Deutsche Bahn’s ICE T is a special train for a couple of reasons. First, it is the slowest ICE in DB’s fleet with a top speed of 230 Km/H. Even though it can't go as fast as the other ICEs, it is the only ICE that has a chassis capable of up to an 8° tilt to maintain speed while cornering. This is probably the ICE T’s best-known feature and that’s why the T stands for Tilting. The last cool feature about the ICE T is that it has sub-compartments in 1st Class which is something that can’t be found on any other Deutsche Bahn train. These sub-compartments are not fully enclosed like the ones found on the ICE 1 & ICE 3. They also have only four seats as opposed to six.

The 6-passenger compartments were pretty much standard through the 70's, so it was always a fun family trip. My mother and sister are originally from Braunschweig, but moved to the States in the late 50's. We spent many years since then traveling back to see family. We happened to make a final trip to Germany with mom in 2017. I spent hours trying to book compartment seating, and it paid off, as we made the rail trip from München to Braunschweig in a 1st class 6-person compartment. At the time I knew that it was probably the last time I would ride with mom, and I was right. We lost mom several years ago, but thanks to your video, I can keep some of those memories alive! One of my DB rail traditions is to always order an "Apfelschorle" (apple spritzer beverage) while on board. Once or twice a year, when I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll make myself the same drink at home and try to imagine I'm back on the train.
    Many thanks again.

Of course and I am very glad you enjoyed the video. My heartfelt condolences for your loss but I’m glad you hold those happy memories so close. The 6 passenger compartment is slowing fading as one can only see it on the ICE 1 models and a few ICE 3s but both are slowly getting refurbished. For the longest time DB ran the ICE between Frankfurt and Berlin via Braunschweig but I believe that route is now operated by the ICE 4. That’s cool that’s your family is from Braunschweig because that is the city where my father studied. My family is from the next city over Wolfenbüttel which is where I was living during the time this video was filmed. Overall I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your nice comment.

@@theplanefacts My father is originally from Lüdenscheid, and he was studying in Braunschweig (Deutsche Müllerschule), where he met my mother. My father is still with us, doing well at 95!

This makes me want to visit Germany again! It also makes me realize how extremely backward our passenger rail system is here in the US. Thanks for posting this.

The transportation system in Germany is better than in the USA but it still isn’t perfect. Deutsche Bahn is infamous for delays and trains breaking down.

How does the ICE-T compare with ICE-3 and ICE-4? I have read that after the refit it's comparable with ICE-3?

Hi, sorry I missed your comment and it took me so long to respond. The post-retrofit ICE 3s and ICE 4s are basically identical with newer seats, updated screens, and mood lighting. The ICE T still has the older seats and the screens are still from the turn of the millennium. However I do find the older cabins to be more comfortable because the seats are softer and there is more space. With the newer cabins, DB has put in more seats prioritizing profit over passenger comfort.
