Ohio and Michigan's rivalry started out between the states themselves and dates back to the late 1700's when there was a conflict over part of the state line. There is even a road that defines part of the state line. It's called Territorial Road. So this rivalry continues to this day between the colleges.

You should react to the highlights of Saturday's Michigan/Ohio State game. Michigan upset Ohio State in a great game, but the teams got into it on the way to the locker rooms, a Buckeye defender ripped off a Michigan players helmet during the game, and then at the end of the game, the fans stormed the field. The entire atmosphere was incredible. Something as a college football fan, everyone could enjoy and shows you how big the rivalry and sport is here in America! Also, Go Blue!

Most of the big rivalries are regional. Michigan/Ohio State, Michigan/Mich St, Alabama/Auburn, Texas/Baylor, Baylor/TCU, Oklahoma/Texas, Oklahoma/Oklahoma State*, Clemson/South Carolina, Ole Miss/Mississippi State, Florida/Florida State*, and many more. University of Miami just fights everyone. *Most states have an XYZ/XYZ State University, they're always rivals even if one program sucks. Most rivarly games happen right around this time of year (there were several today) but you also get some games like Michigan vs Central Michigan, where one team is much larger/more dominant (on paper) than the other but the small school has a chip on their shoulder because their players didn't get recruited for the elite program.

Also, around the 7 minute mark, Michigan State normally do the walk out and all link arms like that, but for the Michigan game, they came out 30 minutes early when Michigan was supposed to warm up and interrupted their warm ups. This lead to michigan players not moving and then Devin Bush cleating up the logo at midfield. Another big rivalry game.

There was a game between Miami & Florida State back in the 90s where mulitiple players were ejected for fighting, before the game started.
For College Football (D1 FBS) each game matters more. If you are a contender 1 loss can ruin your chances for a national championship, 2 losses all but guarantees you won't get there. Losses late in the season hurt more than losses early in the season, since you don't have as much time to rise back up in the rankings. Rivalry Week is the last week of the season.

They mentioned South Carolina-Clemson. Our rivalry started non-sports related and is mostly due to the disconnect from the capital city of our state (where the University of South Carolina is located) and the upper part of the state (where Clemson University is located). Clemson was founded to spite South Carolina. Alumni of each school have been elected to the state legislature and at points tried to shut down the other school. Clemson's agriculture school was originally at South Carolina. One year when South Carolina won the students had a poster of their mascot (a Gamecock) standing on Clemson's mascot (a Tiger). Clemson was a military school at the time so a group of Clemson cadets confronted South Carolina students. The Clemson cadets had loaded weapons with bayonets. The rivalry game stopped for it. Yeah, we had a big fight in the early 2000s that blew up and was all over American sports news so it was mentioned a lot for years onward.

If you want to see a fight break out, watch professional hockey. (There's an old Rodney Dangerfield joke: "I went to a fight last night and a hockey game broke out.") In football, it's pretty rare, maybe one or two a year. NHL hockey, it's every few games. College hockey, full-on fights are pretty rare because they're penalized more heavily - it's an automatic major + game misconduct + suspension for at least 1 game - so it usually ends up being just ordinary pushing and shoving. But in the NHL, it's just a major penalty - 5 minutes in the box - and then you're back out on the ice, assuming you didn't do something else worthy of a bigger penalty.
7:00: Because it's Michigan. Bunch of arrogant twerps who were, to borrow a famous insult from old coach Barry Switzer, born on third base and think they hit a triple. They were used to thinking of my school (Michigan State) as nothing, but at the time of that incident they had lost eight of the last ten to MSU. (And it wasn't the first incident during that time, either. Their rivalry with Ohio State may more often have a championship on the line, but they take losing to MSU a *lot* worse than they take losing to OSU.)
9:08: That's BYU (Brigham Young University, a Mormon school in Utah) and Memphis.
12:57: I'm not totally sure, but I believe that was the incident where Marcus Hall (an Ohio State player) was ejected from the game during the fight and flipped off the crowd as he left the stadium.
15:49: Ask fans from different parts of the country which rivalry is biggest and you'll get different answers, but the two that almost everyone will agree are at least near the top are Alabama-Auburn and Michigan-Ohio State. Army-Navy is also a huge rivalry, although there are rarely stakes as high as the others. Some other big ones:
    - Minnesota-Wisconsin has the distinction of having been played the most times (131). Hasn't been especially competitive of late: Minnesota dominated the early years, but Wisconsin has won 23 of the last 27, including a streak of 14 in a row from 2004 to 2017. This past Saturday, though, Minnesota beat Wisconsin (which knocked them out of the running for the conference title).
    - Michigan-Michigan State tends to be a nastier rivalry than Michigan-Ohio State, as I mentioned above, but it often doesn't have stakes as high as Michigan-OSU. Lots of other in-state rivalries like this (USC-UCLA and North Carolina-Duke are particularly notable for the close proximity of the two campuses, though there are plenty of others with two major schools in the state).
    - Oklahoma-Texas is probably the biggest in its region (Oklahoma-Nebraska and Texas-Texas A&M also used to be huge, before Nebraska moved to the Big Ten and Texas A&M to the SEC). This is one of a small number (Florida-Georgia and Army-Navy are the two others that immediately come to mind) that is always played at a neutral site rather than alternating between the two home stadiums each year - specifically, the Cotton Bowl stadium at the Texas State Fair in Dallas (which, despite being in Texas, is actually a few miles closer to the Oklahoma campus than to the Texas campus).
    - In recent years, Alabama-LSU has often had huge stakes, although it doesn't have the deep history of animosity that Alabama-Auburn does.
    - Many games have traveling trophies awarded to the winner (Minnesota and Wisconsin play for Paul Bunyan's Axe, for example). Depending on how you define it, the oldest such trophy belongs to either Arizona-Arizona State (the Territorial Cup awarded for the game in 1899, then lost for 80 years; the practice of passing it to the winner of each game for the next year didn't begin until 2001) or Minnesota-Michigan (the Little Brown Jug, first awarded in 1909 and passed to the winner after each game since; however, with the teams now in opposite divisions of the Big Ten, the game isn't played every year). Trophy games are more common in the north, for some reason (possibly due to the northern schools taking up the game earlier?). A lot of the older trophies have some interesting stories behind them - the Little Brown Jug was a water jug Michigan brought in 1903 out of concern that some crazy Minnesota fans might mess with their team's water supply; it was left behind after the game (a tie) and Minnesota treated it as a trophy (Michigan was a major powerhouse in that era, so achieving a tie was rather impressive). The next time they played, Minnesota proposed that the winner take it until the next game, and so it came to be. Minnesota-Iowa has another interesting story: Floyd of Rosedale is a 45 kg bronze statue of a pig, to commemorate a bet (of a live hog) between the governors of the two states on the 1935 game, made to calm tensions after Minnesota had been rather brutal toward Iowa's star running back - one of the few black players at the time - in the 1934 game and Iowa had threatened retaliation. It seemed to have worked, as the 1935 game went without incident, and the trophy was commissioned before the next year's game.

Today was my states rival game, which we call the Iron Bowl. Between the University of Alabama and the University of Auburn. At the end of the regulation 4 quarters that we play in our games, we were tied 17-17. We ended up going into 4 over times till we got a winner. The University of Alabama finally won. And now we get to go on to the next game, which is a championship game. With that said, some of the action that you seen of the fighting on the field and sidelines also happened during our game today.

Kabir, you have to understand Football is, War played on a field.
To get to high levels of playing, you have to be a bit psychotic, and overly aggressive, which leads to things like this. Which honestly aren't even that bad. You see worst fights in practice during the summer or during HELL WEEKS.

College football in my opinion is the most emotional sport out there. These athletes are 18-22 years old, you've got teenage mentalities in grown men's bodies. Plus you don't just represent your team, you represent your school and your state! There's a lot of pride and school spirit involved. And some of these players have known each other since they were little kids, and have developed some love-hate relationships.

One of the things about rivalries in US sports is the same, I believe, as in the UK - location. Whenever there's a state that has more than one team, or university, in it - or, when there's a team in the next state over, there's gonna be friction. Florida University vs Florida State, Florida International vs Miami, Texas vs Texas Tech, etc. Duke is in North Carolina, & they tend to mix things up with the University of North Carolina. Kansas vs Kansas State, the list goes on & on. In this clip we also a row between Colorado & Utah, which're next door to each other.

I like how many of these are in completely meaningless games. Some are rivalries, but even many of those were games that didn’t mean a ton to the season.
Most of the best rivalries in college football are inter-state or regional. I grew up in Georgia, so of course I’m an UGA fan. As you can see below, these are all well over 100 years old at this point. Just these teams below have 39 national championships(about 30% of all time) between them which makes these very big rival games every year. Every major college football team has at least 3-4 big rivals.
UGA vs Ga Tech since 1893: “Clean Old Fashioned Hate”
    UGA vs Alabama since 1895
UGA vs Auburn since 1892: “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry”
    UGA vs Clemson since 1897
UGA vs Florida since 1904: “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”
    UGA vs SC since 1894
    UGA vs TN since 1899

The funny part is most of the rivalries are teams from the same state or neighboring states, like UT and Baylor or Baylor and TCU, or Louisville and UK, or OU and UT or LSU and UT it's bad blood and even better on the brotherhood part of it is that some of these guys don't come from that state at all but they'll ride for their team til the end. I can't speak on distance for all of them but Baylor has a 2 hour distance between both UT and TCU, it ain't just the teams who fight.
