- "The fight between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon for control over the Seven Kingdoms. Both of them thought they belonged on the Iron Throne. When people started declaring for one of them or the other, their fight divided the kingdoms in two. Brothers fought brothers, dragons fought dragons. By the time it was over, thousands were dead. And it was a disaster for the Targaryens as well. They never truly recovered."
―Princess Shireen Baratheon, S5E9 - Zábava
Viserys is hands down the best narrator for history. He has no biases; In his opinion, _everyone_ is stupid.
Excellent narrator, but definitely not bias free 😂
😂😂😂
Good boy Viserys sees how idiotic his family's infighting was. The whole war was worthless. What happens when conquerors run out of outside enemies.
He sees anyone who rejects even the slightest bid for power as stupid.

Seeing Matt Smith leaping from a dying dragon and impaling another dragon rider through the eye is going to be a SIGHT.

Agreed. Make it happen HBO.
“The blood of their children turned a dynastic dispute into a war of annihilation. The grief and rage of losing a child could burn down the entire world. Either Aegon or Rhaenyra could live at the end, but not both.”

Would have been a bargain bin of dragon corpses for the night king if he decided launch his attack during the dance
Targaryens really are their own worst enemies. It makes sense that the two times they were brought to near extinction was by their own kin.
Could Robert be considered a Targaryan? He has Targaryan blood from his grandmother but he is more baratheon than targaryan, although Orys Baratheon was also of Targaryan blood so?
Well in the case of Rhaegar and Dany it was loving a Stark that got them killed 😒
@@alexsaavedra644 what got Rhaegar killed is his obsession with the prophecy and he totally deserved his fate
Include Jon snow for killing Dany.
@@jarahfluxman20 Yup. Even though he overthrew Aerys via Right of Conquest, he also used his Targaryen lineage via his grandmother to legitimize his rule, tracing back to Orys Baratheon, illegitimate half-brother of Aegon I.

@@DietEllie Well we know he was pretty headstrong. Too bad his enemies got ahead of him
They should have him tell a line of Martells too. Dorne was not part of (Seven) Kingdoms back there, but they were offered by Greens (Aegon II.'s side) to join the war aswell.
"Dorne has danced with dragons before. I would sooner sleep with scorpions."
Literally nobody won this war. Not even Aegon II. When he died, King's Landing was under siege by armies loyal to Rhaenyra.
Jack Murphy you could argue the Blacks were victorious since it was Rhaynera’s line that continued.
@@CaptLiHellsing They were indeed that is why there is lot of bias to their side.
i think rhaenyra won . it was her line that suceeded in the throne #teamblack
Natalie Moisa well Rhaenyra isn’t considered queen in official royal standards, as Aegon II is because there is Aegon the III. And after the War law was fixed to exclude women from succession, while a black victory would rather have stated the end of male preference in inheritance
@Stephen Jenkins Rhaenyra didn't want strictly male inheritance to continue: her perspective was always that a daughter would inherit if her father designated her as his heir, as Rhaenyra's father did for her. She even considered giving the holdings of certain dead lords to their daughters, but only stopped when Corlys Velaryon told her that such an action would make tons of lords rebel against her.
As a whole though, yeah, the Dance was pretty much about power.
With both dragons wounded and incapable of flight, Daemon and Aemond were both dead without question before they hit the ground. There was no need to stab Aemond through the skull - it was just to prove that Daemon was always the superior strategist. He used his last moments to flex on his nephew. I respect that.
lmao 😂
At least the whole Westeros will know Daemon killed Aemond since Dark Sister was on his face when his body was found, rather than just them both dying cuz the dragons are dying. Daemon will always be the most dramatic sht and he needs to die with style.
It ensured that aemond died... Yes they both could have died... But there was a slight chance that they might live... I wish daemon lived through this
@@crowd_alice pretty much, Caraxes gave his life to take down Vhagar and succeded, but Daemon couldn't know that would be the outcome, if the smaller Dragon had failed and Vhagar had free herself from his jaws she would have been Riderless and not a threat to the Blacks.

Finally 6 years after this video came out, we will have a full on series on the dance of the dragons.
I just hope develops more into detail about the characters n they don't kill the king off to soon
This video blew my mind and made me fall in love with the universe more than GoT did. Frankly it was the best prequel to adapt.
ikr!
These vids were so easy to find back then. Now I gotta get caught up on the lore again.
They should have done this first, since the story itself was already complete.
What always gets me about the Dance of the Dragons is that the two prospective monarchs, Aegon II and Rhaenyra, seemingly didn't even want the war. Aegon II straight-up refused the crown, stating his sister was heir, until he was pushed into it. Rhaenyra wanted to solve things with diplomacy and was willing to back out the moment people started dying. It's the people around them, like Allicent, Aemond and Daemon, that caused all the major escalations until there was no choice but either one of them dying.
Note: this comment was made before HotD began. I'll reserve judgment on what went down in that version of events until the series ends.
Tbf to alicent she begged for Viserys for Aegon to marry Rhaenyra when coming off age and to be done with it but he refused
@@UTFR58 Yes, and it's even confirmed that Alicent and Rhaenyra initially got along fine. Sure, there's the squicky nature of inbreeding, but we're talking about Targaryens. Alicent's solution probably could've prevented a crisis, but no one listened.
Otto hightower and her daughter alicent is the true start of the conflict
Aegon protested but only up to a point and eventually he just decided that he was the rightful king. These people so easily forget the declarations of the preceding king and the oaths that the lords swore to serve Rhaenyra as the heir.
And Criston Cole the kingmaker

@@WirHyperboreer The Greens were not power hungry, they acted straight out of fear. It's actually an incredibly moving story.
Basically the dance of the dragons owes it's existence to the weakness of Viserys
Yes. Viserys was a very bad king, the series shows a wise man but he wasn't.
Both Jaehaerys and Viserys were to blame
@@johnmurphy7674 Never shows him as wise, it shows him as kind.
To me, the Dance of Dragons started when King Viserys married Alicent Hightower and had three sons with her, knowing that it would cause a rift between his little Princess, his Queen, his children and his grandchildren. The dance is still on Viserys in the books for me. The Hightowers also started it because Queen Alicent and her father, Ser Otto Hightower were still greedy and ruthless but the King started all of this the moment he married an ambitious second son’s daughter.
I mean he could have just given in to their demands and name Aegon his heir. The expectation was clearly there from the start, him taking Alicent to wife and fathering three sons on her but then denying them the throne was kind of a massive dick move on his part. That's not how you treat a longtime loyal sevant and friend and his daughter that he essentially used as a broodmare for spare heirs and personal caretaker without ever giving anything back.
good insight.
@@pg1448 He also could've had Aegon II and Rhaneyra marry to seal the rift.
Viserys made it clear that Rhaenyra was his heir, but he didn't do much to ensure a smooth succession. In the book version Viserys wasn't sick he was a foolish glutinous king. The dance is loosely based on the war of succession between Empress Matilda and king Steven. Matilda was the heir, but her cousin fought her for the crown. In the end Steven ruled and Matilda's son was his heir. Just like Rhaenyra, Matilda's line is the one which carried on.
@@pg1448I think you've missed the base point though. Even if he had given into their demands and made Aegon the heir, Rhaenyra would still have fought for the throne. She'd wanted it all her life, and at least until Aegon was born, been raised knowing it would be hers.
Shireen is probably the sweetest character in Game of Thrones. I miss her so much.

A futile war that nearly ended the Targaryan dynasty. What makes this tale even more tragic is that the two prospective monarchs, Aegon and Rhanerya, didn't want war to break out or rule the kingdom. Aegon even says himself that Rhanerya's claim was stronger. It was the people around them, like Daemon and Alicent, that fed them delusions that they had to wage war otherwise their family would have been put to the sword.
Aegon said that Viserys favored Rhaenyra. By every law and custom in Westeros, Aegon had a stronger claim. It wasn't a delusion. It was a very real possibility. Especially when Daemon and others were there, who wasn't below that.
For the vast majority of time and in most places it didn't happen, but tensions were high and the succession disputed. Irl, the Ottomans went very far here. Mehmed 3 killed 19 of his brothers and half brothers. On the vague possibility that they might rebel.
Now when did daemon fed her delusions?
@@Mr33500 The Targaryens made the realm one through conquest the iron throne before Aegon the Conquerer its was six or seven kingdoms constantly fighting each other and he brought them all togheter not through the might of the faith of the seven but through dragons. Fun facts that were left out of this retelling.
-Rhaenyra's three eldest boys were from her marriage to Colrys Velarion and Rheny Targaryen's son. However, they all had brown hair and pug noses, so behind their back they were called "Strong," implying they were bastards of Rhaenyra's champion, Harwin Strong. Lucerys was the one who took out Amon's eye in a fight, which is why Amon killed him outside of Storm's End.
-The main reason the lord Baratheon refused to side with Rhaenyra was because Amon had agreed to marry one of his daughters, while none of Rhaenyra's children were eligible for marriage. He would later retake Kings Landing for Agon II after Rhaeyra's death, but was killed in a battle against Black loyalists in the Riverlands, which is what prompted Agon's men to poison him when he refused peace after this defeat.
-Rhenys was known as the Queen who Never Was, since her grandfather, Jaherys I, and the grand council of 101, skipped over her to put her cousin Viserys I on the throne.
-Two member of the Kingsguard at the time were twin brothers, and each swore to either the Blacks or the Greens. The Greens tried to use their twin to assassinate Rhaenyra, but he was found by his brother, and the two died killing each other.
-Rhaenyra's youngest son, Viserys, survived the naval battle in which he was kidnapped, and was taken to the free cities as a hostage. He eventually re-united with his brother years later, and eventually succeeded him and two of his nephews as king, becoming Viserys II.
-Agon's second son was found with a member of the Kingsguard trying to get to loyalist forces after the fall of King's Landing. He was ripped apart by a mob of peasants who hoped to cash him in for a reward.
-Sunfyre made his way to Dragonstone, where he fought and killed two dragons. One was a wild one, and the other was ridden by a daughter of Prince Daemon. Despite winning both fights, Sunfyre would die from his wounds shortly after killing Rhaenyra.
-After Joffrey's death, Rhaenyra's dragon Syrax was killed fighting the mob at the Dragon Pit. Strangely, the dragon chose to fight on the ground rather than in the air.
-The Green army from the Reach was lead by Agon II's grand uncle and his youngest brother, who was also a dragon rider. The uncle died in the battle of Tumbleton, which delayed the Greens from getting to Kings Landing as they figured out who was now in charge. The two betrayers complicated things, since they demanded to either be made lord of Highguarden or King of Westeros due to their dragons. They would end up being killed by an alliance of Green lords.
-Adam Velarion, a Dragonseed related to Colrys Velarion, was also suspected of being a traitor by Rhaenyra. Colrys warned him in advance, which allowed him to flee. However, unlike the girl Nettle who left the war, Adam gathered together Black loyalists and attacked Tumbleton. Wow A house of dragons is going to be quite long… Good ! 😄
The Faith of the Seven kept the dragon on the ground. I mean if you seriously think about it, a Dragon would never fight on the ground unless the rider commanded it to
The attention to detail on stuff like this is mind-blowing
That 1-on-1 battle between Daemon and Aemond will be PEAK fantasy television. Oh how I can't fucking wait for that duel.
I might go one further and claim that one scene will be the greatest moment in all of television history.
No one was there to really know what happened i mean they were literally 100 of feets high in the air
The storming of the dragonpit has such a Storming of the Bastille vibe. The dragonpit and the dragons were the simbol of Targaryen power and their opression over the common folk during the war. RIP to the poor animals though.
I'm glad I finally found an opinion similar to mine. The town didn't become fanatical out of nowhere, but they were tired of living in fear of being burned alive, not to mention that Helaena killed herself and Rhaenyra is getting more and more paranoid. The people acted in self-defense, they couldn't sleep peacefully with so many dragons around. The shepherd didn't make Rhaenyra fall, he just gave her the final push.
The Hightowers oppressed the smallfolk they blundered the treasury so Rheanyra didnt have the money to pay for the realm and she taxed the smallfolk to their breaking point and they lashed out. The smallfolk always lash out at the wrong people because they lack information and basic nutrients. They are the biggest tools just point and they will destroy whatever target you give them. Even if it is a child they dont care look what they did to Maelor even if it goes against their self interest look at the storming of the dragon pits. If the smallfolk had any idea what was going on in the Red Keep they would support Rheanyra. Its just funny how they never turned against the Hightower.
@@yusufraage8554 the Greens didn't blunder the treasury, they just kept most of it out Rhaenyra's reach so that she wouldn't use it against them and part of it was also spent in the war.
And overtaxing people who have little to nothing was Rhaenyra's(or at least her master of coin's) idea, when she had the wealth of many powerfull houses on her side including the richest( the Velaryons).
And as far as I know the people in King's Landing also disliked Aegon and Aemond so their beef wasn't just with Rhaenyra. And even if they rebelled against the greens, the dragonpit would probably still be the target. And the death of Helaena was the spark that started the riot and it was Daemon who drove Helaena to suicide. Plus Rhaenyra did other things that were seen as blasphemous like trying to break the law of guest right against Nettles.
@@masterplokoon8803 Yeah, they blundered it like the crown, the realms treasury was Rheanyra's to spend and when Rheanyra captured Kings Landing the treasury was empty after the dance nothing was recovered.
So you're telling me they spended the money Jahearys I and Viserys I accumulated for over 80 years in a war of 2 years wich they lost.
Larys Strong probably spended most of that coins on better looking feets then Alicent's. old ass saggy feet.
In war you need high taxes especially if your evil stepmon usurps the throne for her degenerate son because she thinks a cock makes you great at ruling. Even Rheanyra's paranoia is caused by the greens they killed 2 of her sons that they would call bastards since they were born.
Rheanyra is a true Targaryen princess and heir to the iron throne she didnt fear no-one untill they usurpt her throne it was aways hers.
Atleast Rheanyra died thinking she lost everything but Alicent died knowing she lost everything.
A mother who feared that her children were gonna be put to the sword by Rheanyra, raised a son who would kill Rheanyra's apple of the eye and by doing that they would awaken the fury of a mother dragon.
@@masterplokoon8803 at that point the velaryons had already lost most of their wealth since high tide and spicetown were sacked.

You know Viserys' narrations are kind of funny given that (1) the "feeble and foolish" king he refereed to was Viserys I and (2) he appears to favor Aegon II though he is descended from Rhaenerya not Aegon II (all of his children died without children) so if history had played out the way he would have preferred his claim to the throne would have been weakened.
he favored Aegon cuz he mas male, Viserys doesnt want females to rule or give him commands
Aegon and Rhanerya's kids never had kids. Aegons's daughter killed herself (or was killed it was never confirmed) not too late by afterwards and Aegon remarried.
Sub - Zero but he remarried and had sons and daughters, two of his sons (Daeron and Baelon) would become Kings and when they died, their uncle (therefore Rhaenyra’s son) Viserys ascended the throne as Viserys II.
There are different sources. GM Munkin's telling is based on GM Orwyle's account of the dance. Orwyle's served in Aegon's court and is biased against Rhaenyra. Both Septon Eustace and Mushroom served in the Queen's court and give a different view.
@@oberonyronwood5657 Then by the time of Dunk and Egg, eleven people had to either kill themselves, abdicate, or die 'under circumstances' for Viserys' great-grandfather to arrive at the throne. Each storyteller fits the part of the narrative that relates to him. Catlyn recalls her terror from witnessing the assasination attempt on young Bran and the successful one on Robb. Viserys talks about his facination with his house' former glory, traitors and schemers taking it down from within, all while being blind to the madness attached to his bloodline. Robert talks at Storm's end scene and conquest of the throne, represents the endless merciless fury that drives life and leads eventually to said conquest, intended or not. Oberyn shows the beauty in bastardry and sexual freedom, and the assured poetic destruction when taking out giants. Joffery talks at the scene of prince joffery's death, his father also drunk on milk of the poppy, represents the sadistic pleasure associated with humiliating a helpless enemy, especially women and parents in front of children. Finally, we have Shireen, opening and ending the story, talking from the perspective of children who are to young to understand. Seeing it only as an interesting historic tale to tell before a good night sleep, naively unaware of the depths of its horrors and not fully grasping a real life lesson from it.
That was amazing
In HotD, I like the fact that it is dragon's will that started the war. Aemond only wanted to scare Lucarys using Vhagar. Arax - Lucarys' dragon is provoked by this and started fighting against Vhagar (defying Lucarys' will to fly away). Vhagar which is provoked at this point, ended Arax (defying Aemond's will to not kill Arax or Lucarys).
This is perfect & aligns with the phrase - 'A dragon is not a slave'. It has its will and should be respected. Also - this aligns with nature of fire. Fire can only be controlled to some extent. It goes out of control once it passes certain tipping point.
Targaryens came to power because of dragons. And Targaryens lost power because they did not understand dragons.
It is as King Viserys said to Rhaenyra before the skull of the black dread himself, “The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power man should never have trifled with.”
This doesn't even mention the northern lords that were marching south, even after Rhaenyra died. Their approach spelled doom for Kings Landing but the King refused to back down. That's why he was poisoned, because they didn't stand a chance against the north. So Lord Stark, angry that his army didn't get a fight, forced himself in as hand of the king, made Rhaenyra's son marry Aegon's daughter and ruled until they came of age. Then he went home.
Edit: my mistake, he was only Hand for a few days. Thanks for correcting me :)

@@lukebullen705 Not necessarily, Fire & Blood (Dance of Dragons) wasn't really a story, anyway. It's more of a play by play of historical events with little bits of dialogue here and there. It was a symbolic victory on the part of the greens that Aegon II was remembered as king; Even Stannis, the most just of all, considers Rhaenyra a traitor and her end was deserved.
On the other hand, we must also say that the Hightower supported the maesters and these are the ones who write history
@@michelm5072 viserys ii could of changed it but never did so
@@michelm5072 I'm so DONE with "the maesters did it" excuse for EVERYTHING....Rhaenyra's own sons acknowledged Aegon II as the king. None of them ever objected against the history. Because he took the throne, rightful or not. Even Cregan Stark acknowledged him as the king, and Rhaeyra as the one who failed.
That line of viserys was awesome how his ancestors danced away his rights 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
