- Merrick is a Corbett located in Galloway Forest Park, Scotland, and one that I have been chasing the views from since 2018. It is reputed that on a clear day you can see as far as Northern Ireland to the east and Mount Snowdon in Wales to the south-east.
This vlog is part of my journey chasing those views and visiting a site that marks the spot one of Scotland's most famous Kings started his campaign.

Hi Jim, you're very welcome. It's been a wee bit of a jinx for me has Merrick but I like when something tests you as it teaches you. I've definitely learned a lot from climbing this wee hill, mainly in terms of weather.

Thanks Ian, I will do. I'm only recently back 'in to' hillwalking but every trip I learn something new. Even when things go wrong it's all a lesson in the end.

That's one place on my massive list to visit. Mainly because I want to visit castle Campbell but the glen looks stunning too.

just back from the lake district. great place. lots to do and see.
Nicely made mate, enjoyed that even if you never got to the top. Kev and I got a similar day a couple years ago, we camped just below the summit.
Shame about the mess in the bothy, that's why the MBA will never take that one being too close.

I have an overnighter planned for up there soon and hopefully the weather treats us right too.
The bothy is a shame because it's a brilliant shelter but has appeared abused each time I've passed. Saddened to say that when I was walking out of it I actually saw a small bag with damp white powder in it... and I don't think it was washing powder 😔
I'm determined to grab the views from the summit of Merrick and a spot of wild camping.

@@AScotsmanOutdoors you should head over to Craignaw too, it's a Graham, but with it's rugged rocky nature, you could be in Torridon for all you know. Wee video from our trip on my channel somewhere.

You know, I keep looking at those wee hills and part of my latest journey was to head over near Craiglaw. I think you may have just gave me a point for a *relaxing overnighter.
I did also think about camping on Little Spear just off of Merrick, purely because I think it would look good.

Took me 4 times before reach the summit weather change really quick up there 👍
It does to be fair. I've saw it flip quickly, which quickly flips my decision to continue 😂
Did you get good views once you had reached the summit?
How long would you say it would take to reach the top ?
Hey, it's about 2.5 / 3 hours to the top of Merrick at a leisurely pace. I would say.
Thank you went up a couple of weeks ago toughest one I’ve done went up during the night to make it up for sunrise was worth it . Stupid question but are hiking bags a lot better that a normal backpack my bag kept getting heavier n heavier lol so looking at getting a hiking bag thanks
Good that you grabbed a sunrise. What bag are you using at the minute?
Just a run of you mill backpack with just shoulder straps I def feel like straps across the chest n stomach would help also I’ve got a drone that I want to take up so that would be a bit extra weight lol (oh and those red chairs are still there lol)
Chest straps transfer the weight from the shoulders to the chest (obviously) and this can be a big relief.
The hip belt reduces any sway which also helps with maintaining energy because you don't have to counter balance and such.
I personally use a 65 litre pack and have a 35 litre for day hikes. Both have the chest and hip belt.
It all depends on how much stuff you are looking to carry and what suits you best. You'll find over time what you do and dont like and what you do and dont need.
Have a look on here because there are plenty of options and varying prices.
Have you ever managed to capture Snowdon?
Hi, I haven't ventured there before however it is supposedly able to be seen from Merrick on a clear day. The only hills i have visited in Wales are the Brecon Beacons. Have you visited any Scottish peaks?

I'm interested in long distance photography and rumours are this is an achievable target to capture on camera like you say on a clear day. I'm hoping to visit at some point, knowing my luck it won't be the best weather to make any observations. Thanks again.
