HAMMER TIME at Old Classic Car - plus "WILL IT PASS?" Mazda MX5 MOT attempt

  • Hammers & crow-bars begin today's Old Classic Car garage video as work starts on pulling down the terminally-rotten car shelter here at OCC HQ. Various tinkerings in the garage then follow, with discussions centreing around wiper blade arrangements on classic cars while I source replacement wipers and arms for the 1956 Standard 8.
    Also in this episode, the 1995 Mazda MX-5 - also with new wipers - heads off for an MOT attempt - will it pass? A few recent automobilia finds also occupy me for several minutes in this catch-up classic cars video.

    Spark plugs and wiper blades , the things of young boys dreams. Great video, shed expansion plans need to be drawn up for our approval.

    I found the spark plug section very interesting. I have one fat plug in my toolbox . My friend Greg handed it to me when I was replacing plugs and laughed at me when I tried to figure out why it didn't look right. I keep it around, because it makes me smile and think of him. He died young in a racing crash, but when I tell the story, I feel I give him a bit of immortality. :-)

    Left loosey , right tighty. That is how I remember spanner work. But beware of Calor Gas cylinder left hand thread of course. Those wiper blades/arms are so small and fragile-looking compare to ,say, my 2017 Focus estate. However, you could replace just the rubbers in the old days as I recall from the 1960s. I remember the fat plugs on my 1934 Riley 12HP Falcon. Were they 18mm? I have the plug spanner still but ,sadly, not the car as I was 22 and did not have enough money to keep it on the road due to repairs. I bought it for £60. Love these detail looked at what many would call junk. I keep stuff like that.

    Harley has a little museum in his shed. That Splendor box is splendid. The artwork of the old car on it is fantastic. It reminds me of the Dinky toy car boxes.

    Hi Rick, excellent video showing a lot of the everyday joys of old car maintenance. These are really interesting, and although it may , to some seem mundane, it is what keeps us interested in these older cars. I like your enthusiasm for the 'made in England' products, best to you both from Sydney, Australia.

    " Cheeky little whelk" I haven't heard that expression for centuries. Both my cars have their MOT's next month 7 and 8th the same days I am going to have a cardio stent fitted . The SLK has done around 1,000 miles since its last MOT which cost me £200 for new chassis mounts which wasn't bad. Interesting video RJ. You could set up your own memorabilia museum.

    I think it was better to take down that lean-to before it fell down and gave you a headache! I don't know what your plans are but I would put up something much more robust that will last longer than twenty years. I found it interesting looking through all those wiper blades and arms. It is something we tend to take for granted until they fall off (or fly off). Glad the MX 5 passed it's MOT for another year with no major problems. As for spark plugs again we in the classic car world take them for granted until they fail. Thank Rick for this assorted video. 👍👍

    Hi 😊 That was a worry, when I saw your image of about your video come up I thought oh no. You are standing by your Standard 8 and the word demolition is above. I though you were going to say I am going to enter the Standard in a demolition derby. Thank goodness that's not so.

    does using a 'straight' wiper arm on the passenger side not interfere with the scuttle vent?

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Před 2 měsíci +2

      It seems ok, and I hardly ever use that vent anyway so it'll all be fine for now at least

    Old stuff is often so very hard to get rid of. It's a frame of mind that I'm keen to foster these days, seeing as I now fit squarely in that category myself. I heard, or read somewhere, a comment to the effect that my body is a temple; it creaks, even on a good day; every joint has an issue; it's crumbling and, every now and then, something falls off!
    I digress. I keep all kinds and sizes of odds and sods because...... I dunno; answers on a postcard.
    My wife says to me 'Why do you keep that old thing around?' and I just smile and say 'I wonder......' 😉

  • @tomday7309
    @tomday7309 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I don't know if I should feel proud or scared as I thought putting the wiper arms in a vise and bending them to suit came just before you actually did it! Oh dear! By the way, I've never seen that gripping hex nut collar setup on the end of the arm that you have. All my old cars had the pressed on spline design with a lock tab that would snap over the splined hub in the car to hold it from vibrating off. Those wiper blades you took off look very similar to my 1940 Chevrolet ones. They are nearly useless as the blades may only last down the driveway.

    Wy pack? Made in England? Where is it made now? The car on rhe splendor box is a 39 or 40 buick in my opinion.. im lining up a 53 ford consul sale here in the states.... is there any upgrades. for the consul???

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I don't know of any obvious upgrades for a four-cylinder Consul, and if you pep up the engine then you have to start altering axle ratios, beefing up brakes etc etc
