The craziest part to me is the fact that John was a ruse the entire time. He was just a distraction for the opps. Toranaga didn’t need him at all. Pure sleight of hand. “You know why I kept the white boy around? Cause he was funny.” Crazy art of war stuff.

I realise he said this, but I'm not totally buying it. Mariko was 100% in love with John. Shame she had a death wish first

In the original shogun. Toranaga was always laughing when a Jin made a funny comment. Also toranaga learned how to dance like the anjin 😂😂😂

Anjin, the Stereotypical white comedic relief character. Having the white main character be just a PoV character for the audience into a Japanese story is one of the things that makes the story great. He isn't necessary for the win or the great savior, just a funny fly on the wall.
James Clavell, the author, said he was inspired by the sentence "in 1600, an Englishman went to Japan and became a samurai," in his daughter's textbook. The text is about William Adams, Miura Anjin in Japan, the English navigator who was the first Englishman to reach Japan in 1600.

Fun Historical Context: Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Battle of Sekigahara was in 1600. After he won, he gained supremacy in Japan, and in 1603 the Emperor gave him the title of Shogun.
    He died in 1616.
And John? He's based on William Adams. He lived the rest of his life in Japan, spending 20 years there. He created Western Ships for the Shogun, facilitated Japan's approval for trading factors with Netherlands and England, and then captained 4 Expeditions to Southeast Asia. He died at 55 in 1620.

“Why tell a dead man the future” is what Y said about T in E1. T said that to let him know that he knew about his traitorous nature the whole time and had a spy (you can see his manservant in the shot in which he says the line in E1) deep in his ranks. The smile T gives Y when he looks back is an acknowledgment of what Y just figured out.

The book does a few things differently, although the show manages to keep the general spirit of it all. One important bit is that the final chapter of the book is just Toranaga as the point of view character. He spends a day hunting and handling final business at Anjiro before leading his armies west to confront Ishido. Most of what happens is the audience getting to hear his private thoughts, with the occasional interruption of him speaking to another character (Fuji, and the courtesan Kiku.) Here is the basic sense of it all:
    1. Toranaga has been planning to become Shogun for the last 20 years and has patiently built up to this moment, manipulating everything and everyone around him ruthlessly.
    2. Everything that has happened in the story has been according to Toranaga's plan. Everything.
    3. The first open act in his plan was to manipulate Mariko's father into killing Goroda, the ruthless and brutal warlord who ruled Japan and was considered a sadistic beast by everyone.
    4. Mariko's dad (Akechi Jinsai,) was one of Goroda's top two generals. Getting him to kill Goroda caused the other general, Nakamura (the Taiko,) to turn on Akechi and wipe out his entire clan. With one move Toranaga killed the ruler of Japan and one of the two men who might have challenged him.
    5. Mariko's dad didn't plan for her to come back and finish his battle for him, he just wanted his favorite daughter to be safe, so he married her into the Toranaga clan. Toranaga was lying about that stuff to Mariko to get her to go do what she did in Osaka.
    6. The final stage of Toranaga's plan was Crimson Sky, which was never about sending an army to Osaka. Instead, Crimson Sky was a special operation that involved sending his, "falcons," to Osaka. There are three falcons, two of them are goshawks, and one is a peregrine. The two goshawks are Yabu and John, while the peregrine is Mariko. The goshawks are meant to be distracting, spreading chaos and confusion among Toranga's enemies, while his peregrine, the real hunter, uses them as cover while she destroys the unity of the Council of Regents.
    7. Toranaga was manipulating Yabu the entire time, and was using Omi to spy on Yabu and act as his handler.
    8. Toranga's half brother Saeki was part of the plan, and was only pretending to turn on Toranaga in exchange for a position on the Council. When the battle happens, he and his army switch sides. After the dust clears, Toranaga will manipulate the Council into demanding Saeki commit seppuku. This will eliminate a possible competitor, allow Toranaga to seize Saeki's lands, and open a spot on the council for someone handpicked by Toranga.
    9. The person Toranaga makes a Regent is Omi. Toranga is very impressed with Omi, and was using his services secretly all along. He regrets that he will probably have to kill Omi at some point, since Omi is the only other person he's met who is exactly like Toranaga himself.
    10. Ochiba and Toranaga were probably going to be married, but then with Goroda (her father,) dead and the Taiko seizing control, she ended up becoming the Taiko's consort instead. This was probably done to spite Toranaga. The Taiko was infertile, yet Ochiba got pregnant anyway...because the Taiko wasn't the father, Toranaga was. When the Taiko is on his death bed Ochiba is pissed at Toranaga. She had assumed he would take the job of sole regent, marry her, and adopt the heir. She realizes this isn't going to happen, and becomes a woman spurned, which is why she wants Toranaga dead so badly. He's also the only person who could possibly reveal she's been passing off another man's son as the Taiko's heir.
    11. Buntaro wants to kill John because he knows that John and Mariko were having an affair. He knows because literally everyone knows, and just never said anything out of politeness. Toranaga refuses, and then drops the bombshell that he had ordered Mariko and Buntaro divorced months ago, and that who Mariko was pillowing was her business as a single woman. Mariko had requested that Toranaga not reveal this until after her death so as to spare Buntaro any shame. Buntaro then realizes for the first time that Toranaga had sent Mariko to Osaka to die.
    12. Mariko negotiated the deal to burn the ship and save John, but it was Toranaga's idea and he had ordered her to make it happen prior to sending her to Osaka.
    13. Toranaga gives Omi's old fief of Anjiro to John, however, Fuji talks Toranga into adding two additional areas. One of them is perfect for shipbuilding, and the other was a location that was special to John and Mariko during their love affair. She lies about why she wants that area added, and Toranaga knows it, but can't figure out what the real reason is. Nonetheless, he grants the expansion as she requests.
    14. Fuji also discusses potential wives for John with Toranaga. He is planning to give the courtesan, Kiku, to John as his wife, but Fuji won't hear of it. She insists that Omi's ex-wife be given to John. The ex-wife is a very pleasant and attractive woman, and her and John get along very well. Toranaga agrees, but the moment Fuji leaves he goes back on that promise and gives Kiku to John. Toranga had bought Kiku's contract, but he has too much going on to be dealing with a young, sexy girl like that, so he wants to give her to John to get her out of his hair.
    15. Kiku is excited to become John's wife because this will elevate her to the samurai class (John is officially a samurai at this point,) and her children with John will be born samurai.
    16. Fuji doesn't become a nun, she gets permission to end her life. Toranaga tries to talk her out of it, because he has come to see her as a valuable and talented administrator. She sticks to her guns so Toranaga appeals to her sense of motherhood, revealing that he knows she is pregnant with John's child. Mariko and John often included Fuji in their pillowing, and John and Fuji would often be intimate together with Mariko's blessing. Fuji claims that Toranaga is wrong about the pregnancy, and she eventually gets permission to commit seppuku, on the condition she make her death look like an accident so as to spare John further heartbreak. Its never revealed if Toranaga was right about the pregnancy or not.
    17. John never leaves Japan. The visions he has of himself are just that, visions. Those visions don't happen in the book, and his attempt to kill himself happens much earlier, in a totally different context. However, the show uses the dream of "Old Man John," to show the audience that John considers what could happen, then rejects it. The rejection of going back to England and growing old happens (in the show,) during his audience with Toranaga. He has that last vision of himself as an old man, then says, "Fuck it." That's him rejecting the vision and deciding to stay.
    18. Toranga doesn't keep John alive because he makes him laugh. Instead, he is very explicit that he can trust nobody, but it is impossible to live like that. He needs to have at least one friend that is real, and whom he doesn't need to manipulate. John's status as an outsider makes him the perfect candidate. Toranaga wants John to build ships as a way to keep him distracted and happy, but he plans to burn them all and never let John leave.
    19. Ishido was right about everything.

Although Fujiko had arranged for Blackthorne's fief to include the extra area and villages she hadn't stopped planning for an even bigger area, and had already arranged to take over the extended fief from the moment she arrived back in Anijro(Ajiro).
.Although Toranaga said to Kiku that perhaps she should be Blackthorne's wife, he also prefaced that with, "If you please him enough,..., and stll keep him, dutifully, building his ship...neh". Just a way of soothing her, and giving him a way out of not letting her wed Blackthorne. Her children would still be samurai as his consort, and there is no way, as Fujiko pointed out, that Kiku would be capable of running his fief, let alone a village, Midori on the other hand was already doing that, and her training from a child would have been to that end. Fujiko wasn't convinced that Kiku should even rank as chief consort.
Fujiko wasn't going to end her life immediately and was perfectly capable of making sure of getting her way regarding Blackthorne's future household, which she would have seen as her duty. Apart from that, Midori and Kiku liked each other, which would benefit both women.

Great reactions from you two. Its fun to see two friends that enjoy something as much as you did. I urge you to read the book that this was based on. There were many changes in this adaptation. We were deceived. The biggest villain is Toranaga. He kills villagers to find the non-existent culprit who destroyed the ship. Mariko, Yabu and Nagakado are all chess pieces. Ochibanokata, who hated Toranaga, was right.

When Toranaga said he wanted to create a country without wars, an era of peace, he really meant it. Toranaga was based on a real samurai called Tokugawa, and when Tokugawa became shōgun he unified Japan and brought more than 250 years of peace to a fractured country that spent centuries trapped in civil war. Tokugawa was a great leader, a genius and a hero.
