    This was a wild camping trip on Merrick which is located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. I set off with Scott of ‪@outlawedlandscapes‬ to hopefully capture a sunrise on what has now become my bogey hill. Along for the trip was Scott's dog, Coops, whom I now owe a ball after I launched his into the bog.
    As always, I hope that this helps people in some way if planning a trip into the hills and I hope you enjoy.

      It's honestly a deceiving hill and not as easily conquered as you might think. It throws up some challenges everywhere.
      What side did you come up from and where was the bad bog? (There's bogs on all sides I've attacked it from).

      That's absolutely creepy how much I resemble that character but having watched the trailer I have to say my trips are a lot more innocent.
      I'll be giving that a watch soon as it looks my kind of funny.

    Another great video 👍 I was over on Mullwharchar that night. Was definitely a great night for astrophotography I stuck my head out the tent just after 9 and looked up and could see the milky way with the naked eye👍. Conditions were certainly different the next morning. I also made a sharp exit as I had to head back over Hoodens to Loch Doon 😖

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před rokem +1

      Cheers Steven 👍🏼
      It was definitely a decent night to see them and I did catch the milky way with the naked eye but the camera wasn't for having it and I didn't have the tripod for the phone.
      Ah, we'd dropped off the western side of the summit by a short way so would have been out of sight of Mullwharchar.
      It was a decent night but that gloom when I opened the tent said it all for the day ahead. We did get some okay views when we were descending but they quickly switched to grey and rain again.
      How far a trek to Mullwharchar is it from the base of Loch Doon?

      @@AScotsmanOutdoorsHi it is around the 7 mile mark depending on what route you take . I started by driving down past the castle and parked at the car park just before were the gate is closed. I tried a different route on the way in heading in over Gala lane.... Avoid at all costs it was a nightmare after crossing the foot bridge and getting on to the shoulder of Hoodens Very boggy with hidden ankle breaking hole. I noticed on the way up there was a quad track skirting round the east side of Craigmawhannal so tried that on the way back and was slightly better. If you are ever planning on doing this I would just do it by crossing over the foot bridge at Carrick Lane as I have previously went that way when i done Macaterick earlier this year and can confirm this is definitely the best route to take. There are plenty of good spots on the summit to camp but it is worth heading a bit further south to get great views of loch Enoch and the Dungeon hills👍

    Just watched this on the big TV mate, excellent vid. The colours were excellent for dusk. Never knew that about the loch within a loch, must be another example? 🤔 Will be scanning the maps for the North West now. 😂
    Intimate pitch by the way, couldn't slide a credit card between those tents 😘

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před rokem +1

      Hey mate, I hope you're well and thanks. It's always nice to hear I've made it to peoples' big TVs 👍🏼
      The dusk was awesome with the blues and greys, makes a nice change from the no-views and greys.
      I'd never heard of, or thought of, the inception loch until Scott had said but there has to be another, surely. If not, then that's quite a unique feature.
      The pitch looked like it was some kind of old foundation as we could see a feint outline and the centre was recently flat and soft so both got the use of it. There's no barriers in mountain comfort... spooning is always hovering there as an option, especially in the cold.
      Is that why we got the bothy to 25oC? To obliterate the chance of spooning 😂

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace Před rokem

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors tents spooning, could become a new thing. 😜 It could well be unique to D&G. I'll definitely be checking more maps to see. North West and Hebrides are studed with lochs with islands. First person to film camping on that island would be cool

      Thanks Derek and again thanks for continuing to watch and comment, it means a great deal.
      The Merrick is a funny wee hill for me, partly because it's never given me just that perfect condition that I've been after and because it hasn't it's become a wee muse for me.
      The area is less considered than the Highlands but has some brilliant views out towards the coast and decent ring routes around the lochs.
      I'll get this one day with a great walk and the spot on conditions, once I do I'll leave it be.

      Cheers Gordon, it was a decent sunset and that glen lends itself nicely to them when the weather is good. That wee rock I was sat on is a great spot to look out towards the sea and enjoy it, not so much on that morning though 😂
      The high route is doing well but I did have a wee guy-line slip through the tightening clip in the morning with a bit of wind so that's something I'll be keeping an eye on. It just flapped at one corner until I pulled it back through but apart from that, she's going well.

      Ah, there you go but as we had discussed (Scott and I) we said it would be mad if that was the only one but with over 30,000 lochs there was bound to be another somewhere.
      What would be interesting now would be to see how many "Inception Lochs" there are in Scotland. Do you think there's any with a loch inside a loch... inside a loch?
      With 30,000... there's bound to be. When does a puddle become a loch?
