      _In point of fact, and not without some irony, you are presently discovering that such thoughts as you just expressed .. "I wish I had" .... Do not matter. For it is here now. It is not past, nor in the future. This is the only time you can be a super-[insert name]._
      _Thinking of the past, and worse, lamenting about it (it is gone, you know) matters only if it helps you be more fully endowed with virtue NOW. You might say, "for the time I have wasted, I will now make up for". And then follow thru, remembering your lamentation, IF YOU FIND IT HELPS. You rule your mind. It is your Kingdom. This is the kind of thing you are learning; the test has already begun. The present contains your grade._
      _Take a step back from your participation in your experience. Observe your situation. It's no longe personal. That's the key. It is happening to [your GIVEN name], but not you. From this space having stepped aside, give yourself injunctions. Eg "this situation need not disturb me. Instead, I will use it to center me more than had it not occurred." And practice that all day! Stepping aside and commenting on how helpful everything is._
      _perspective is the goal, rightly_
      _Also, Certain lessons in A Course In Miracles teach this as well, but it is far more advanced. This work, like the Ra Material, are unique in their manifestation._

    @Ryan Holiday, I found the Q&A interesting. I have been a member of other communities around a subject or a cause. I have heard your same speech about the need to change up the presentation and attitudes to bring the benefits of the subject to the masses. I have also seen the community around those causes quietly groan and disdain at that idea. How interesting. In my own community I occasionally met people who did not fit the subculture of the community around the subject. They were "mainstream", but open minded enough to get into the subject, and self assured enough to stay with it on their own after meeting the community for that subject and seeing that they didn't fit. For them, thank you for your attitude & work of outreach. They taught me a lesson I can now use, that I can be Stoic on my own apart the the Stoic community. It now looks like I am the open minded outsider. I've seen a bit more pretentiousness, arrogance, and snobbery in the modern Stoic community than I care for. On the positive side, they are not as bad as the modern atheist community. :). In the end, for me, for the community is the question "does it make you happier?". No disrespect to anyone.

    • @moenibus

    I feel he does have the tendency to take quotes out of context. "Go straight to the source of intelligence" is not part of a passage on mentorship, but on providence. Marcus reminded himself here of the interconnectedness of all creatures endowed with logos, rather than propose a lifehack.

    His credibility took a huge hit when he got so emotional in his opposition to Trump. Like attacking anyone on Instagram who had an opposing opinion. The fact that he opposed Trump didn't bother me, I never voted for the man myself. His reaction to anyone who dared to think differently from him was very disappointing though. Something for those on here to consider.

  • @shaunpearce6846
    @shaunpearce6846 Před 3 lety

    Man, academia is just obsessed with anti-trump stuff. This is the second video on stoicism where they had to talk about that specific topic.
    The man literally found large groups of disenfranchised regular average joe types of people and appealed to them lol. That’s why he got so many first time voters and former Obama voters. The first president to be elected in modern times that wasn’t in politics before getting into office (that definitely pissed off both major parties). He did good things and bad things like a normal human being and like most other presidents. He’s the imperfect representative many regular people wanted, which was someone who wasn’t a career politician. He’s a reaction of a large population who are tired of being ignored by political elites.
    Ambitious? Sure. Same could be said about all presidents though. But he sure lost lots of money being in office. He sure got personally attacked by the overwhelmingly majority of mainstream institutions including academia, media, business, tech, and politics (typically owned by billionaires).
    If you want to find out society’s true master, find the people who can deal out major repercussions for criticizing them.

    I am certainly not questioning the authenticity and intellectual background of the speaker, neither do the subject which by nature I love stoic philosophy, nonetheless the matter that this lecture is presented, the tone of the voice, the agility that the speaker wants to elaborate his view on the subject are somewhat defective I am afraid. Usually stoic talking is about ethics and it should be spoken in very slow manner, with the camera man very close to the speaker, and obviously showing more character than usually do, the slides are nice but they are still far away from the rest of audience..this can suit a lecture in physics or perhaps Astronomy but certainly not stoic philosophy. Better presentation mode next time, thanks

      I think it's in accurate to say "self-help guru," he's obviously educated himself a lot on the topic of Stoicism and his books The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy are meant to serve as practical applications of Stoicism in everyday life within the modern world. It's no gushy mushy "feel great you can do whatever you want" type of thing at all.

Another point, he's an author of three books, two of which are great fucking books. Also, what are you talking about large audiences? This isn't a large crowd.
