throwing fits about it.
