I live in the suburbs of Dallas. It's very common to have total privacy fences, aka board-on-board. In some neighborhoods, MOST of the fences are also 8-ft tall. Thanks for showing how the total privacy style is not really that much more expensive! That was helpful. I am about to put a fence in and was considering the partial-privacy style to save money, but now I will go ahead and spend the relatively few extra bucks and make it more private. I would have regretted spending all that money and still having gaps in the fence, so I will definitely do the total privacy style now.

your measurement vs. calculation problem comes in with rounding. The diagonal of a 12"x12" square rounds to 17" but is really 16.97" or 16 31/32". so when you multiply 16/97"x10 and 17"x10 you come up with the 1/4" difference. You always have to remember that if all of your rounding is in the same direction the answer will be too much. It's best just to not round.

Would you be able to add a dormer like this with a compression style roof/ridge board? I've given it a little thought and couldn't figure out weather the outside dormer wall would properly distribute the roof load. I'm basing this off a 32'x20' cabin with a 12 12 pitch roof.

On my new build the plywood length did not make it to the bottom so they cut another piece of plywood and there is a gap that allows air flow into the home. I noticed today they applied cellulose insulation and did not seal gap. Is that okay?

I always thought of A-frame homes as Tahoe homes because it was the popular design in Lake Tahoe back in the late 60's and early 70's when I was a kid. Always was attracted to them, but they must be rather impractical since the walls are unusable for cabinets, shelves, or hanging stuff; which explains it being primarily selected as a sky cabin rather than a permanent residence.

They're now not allowing single cut stair stringers to span more than 6 ft horizontally with out a support these days

Do people lay their horizontal 2x4's flat as in the video as opposed to having the 4" vertical?

I’ve always measured from the top plate to Bottom of the ridge for the one third measurement. I just figured it that way because you can’t put a collar tie any higher than the bottom of the ridge. But I do see now that there would be a crucial difference in height if you were trying to place the collar tie in the lowest legal position. But nevertheless, I always try to place to collar ties so they are touching the ridge.

If the angles are the same when you flip them 90°, or rather the triangles are the same just rotated, then it has to be a 30°/60° triangle. And I was taught that although a very popular and easy "gambrel" style, it is not a true gambrel. Still love your channel and vids. Thank you for your works.

I am sure it is the same as in the video, If i use the kitchen sink for a bit, the tub will start to fill, it drains but its very slow (30+mins), I've dumped clog remover down bathroom tub drain, that didn't work. Would it be advisable to do another drain cleaner, but from the the kitchen sink. If, yes, would I want to do this after letting the water fill up the tub a bit or with a dry pipe? (calling a plumber or snaking it myself, is next option). please help. Thank you

How does this house hold up to extreme weather? It's made of wood so I'm guessing not so well. History has proven wooden houses are awful. Get a grip and build a real house.

Imma just put some pavers down and lay my first beams down on them. Got the wood for free so easy come easy go if the termites get it.

I like the idea, and was toying with it myself recently. There is an issue with the approach of inserting the long rebar, and that is if you intend to use rebar rod into a hole that is drilled to the same OD (which is the ideal way in order to minimize movement, and can even avert the need for epoxy), then you will never be able to knock it in as required. Also, precisely and accurately manipulating rebar at those lengths is not an easy thing to do and I think you might get an inconsistent outcome. Lastly, if you stray off-perpendicular even a fraction when you drill your holes, then your rebar grid is going to be just a bit too funky. But, the thinking is definitely worthwhile imho.

So how do you get the joist back to the ledger??

What if everything is draining fine, but when the washing machine/ dishwasher/ toilet is flushed it’s making the bathtub and bathroom sink make a gurgling noise?

Instead of trying to make an otherwise rectangular deck frame circular, why not break up the circle into multiple sections like pie slices? Trillium Domes has a good video on this on their youtube channel.

Like you mentioned in the beginning of the video, is it possible to install a roof without the seat cuts? I don't have the tools available to make those cuts and I am building a small shed for a local highschool. One wall is 8 feet tall and the other wall is 7 feet tall.

I have seen a supposed expert carpenter build one with an add on. Add on was living room roof was lower than a frame so all the heat went right up to upstairs bedroom. Living room always cold had to put monitor heater in living room for heat eventhough he had wood stove in kitchen. If you do an add on make roof same hight.

would running a 12/3 wire over a door header to upgrade to/add a 3way switches be okay? have a truss attic with like 4 ft blown in insulation so be easier to go over the door and redo the drywall. some reason this house the light switch is 12 ft from the door. very frustration to find in the dark.
