The Notre Dame/Michigan rivalry is one of the oldest in college football. People don’t talk about it so much anymore, but it goes back to when Michigan first learned the game. Notre Dame asked Michigan to teach them how to play, which they did. They played each other every year, but when Notre Dame started winning, Michigan stopped playing them. They even refused to let ND join their football conference. ND had to start traveling by train to play at all. It’s part of the reason why ND is still not in any conference. There are other reasons, but this was the start of it.

For the Stanford vs Cal game, the band came out on the field because they though the runner was down and the game was over. At 6:04 of the video, you can see one of the Stanford players at the top right jump up and celebrate. So even some of the players on the field thought the game was over. The band rushed the field and Cal trampled a few tuba players giving college football one of the most iconic moments in history.

College football is the closest thing to the ‘tribalism’ that you see in European football. As you’re aware, in American sports the pro teams sometimes move to different cities. But the college you attend is always in the same spot. And a lot of families will have multiple generations attend the same college, so you grow up being a fan and then graduate from there yourself.
A lot of the rivalries are geographical, whether it’s instate or bordering states. You live and work with fans of opposing colleges.

Just something about the energy surrounding it feels different than even the national championship or even the Super Bowl to me. 5:24 - That was fourth down, so if Michigan just took a knee, the clock would immediately stop for the change of possession, giving MSU the ball with enough time to either try to pick up 25 yards on one quick play and then kick a field goal, or to throw a Hail Mary to the end zone. What they were trying *should* have worked - all they had to do was not fumble the snap, get the punt away, and even if the clock didn't run out before the ball became dead, MSU would have had to go 80+ yards in one play.
That said, once the snap was fumbled, the best thing the punter could do for Michigan's chances was just fall on it. He clearly wasn't going to get the kick away, they were still far enough that MSU would need to advance the ball a bit to attempt a field goal, and they would have a chance to set their defense instead of a loose-ball situation with ten men behind the ball. But he panicked, and the rest is history.
6:23 - only the most famous ending in all of college football (at least until 2013 and the play that immediately followed it in the video). The Stanford marching band was ready to come onto the field for their postgame show, they saw the tackle at midfield, and they didn't realize the player had lateraled the ball first and the play was still live. (Fun story on this one - there is an almost-never-used rule that allows the officials to award a touchdown for a "palpably unfair act" or outside interference. During the officials' discussion after the play, the referee was considering whether he needed to invoke that rule due to the band or simply penalize Stanford for extra players entering the field with the ball still live - which would allow Cal a field goal attempt to win - when the line judge told him that the Cal player scored anyway.)

You're correct in that the Michigan punter should have just fallen on the ball vs. trying to make a play. Michigan State would have had time for 1, maybe 2 plays, but they were likely out of field goal range and would have needed to gain yards and stop the clock to try one. A pass to the end zone from that distance (about the 40) is low percentage as well.

You should definitely come to a University of Tennessee game. Tail gate from 9am - game time, Tennessee vs either bama or Georgia or Florida or even Bols vs Kentucky or Vs whoever. Cant go wrong with Neyland stadium in the fall. We start drinking and cooking bar bq around 10am and then goto the game at 3-8pm depending on the game. Then 6 hours of partying after the game. GO VOLS! GBO 🍊

The best rivalries are those that have been around forever in which a win can save the head coach’s job for another year even if the team looses the rest of the games that year. That depends on each team individually. For OSU (OK), it’s OU they must win. For OU, it’s UT they must win. For UT, they must win OU. For TA&M, it’s UT they must win. Of the examples I listed above, where the rivalry game is against the same teams, OU vs UT. Neither team is located in Dallas, and this game sells out the Cotton Bowl Stadium every year no matter this season’s team records are before the game. The entire City of Dallas is aware of the game hosted on the second weekend of the Texas State Fair. The hotels are sold out that weekend months in advance.
Other rivalries of interest that have head coach job saving impacts are OSU(OH) vs MI, UA vs AU, USC vs UCLA, Army vs Navy. The team with the largest fan base is Norte Dame, and it’s rivalry game varies from year to year depending upon the Big 10 conference winner the previous year. It used to be independent of conference, so the big rivalry those years were with the highest ranked teams the year earlier.
Fans of most teams sort of follow Notre Dame example of not caring so much for history than who had the best record the year before. These so called rivalries do not have the get out of jail card for the head coach with a win with a loosing season.
There is a difference between big games for that season championship, upsets that occur, and a true rivalry game.
True rivalry games most often use to play in neutral stadiums, some still do. Those that still do are events all to themselves, where after every play half the fans are cheering and half the fans sit silent, but prior to the play all the fans were cheering. They are the best rivalry games to attend if you get the chance to do so.

When they play the Air Force Academy they still say “Beat Army”. Coaches in every sport are fired solely on their performance in the Army-Navy matchups. It’s called “America’s Game” for a reason. - Georgia and Alabama
    - Ohio State and Michigan
They are easily 1 and 1A right now.

    - Oklahoma vs Texas
    - Alabama vs LSU
    - Alabama vs Auburn
    - USC vs UCLA

Georgia seems to have more rivals than a lot of other schools and a big part of which rivalry you care about most depends on geography within the state and age. Georgia Tech is our traditional rival but it hasn't exactly been the most competitive of late so younger fans tend to put it lower on the list. For those in South Georgia it's often Florida, in Augusta it can sometimes be South Carolina, Western Georgia it's Auburn, North Georgia it's Tennessee or Clemson.... Georgia tends to be within the top 2-3 rivals of a lot of schools around them.

As a lifetime Vanderbilt University fan I have to say I'm not surprised you've never heard of them. Vanderbilt is a founding member of the SEC and the only private university in the conference. That basically means that they have a smaller undergraduate population, a slightly more strenuous set of requirements to be admitted and not as big of a fan base as the other schools. The football team is not known for consistently winning We go through long periods of bad seasons and then we'll have a new coach come in and they might be good for a couple of years and we'll get better and the coach moves to a bigger school.
Vanderbilt's baseball team is usually in the top 5 of the conference and often nationally ranked. They hda few National championships titles. They also do quite well in other sports that don't draw very large attendance such as tennis, golf, swimming..
The basketball teams are rebuilding they're usually competitive.
Vanderbilt fans think of Tennessee as the big rival because we sre the two SEC teams in the same state. However I don't think Tennessee thinks of us as a rival they think of Alabama as their number one rival. But they do hate it if they happen to lose a game to Vanderbilt in any sport so we'll take that.
Vanderbilt campus is near downtown Nashville. The Uni is known for their law and their medical schools Nashville was blessed to have three major medical centers in Vanderbilt is one of them. They have one of the best children's hospitals in the world.
Sometimes it's tough being a Vanderbilt fan but I love watching the SEC compete against other conferences so that makes it worthwhile.

I'm not sure what the biggest rivalry is but I'm sure it involves civil lawsuits any time they play. But I just know the rivalries my school, the University of Utah, has. Locally it's still BYU, within the PAC12, I'd have to say University of Oregon. Dunno why, but it seems when ever we play them things are cranked up a notch on intensity. Nothing against U of Oregon, and you might not think the U of U is your rival, but that's how I'm seeing things.
