I had a teenage boy, a few years older than me (in high school) say to both me and his friends that I was the only girl to ever understand and “like” him, which made me extremely uncomfortable. 😅
I had assumed he was a girl (due to both his profile picture of a girl and also the fact I never asked for his gender) and was comfortable talking to him that way, after finding out he was actually a man, I ended up blocking him after a few days (this all happens within the span of TWO weeks) and he just lost it. Acted depressed, saying that he lost the only girl who ever liked him and that he cared for…🙃
He never even asked for my age, and we weren’t even close or anything. Just two weeks of talking. 🫠 I ended up relating a lot to the victim in this case. So sad to hear that so many people, like you and me, have gone through such a similar experience and yet she lost her life. May she and all the other people who lost their lives in a similar situation rest in peace.
David went to my high school and we were all horrified when the details of this case came out. His name was always getting announced over the loud speaker for sports recognitions and he seemed like the perfect student. It’s terrifying to think that someone I passed in the hallways at school went on to do something so despicable. My heart breaks for Nicole’s family ❤️
This why always hated in school people acted like ones who played sports were osoo perfect couldn't do anything wrong or bad yet literally they tortured me even at a young age in elementary they would tell me kill myself I got ptsd because that school system sucked because no matter what me and my family did it never stopped

I had been groomed so much, to the point of normalization, that when a guy heard that I was only 15 and refused to continue talking to me (because it was sexually explicit), I thought he was weird for it. Now I know he was actually the only decent guy I talked to

Also when I met the person I was blamed for it and the police said I must have manipulated him into wanting me. His dad was the district attorney prosecutor. He protected his son from being charged and he has a lot of victims out there. I was 12 so I really thought like I was the bad person and deserved it but then I realized later on no he was the adult I was the child. My mom scolded me because she said I could’ve ruined his life by reporting it but the truth is he ruined mine and was never held accountable for any of his victims. The world is a messed up place.
When I was 13 I had a kik and met a 29 yo with a sports car, he would meet with me at my neighborhood park. I thought I was so cool, until he asked to take me home or to bring my little sisters next time. I was so disgusted and told my mom everything… it’s almost like it’s okay until they try to get to your family and then you snap into reality.
I don’t know a single female friend of mine that wasn’t on kik and had grown men messaging us. Like idk how this app is still a thing
I was like that as a teen. Got bullied at school and I needed all support I could get from online and wherever.
That message she wrote to David calling herself annoying reads exactly like the things I would write as a teen. I’m just so glad that dark period of my life is over.
I'm so sorry that you went through that. I've never been bullied in school. By an ex husband , yes. It took me years to get away from him. My daughter was very bullied in school. No matter what I did , it didn't stop. She is 24 now and unfortunately she is now in jail. She chose a group of friends that she thought were accepting. They led her and themselves right to jail.

@@vanessaarnell I was super bullied in school, and ended up a drug addict, but I got clean twice at 24 and finally for the last time at almost 26.. I'm 42 now and haven't touched anything since. All you can do is just be there for when she's ready, (it would have been a lot easier to get myself together if I'd had a support system instead of being alone after foster care, I cannot stress enough how important it is.), it may take her a few times of falling down and getting back up.. just don't give up. 💜
Also, never give money over $6, (can't really get any drugs with that, it should be enough to ride the bus in two directions for appointments. If you give a bus card make sure it's only got enough for a few trips, you can add more online, but she can sell bus cards and gift cards, you only get usually a third of the monetary value), it's better to give groceries and necessities. Also, keep narcan in the house, you can find all kinds of places that give it out for free. I have saved more than a couple lives with it, and even if she isn't doing opiates it may be in other drugs.
Be sure to take care of yourself too, easy to forget to do that when your child is struggling.
I feel the same. My self esteem was very low at that age and when I heard her letter, I instantly felt those feelings all over again. I'm so proud of the strong woman I've become. I'm glad you're in a better place too 💙

I was always a little fighter and I look back on my teenage self’s creativity and courage with pride, but when I read random things I wrote down during that time and when I think deeply, I remember how much a loathed myself because of all the bullying and all the general puberty trouble. I’m really glad it’s all behind and I made it out alive and stronger as well.
I was in a relationship with a 19y old guy when i was only 14. Myself and everyone around me (parents, family and friends) thought that this was totally normal and ok. Spoiler it was not, he groomed me and abused me until i was 20 and i finally got out. People need to look after kids and teenagers, we as adults need to protect them. This story is absolutely heartbreaking. 😭 poor Nicole

Definitely kids and teenagers deserve more protection from the adults around them - and the law needs to protect them too. It is wild to me that here in Canada, the "close in age" exception to the legal age of consent for a 14-15 year old is 5 years. That seems insane to me. Three would have been plenty. There's no justification for a 19 or 20-year-old to be messing with a 14 or 15-year-old.

I remember when my oldest was about 15 & was apparently using this app. Her mental health went to 💩, she started self harming & I couldn't get to the source of the issue. She had NEVER been a kid who acted out or showed any signs of depression before; but I also knew she was a teen. Come to find out much later, she was being targeted thru kik by bullies & grown, nasty men. She felt conflicted about blocking people. Her ❤ was too pure & she thought she would hurt feelings.🤦🏽♀️ So glad we are passed that now.
That’s what happened to my sister with autism, when she started using this app she started self harming & sending nudes & she was NEVER like that before this app. It ruined her mental health as well….it breaks me how big this app is to many..

There were many times that I did restrict the wifi access at home, but I also wasn't sure how to use the parental settings, or even the majority of regular settings. I'm not 'old' persay, but as Danielle says, I'm 80 inside. 🤷🏽♀️ Also, I am my own worst critic; and now know what I missed back then.✌🏽

10 years ago, i turn 22 in a month; i had the same experience on Kik at 12. it’s scary. took me a while to recover from. as i got older, it made my stomach turn as i realized more and more what it all was. i was vulnerable and just wanted friends. i think kik should be taken down in all honesty. it’s definitely a lot more different on there now than it was in 2014 with being able to livestream and such and the newfound anonymity with no verifications in place.
When I was 15 I had a 19 year old boyfriend and at 17 had a 21 year old boyfriend. It’s not okay, and the grooming and mental turmoil I endured at the hands of the 21 year old was horrific. Now in my 30s with a daughter of my own I hope she never has to endure any of this. Sad case, RIP Nicole
Same here. All throughout my teens from age 13 to 18 I dated guys that were 5 to 8 years older than me. I definitely went through an emotional abusive time and did a lot of drugs and drank alcohol whenever I had a chance. Looking back on all of it is jarring and uncomfortable. I put myself in a lot of vulnerable sketchy situations.
When I was 16, I dated a 27 yr old and he messed with my head.
When I was 13 I dated a 19 year old. Saddest part? He WENT TO MY HIGHSCHOOL. I do not believe people past 17/turning 18 should be in a damn highschool with young children. SMH. Super seniors shouldn’t be a thing! There were 20/turning 21 people too.

I had full internet access as a child because the internet in the early 2000’s was so new and my parents weren’t familiar enough to limit me. I was a part of kik and omegle. Both of these are sooo inappropriate and dangerous for children. i know from personal experience.

Kik was all the rage when i was 12 in Australia. it was surprising to all of us that you never had to send a friend request so we used it to ‘pop up’ to boys from local schools. now i see how dangerous it was, i definitely had to block a few creepy guys

I'm a year younger than you and same. Except I wasn't obsessed with Law and Order. I was just playing dress up games. I used to play Imvu, Gaia etc but I wasn't very social. Even then I just didn't talk with people so I didn't pay attention to it. I was sheltered but I was introverted and kind of aware of these things. One time a man tried to convince my friend to get into his car to show him where the closest bank is and I basically stopped her because it seemed weird to me that he asked us for direction plus the bank was so close you could see it so why would we need to get into his car. Anyway he drove off without my friend.
I was obsessed with SVU, born in ‘95, but I definitely had a KIK and bad experiences with adult men 😂 sometimes the bullying and desperation for acceptance is too much
'97, I was very much skeptical and unwilling to trust anyone but still got preyed on. I started using the internet at 5 and was very careful, hadn't gotten myself into any kind of trouble until I was 14. By that point I'd been online for 9 years. You'd think I'd have known better. But nope.
As a person that lived less than 30 mins from vt and was young teenager victimized on kik during this horrible crime is horrifying. R.I.P to Nicole, this innocent young girl that fought so hard for her life and it’s heartbreaking that a mother had to bury their child. Praying for her mother, her family, and loved ones

I do think that parents need to be very restrictive on what they allow their children to access and who they talk to, constantly checking their chat….a condition of being given the privilege of any device. I grew up without them , mobile phones didn’t exist. ! They WILL survive, as much as they may hate it, it’s who they are talking to that is the problem! The brainwashing, grooming happens very quickly with children.
This was a really difficult case to listen to, Nicole was her mums little miracle.

Cause at my high school, when girls came forward to report a boy for sexual assault (myself included) it was downplayed cause, “He’s only 17 and this shouldn’t ruin his life”. It’s been 4 years since high school and he is still harassing women, even worst this time.

I don't want to think about how many intimate pictures I have sent to disgusting scums of the earth. My heart breaks for Nicole and her family, as I too spent my childhood in a hospital only to also get groomed. Rest easy beautiful angel

We had Kik briefly on our school-distributed tablets in middle school. Officially, the school removed it because students used it to arrange fights/targets to jump--which was absolutely true--but now I question if there was a secondary reason... 🙁

i've just had the same conversation with my daughter. thankfully she's intelligent and is aware of the dangers, her school has presentations every year on the dangers of online and dodgy people. She thinks people like Daniel are sick in the head, she said she wouldn't even think of talking to strangers and would block a friend if they talked to her in a sexual way.
I was groomed on kik as a kid. I had a "bf" from when I was 12-15. He was a 26 year old. I hope the app eventually gets taken down! It's horrible and I know so many people who also had kik growing up!
This case is so sad but also so validating I was groomed at 13 by someone who was 18 and I ended up being assaulted for a year by him and I was blamed for it. I hope her family finds peace

As a 15 yr old, before dating apps, dating an older guy was normal and cool. But not for parents. I now get why my parents were upset. And he was so abusive and narcissistic. It set me up for failure in the dating world. But I thankfully broke the cycle and now am praying my girls don’t have the same experiences.
Amanda Todd is a case from BC, Canada who was exploited incessantly and finally took her own life. I’d be interested in hearing your take on Miss Amanda. Another convoluted and horribly tragic Canadian case is that of Reena Virk of BC. Her ringleader murderer Kelly Ellard would make your blood boil!
Oh I remember hearing about the Amanda Todd case back at the age of 10. It was a sad case.

Thank you for covering this case and bringing awareness to how vulnerable children are on the internet. When I was 15 I thought it was okay. As someone who craved attention, I was taken advantage of by some who were anywhere from 4-10 years older than me. If it weren't for my parents monitoring me and sending me to therapy, I could've ended up somewhere hurt or worse. I feel for Nicole and her parents 😢
I grew up in Columbia, Maryland and was a few years older than both of these sick people. One thing to note is the city is roughly 20 minutes from a lot of government agencies. The agencies have high school work-study programs where you can finish your senior year for 20 hours a week and then work at that agency for the remainder. While it is a rarity for the rest of the country, if you are near Washington, D.C. it is a popular option.

Very, VERY unfortunately, when someone is lonely, and they get the impression that someone is attracted to them, and cares about them, The pull is almost irresistible. Even myself, at 48 years old, is not immune to the need to be wanted by someone. This is where the danger of grooming exists.
Every time i hear this story, i cry. The unfairness of her short life, from so many illnesses to betrayal and murder. May she rest peacefully in paradise 💔😢

Back when I used it in middle school and high school, there was no live feature but it definitely was filled with so many men and woman trying to convince me to send nude photos of myself. The amount of people that would threaten self harm when I initially wouldn’t agree is crazy. I had no business talking to people with those intentions. It attributed to the feeling that the only thing I had to offer was my body.
It always really baffles me when people commit murder to cover up some other unsavoury act. Like I don’t want people to find out I’ve had an affair, am a paedophile etc etc but it doesn’t cross their mind that people will find out they’re a literal MURDERER. Like how is that not worse?! Or they have committed a separate, less severe crime and then try to cover it up with murder. Make it make sense. How are people that thick that they think they won’t get caught. So horrible for Nicole and her family 😔 it’s a scary world out there these days for parents of teenagers and for teenagers themselves

When i was 18 I had a relationship with a 27 year old man. I know its not illegal but Jesus, as an adult looking back I realise how horrific this was. I was really lonely and having a very difficult time with my mental health due to some physical health issues I was facing so I was very vulnerable. Thankfully it was a short relationship as I came to my senses quite soon and met someone my own age. Im 31 now and cant imagine dating an 18 year old! An 18 year old is still a child in my eyes. I wouldnt even date someone younger than about 26 I think!

this case is really hard to hear. it’s always really hard when it’s children but especially children who have already been through so much a young age. I was her as child. I was also on Kik and going online to seek relationships with others because I craved acceptance that i wasn’t getting at home or school. this is so heart wrenching and crushing to hear her worry that she’s being annoying and thinking she’s asking for too much. may her sweet soul rest in peace 💘
I just have to say one thing. When I was in highschool I used to use Omegle for attention and knew the fact that older man were pedophiles and didn't care. I know that teenagers can't give consent but most of them know it is a bad thing to do and it is illegal. Teenagers are not that stupid
I was definitely part of the kik issues- I was very much a victim from some of those men, I was groomed and bullied by plenty of men bc they “loved me” I’m so glad it never ended this bad for me n my older sister

It wasn’t always a dating app. It had non of that stuff when I had it. I have a stalker at one point and every time I’d block him or change my account he would always find me very scared as a 13 year old and he was 25 trying to get me to agree to a slave contract.

I must also be a 90 year old inside because I’ve never heard of Kik either. This is such a heart breaking story, he murdered her because of something he’d convinced himself had happened, it’s just baffling. I hope that Nicole’s parents are doing the best they can be under such horrific circumstances and I hope the two of them do horrible time and rot in prison.

I was also abused via kik by random pedophiles. It was so easy for them to do it. I wouldn't even know how to begin to get justice because some of them were in different countries and the whole thing is anonymous. It was sick and they 100% knew what they were doing was wrong. I was emotionally neglected at home and thought the attention that i was getting from other men meant that i was worth something. That app should be shut down.

24 year old female here from uk and i remember using kik and omegle because my friends used it. And this was a problem even then 10 years ago! I feel embarrassed how i was so stupid speaking to people i didnt know, i really thought i knew better then! Now i suffer with trauma thinking of my past and i really feel worthless now i am a grown woman and unlovebable. Im so mad at my younger self for not knowing better and being so stubborn 😢😔😔
I had also used Kik when I was a young teenager (also about 10 years ago). I had done some pretty questionable things because I was groomed into thinking I was mature for my age. I thought I knew what I was doing.
Please do not be too harsh on yourself. You were a child, of course you are going to think you know better! They were the adults in the situation, they knew better. You are still lovable no matter what!

Not blaming Nicole’s mom but this is exactly why you can’t be the “cool mom” and want to be “besties” with you child. There eventually will be no boundaries and that leads to dangerous situations.
