- www.homebuildingandrepairs.co... Visit our website today to learn more about roof framing, home repairs and remodeling. This if part one and will provide you with what I believe is the best video on laying out hip or valley rafters ever made with step off method. Part two will provide you with feet and inch measurements, but in this video you will learn what most carpenters don't understand while using the step off framing square method for roof framing.

Love you videos best guy online. Do a rake wall with a mono pitch roof
Thanks and if you email me a picture or drawing I will consider making a video.
very clever. never heard of this one before. thank you.
Glad you like it!
Thank you so much for this, im trying to integrate an extension with a hip roof, into an existing hip roof.
You're welcome.
Excellent teaching and thank you.
Awesome and keep learning.
Cool video man..been looking for a few for my helper he been trying to do some learning on his own..
Glad I could help
Isnt the gap on the overhang for the sheathing?
YES SIRRR...GOOD ONE
AWESOME!!!
What if I want to make a 3’ overhang. The Jack rafters will be nailed to the hip rafter but it won’t be supported by the framing plate. Won’t that make the roof weak?
You would need to mark 5/17 3 times. the video he marks 5/17 6 times when it only takes 4 times to go from the wall plate to the ridge so his overhang is 2 feet.I always lay my tail out and make the height above the plate (how much board that is left measuring plumb out of the seat cut) the same as my other rafters then measure from plate to ridge instead of laying it out with the square
Cheers
Can you not just use the step off method using 16.97 instead to avoid the gap ? If you reduce the seat cut on the hip by half the thickness does this give you the hip drop cut ? thanks for the great tips mate !
Yes, but it will be difficult to do since it's about 1/32 of an inch.
What if it’s 8’4” span? How do you mark the 4’2” on the square when stepping off?
Try this method. czcams.com/video/aBjBnHIFYWM/video.html
Forgive me for asking a silly question. I was looking through your videos and could not find anything on a tandem garage. Have you ever made a video on one of those?
I do have some garage building videos at our website. www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/garages/index.html
If you use the first method shown, (my favorite) you will have to drop the hip rafter.
Yes, done that before, but would use the method in this video in the future.
